Canadian geese hunting is a popular and challenging pursuit for hunters across the United States. These migratory birds are known for their intelligence, adaptability, and strong social bonds, making them both a rewarding and demanding target. Here's an exploration of why accurate shooting is crucial in this type of hunting, how American hunters approach it, and what makes it so difficult. The Difficulty of Canadian Goose Hunting Despite its popularity, Canadian goose hunting is not easy. Several factors contribute to its difficulty: Intelligence and Adaptability Geese are highly observant and wary of potential threats. If they detect anything unusual—such as poorly placed decoys, inconsistent calling, or exposed hunters—they will flare away from the area. Experienced geese become even more difficult to deceive over time. Weather Conditions Weather plays a significant role in goose hunting success. Wind direction affects how geese approach decoys, while fog, rain, or snow can obscure

The Different Types of Hunting in Italy There are different types of hunting in Italy. There are specific times of the year that one can go hunt. Here are some of them: Wild boar hunting in Italy Compared to other types of hunting, boar hunting is the most traditional. The reason is that hunters are allowed to join their non-hunting counterparts. The hunting takes place at sunset when the animals come to the fields to feed. Wild boar hunting originally happened in Central Italy and Maremma. Nowadays, you can hunt for them anywhere in Italy as they are populating all over the country. Fury as Victoria moves not to ban duck hunting despite inquiry recommendation Animal rights activists and politicians have slammed the Victorian government's decision to keep duck hunting legal, despite an inquiry recommending a ban on the controversial practice. The government today announced it would not ban hunting of duck species in Victoria despite a long-standing push to end the practice. Animal rights activists have labelled the decision inhumane, arguing that some species were under enormous pressure, while others were endangered. Victorian Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos confirmed the controversial decision today. "There are a diversity of views on this within the Victorian community and we've tried to listen to all of them," Dimopoulos said. "We accept that duck hunting is a legitimate activity that many thousands of Victorians enjoy and we want to make it safe, responsible and sustainable." The government plans to make changes to hunting laws to reduce the effects

Skylarks, starlings and mistle thrushes: Endangered songbirds licensed to be killed for sport in UK Skylarks, starlings and mistle thrushes are among the red-listed species approved to be hunted by falconers. Should endangered wild birds be hunted for sport? It sounds like an odd question to be asking in 2023, in the midst of a biodiversity crisis. Yet, at a time when many avian species in the UK are under threat of regional extinction, government data reveals falconers are permitted to hunt rare songbirds. The data, released this week by government watchdog Natural England, has caused concern among environmentalists. What is falconry and how is it regulated in the UK? Falconry involves hunting wild animals in their natural habitat using a trained bird of prey. There are reportedly around 25,000 falconers in the UK. The sport itself dates back hundreds of years, and it has seen a resurgence in recent times. While it remains legal throughout Britain, many outside the hobby are u

Even though the U.S. Department of Agriculture has now reversed its ill-timed Sept. 2 ban on importing game birds taken in Canada, waterfowl hunters throughout North America could still be impacted by the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza in migratory game birds during the coming months. Following a new ruling issued by the USDA on Sept. 12, American hunters are allowed to bring game bird meat back from Canada, but the birds must be cleaned, stored and transported as follows (which is different than how many people field-dress waterfowl): Viscera (innards), head, neck, feet, skin and one wing must be removed. Feathers must be removed, with the exception of one wing — as required by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for species identification. Carcasses must be rinsed in fresh, clean, potable water prior to packaging and must not have visible evidence of contamination with dirt, blood or feces. Carcasses must be imported in leak-proof plastic packaging and stored in a leak-proo

RSPB calls for emergency shooting ban during bird flu outbreak This article is more than 2 months old Shoots cause stress for migratory species such as Svalbard barnacle goose, whose numbers are down 38% The RSPB has called for an emergency shooting ban after an “unprecedented” outbreak of bird flu that has left wildfowl populations in “catastrophic decline”. Migratory geese that overwinter on the Solway Firth, which stretches between Scotland and Cumbria, are being hardest hit, with a 38% decline in the Svalbard barnacle goose breeding population from winter last year. While these are protected species and not subject to hunting, experts argue that pressure from wildfowlers on nearby, legal quarry species can have an impact. Shoots nearby can cause stress, scaring the birds into the air where they use up vital energy. Some estimates suggest the UK is facing the worst outbreak of avian influenza on record. Latest population counts of the Svalbard breeding population show a drop in nu

The Portuguese Pointer: A Hunter's Companion The Portuguese Pointer, or Perdigueiro Português, isn't a breed you see every day, but those in the know understand its value. These dogs are built for work, with a keen nose and a stamina that'll keep them going all day. What Can They Hunt? These pointers excel at upland game. Think: Partridge: This is their bread and butter, as their very name suggests. Perdigueiro literally translates to "partridge dog." Quail: They're quick, but a well-trained Portuguese Pointer can handle them. Pheasant: They can handle pheasant hunting, and their pointing instincts shine. Woodcock: Their ability to navigate dense cover makes them suitable for woodcock. Duck: A Portuguese Pointer can make a good duck-hunting dog. Where Will You Find Them? As the name implies, they're most common in Portugal, their country of origin. However, you'll also find them in: Spain: Across the border, they're gaining traction among hunters. Other parts of Europe: You
