But does that qualify them to be classified as dangerous game. I have certainly had my doubts until, that is, an experience I had one night in a farmer’s field. There is no question that an animal that weighs two tons, can run up to 20 mph and has huge teeth, has the potential of being dangerous. The danger is highest if you happen to catch a hippo on the land. Water is their preferred environment and they seem less threatened there. I don’t think any predator will attack a full-grown hippo in the water, although a big croc will certainly snatch a small hippo given half a chance. On the other hand, lion, especially a large pride, will attack a hippo if they catch it on land. This may have something to do with hippo temperament when they are away from water. In the 1970s, it was normal for groups of young Europeans to go across the Sahara in old Land Rovers, on adventures that bordered on the reckless. A group of Spanish filmmakers did almost the same, reflecting one of these adventures while they themselves lived one, they left in 10 vehicles, three of which returned, and for three months they lived in tents and cars while they filmed. The film was somewhat successful, and was even the first Spanish film to be shown in China. But for whatever reason it fell into oblivion, no one digitized it, and like other things it faded into history. But its director recovered 25,000 meters of film, re-edited it and is now promoting it again. Some people hunt their whole lives and never get to see a bear, and one morning on my PA hunt this big boy stepped out. I was frozen solid and getting discouraged until that happened. Although he came out one day before I was able to use my bear tag, I was brought so much joy just to get that experience at 50 yards. Never know what you’re gonna get in life, that’s why you should always keep pushing forward. Montana judge to issue decision on wolf hunting and trapping Montana hunters and trappers await a decision that should come sometime this week as a temporary restraining order that immediately changed the state’s wolf season expires today. District Court Judge Chris Abbot issued the restraining order earlier this month that applied to Lewis and Clark counties. The order suspended the state’s regulations, which allowed for expanded wolf hunting and trapping. On Monday, Abbott heard testimony regarding the issue. There's magic in the air. The first frosts of the year greet us each morning, and the tops of the highest peaks are dusted with snow. The colours are changing, and the Yukon's landscape is something to behold. It's moose hunting season, and I'm excited. What you'll see in these images is how tall the buckbrush in the valley is. You will have a few challenges if you want to stand in here and hunt moose. If you're lucky, the brush will make it impossible to see any bulls or cows further than a few hundred yards. Taking a shot? It's almost impossible unless the bull comes in hot to your call. I much prefer getting up on the hillsides around the valley where I can call effectively and glass massive areas. You can see one image of my father with the bull he shot. Ruger Mini-14 The Mini-14 has been around since 1973 and was developed with the help of James Sullivan of AR-15 fame. The Mini-14 is a scaled-down version of the M-1 Garand action and feeds from a detachable box magazine. These rifles are lightweight at just over six pounds, compact, handy and reliable. More recent examples are more accurate than their predecessors and offer additional features such as scope mounts. Barbuda is a wildlife paradise Barbuda’s small population, with large areas of undeveloped land and a once pristine coastline interspersed with natural salt-ponds make it the perfect habitat for hundreds of species of sea birds and animals, many of them now lost or endangered elsewhere in the Caribbean. After a shower of rain you might see a land turtle looking for a drink, and after a big seasonal rain there will be land crabs marching by the hundreds. Any large development disturbs this incredible natural environment and Barbudans have always sought to keep it this way. The island has long been home to nesting sea turtles whose tracks can be seen in the sand on nearly every beach of our coastline, and a short drive into the bush in Barbuda is a wonderful opportunity to see many different animals living – often in harsh drought conditions – in their own space, mostly undisturbed. One of my favorite (and there are many) parts of our trips to South Africa is going to different places, hunting incredible animals, meeting and spending time with new friends, and seeing really cool things. Last year was no exception when we went for a very memorable hunt for a Blue Springbok, culling some Blesbok, getting to hold the oldest gun I’ve ever seen in this toradar from the 17th or 18th century, drinking some fantastic brandy with our host, and doing it all with my beautiful wife Ale’ on our honeymoon.
