Game licences to kill or take game are not required in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. However, in Scotland, a venison dealer’s licence is still required for those wishing to deal in venison although deer stalkers can sell their venison direct to a venison dealer without the need for a licence. On the Isle of Man a game licence is required in order to shoot game and is available from the Treasury Office. Game is defined as pheasant, partridge, grouse or moor game and hare (brown or common). A game dealer’s licence is also required for those wishing to deal in game. There is no requirement for a game licence on Guernsey but you must hold an appropriate firearm or shotgun certificate. In Jersey there are no game seasons and therefore a game licence is not required.Post: 29 April 15:24

Today, I had a very special encounter at sunrise: I managed to spot and photograph a cross fox. They are a melanistic color variation of the red fox. It’s a very, very rare sight. A few years ago, a study in Scandinavia examined 3,000 red foxes, and only 0.3% of them had this melanistic variation. In recent years, I’ve seen a few of them around Abisko. Another shot of the fox I photographed yesterday while driving on Farmer's Loop here in Fairbanks. If you look closely, you can see it's frosty breath around it's muzzle. It's in the exact same spot as the other shot with the exception of the head position. I thought it was a crossfox, but I've had one person say may be a silverfox, and another friend say a melanistic red fox, which is a broad term to mean a red fox with a non standard coloration. I've seen a few non-standard foxes in the East Fairbanks area that I suspect are related, this one included. All within about a six mile radius of each other. This is an area large enough that they are not the same individual, but may be family members.Post: 17 October 17:47

An Inuit hunter stands over a dead polar bear. November 26, 1924, USA The Inuit are an ethnic group of indigenous peoples of North America living in the vast northern territories of Canada from the Labrador Peninsula to the mouth of the Mackenzie River, as well as in Alaska. One of the main activities of the Inuit is hunting wild animals. Inuit have made a living from hunting on land, on the sea, on the ice. Through time, marine mammals, terrestrial mammals, fish and birds have been the basis of food and clothing, light and heat, tools and means of transportation, such as dog sleds, kayaks and large skin boats. That way all Inuit live was evolved with the hunting culture. The sustenance of families and settlements has relied heavily on favourable hunting conditions and successful catches. Hunting has therefore traditionally been a key focal point in the organisation of Arctic communities, where roles and responsibilities have been defined by hunting activities. Private property owners sue over Virginia’s hunting dog law WILSONS, Va. — Soon after Jim Medeiros bought his 143-acre (58-hectare) cattle and poultry farm in rural Virginia a decade ago, he and his wife were startled by the sounds of 20 hunting dogs barking and howling as they circled their house and chased their chickens When Medeiros confronted a hunter nearby, the man told him he had permission to hunt on Medeiros’ property. In disbelief, Medeiros called the agency that enforces a state law allowing hunters to retrieve their hunting dogs from private property, even when the property owners object. “He told me, you can’t prohibit people from coming onto your land,” recalled Medeiros. He then pointed out that his land was posted with no trespassing signs. “I said, ‘You don’t understand. My land is posted,'” Medeiros said. Macrozamia bush flavour for Australian aborigine hunters. Macrozamia are palm-shaped, dioecious plants with a usually unbranched trunk with several or many leaves. The leaves of the macrozamia are pinnate, pubescent, at least when young. Young macrozamia plants can differ significantly from adults in leaf details. The seeds of the macrozamia are almost spherical to oblong or elliptical in shape, with a red or, less often, yellow, orange or brown fleshy outer sarcotesta. Most parts of the macrozamia are toxic. Various species are the cause of livestock poisoning. The seeds of the macrozamia are poisonous, but the aborigines know how to handle them to remove the poison, and thus take advantage of the large amount of food provided by a single plant. Macrozamia seed cones form after some fire. Male and female seed cones form on separate plants, and large female seeds mature when they turn red or yellow. Renard roux - Red Fox Vulpes vulpes - Gaspésie (Québec, Canada) Pour le renard roux, se nourrir l'hiver au Québec n'est pas toujours chose facile. How the return of poaching threatens India’s tiger success story 50 Years of Project Tiger: India’s wildlife authorities insist poaching is not happening at an ‘alarming’ rate, but campaigners and local rangers say grim incidents of dead tigers being found without claws, whiskers and teeth are part of a bigger and growing problem. Arpan Rai reports from Madhya Pradesh, India The poachers who killed T32 in India’s Madhya Pradesh had a simple plan, and executed it at night. Running wire through a field and applying a strong current, they electrocuted the tigress as she patrolled her territory, beating her to death after she lost consciousness. They then pulled out her canines, whiskers and claws before dumping the body in a village well, weighted down by a stone. T32 was declared missing by rangers, until three days later the stone gave way and her remains floated up to the surface of the well. The bobcat (Lynx rufus), also known as the red lynx, is a medium-sized cat native to North America. It ranges from southern Canada through most of the contiguous United States to Oaxaca in Mexico. It is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List since 2002, due to its wide distribution and large population. Although it has been hunted extensively both for sport and fur, populations have proven stable, though declining in some areas. It has distinctive black bars on its forelegs and a black-tipped, stubby (or "bobbed") tail, from which it derives its name. It reaches a total length (including the tail) of up to 125 cm (50 in). It is an adaptable predator inhabiting wooded areas, semidesert, urban edge, forest edge, and swampland environments. It remains in some of its original range, but populations are vulnerable to extirpation by coyotes and domestic animals. Though the bobcat prefers rabbits and hares, it hunts insects, chickens, geese and other birds, small rodents, and deer. PrePost: 30 June 00:09
