New York Hunter Gets a Second Chance on This 180-Inch Buck “I was shaking so bad I missed him clean, sending my arrow three feet over his back” eremy Williams likes to hunt his family’s 500-acre parcel near the Susquehanna River in south-central New York. He goes down to the river often, and last summer he spotted a giant buck near the bank while catfishing. Williams watched where the deer bedded, and then came back to place trail cams in the area. By October, he’d learned the buck’s habits well enough to make his move. “He was only 20 yards away from me on Oct. 10,” Williams tells Outdoor Life. “But I was shaking so bad I missed him clean, sending my arrow three feet over his back.” Eager to redeem himself this season, Williams kept an eye on his trail cams and he kept getting photos of the buck. A few other hunters in the area had spotted the buck, too. But he wasn’t an easy deer to pattern. “I’d been bowhunting him on [our] family’s land in low, thick areas because I believed th

In Horn of the Hunter, Robert Ruark describes two Cape buffalo he took on his first safari, in 1951, in (then) Tanganyika with Harry Selby. The first was wounded and gave the pair a hell of a time until he finally succumbed. The second, which had much bigger and more massive horns, was also wounded, and disappeared into a dense thicket. Selby and Ruark looked at each other, then sat down to smoke a cigarette. As the minutes wore on, Ruark became more and more anxious about what was to come. Then Selby invited him to accompany him as he went after the buffalo — a serious compliment as you know if you’ve ever been in that situation. Ruark steeled himself, checked his .470, and off they went. The tracking took some time. It probably seemed much longer than it was, but that’s the way these things work, as they crept along, expecting a charge at any second.

Review of the Pard NV 008 S Day-Night Digital Rifle Scope I recently had the opportunity to try out the Pard NV 008 S digital rifle scope, and I must say, it has left quite an impression on me. In this review, I’ll cover both the positives and the few drawbacks I've encountered while using this versatile scope. Pros: Day and Night Functionality: One of the standout features of the Pard NV 008 S is its ability to function effectively both during the day and at night. Veber Wolf2 5-30x56 Day Scope Review I recently had the opportunity to test out the Veber Wolf2 5-30x56 day scope, and I am excited to share my thoughts on this product. As an avid shooter and hunter, I've used a variety of optics over the years, and I always appreciate the chance to assess new equipment. Review of the Pard SA 62-45 LRF Thermal Scope I recently had the opportunity to test the Pard SA 62-45 LRF thermal scope, and I wanted to share my honest impressions based on my experience. First off, the image quality is quite impressive for a thermal scope in this price range. The resolution is clear, and the ability to distinguish between various heat signatures is a notable feature. Whether in complete darkness or during dusk conditions, this scope performs admirably, allowing for effective target acquisition. The built-in LRF (Laser Range Finder) has been a game-changer for my shooting accuracy. It provides quick and reliable distance readings, which is crucial for long-range shots. The range-finding functionality works well, although I found that it can sometimes struggle with reflective surfaces, such as metal objects. One of my favorite aspects of the Pard SA 62-45 is its user-friendly interface. The controls are intuitive, and I quickly figured out how to navigate the diff

Deforestation in Borneo threatens three endangered, endemic plant species The rampant deforestation for monoculture plantation and logging in western Indonesian Borneo has exacerbated the extinction risks of three plant species endemic to the island’s riparian lowland rainforests, a new study said. The researchers are calling for stricter protection of the forest fragments as a key conservation strategy for the three plant species and for further research to be done to better understand the species’ population status so as to improve their management. The island of Borneo, which is split between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, has for the last few decades lost more than a third of its forests due to fires, logging, mining and industrial plantations, particularly oil palms. New rule gives Colorado authority over gray wolf management With Colorado’s gray wolf reintroduction deadline looming, the state just received some good news regarding gray wolf management. This week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) finalized a rule, 10j, that will allow the state to create its own rules for what’s considered a “nonessential experimental population,” according to Channel 9 News. This is a big step for the reintroduction effort in a measure that was approved by voters back in 2020, which requires Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) to reintroduce wolves to the state by Dec. 31, 2023. CPW announced on Twitter/X that “10j gives us gray wolf management flexibility,” which includes determining when it will be permissible to kill a problem wolf. 10j was supported by local ranchers who, per the state’s management plan, will be allowed to kill wolves if they catch one “actively trying to kill livestock,” according to Channel 9 News. Without this rule in place, the
