What Gear Do I Need for My First Hunt? A Professional Hunter’s Guide Stepping into the world of hunting is more than just buying a rifle and heading into the woods. It’s about preparation, respect for the land, and having the right gear to ensure safety, success, and ethical practice. As someone who’s spent decades in the field — from frosty dawns in the Midwest to dry stalks in the Southwest — I’ve seen firsthand what gear matters and what’s just dead weight. This guide breaks down the essential hunting gear every beginner needs for their first hunt, based on real-world experience and practical use — not marketing hype. 🎯 1. The Right Weapon for the Game Your firearm or bow is your primary tool. Choose it based on the species you’re hunting and your local regulations. • Rifle: For deer, a bolt-action rifle chambered in .243, .270, or .308 is ideal for beginners — manageable recoil, good accuracy, and widely available ammo. • Shotgun: If you’re hunting birds or small game, a 12 o

Beretta BRX1 Rifle in .30-06 Review As an avid hunter, I recently had the opportunity to take the Beretta BRX1 rifle in .30-06 out for a deer hunt, and I wanted to share my experiences with fellow enthusiasts. After using this rifle on a challenging hunt, I have compiled a list of pros and cons based on my performance with the weapon. Pros: Versatility for All Shooters: One of the standout features of the BRX1 is its straight-pull bolt action, which accommodates both right-handed and left-handed shooters. This thoughtful design really impressed me, as it allowed for quick follow-up shots, especially when a deer appears unexpectedly. I felt comfortable using the rifle regardless of my shooting stance. Accuracy: The .30-06 caliber is renowned for its effectiveness in deer hunting, and the Beretta BRX1 lived up to those expectations. The rifle’s cold hammer-forged barrel ensured excellent consistency and precision in shot placement. During my hunt, I was able to make clean shots at di

CZ 550 LUX Rifle in .30-06 Caliber Review I recently had the opportunity to use the CZ 550 LUX rifle chambered in .30-06, and I feel compelled to share my experience with this exceptional firearm. As a longtime enthusiast and user of various hunting rifles, my expectations were high, and the CZ 550 LUX did not disappoint. Build Quality and Design The first thing that strikes you about the CZ 550 LUX is its aesthetic appeal. The hand-checkering on the stock provides a solid grip and lends an air of sophistication. The overall craftsmanship is evident, with attention to detail in the metalwork and wood finishing. The rifle also boasts a sturdy Mauser-style action, which is known for its reliability and smooth operation. The bolt action is very smooth, allowing for quick follow-up shots, which is often critical when in the field. The weight

8 Great New Hunting Rifles for 2022 Though I absolutely love those rifles which have been with me for decades, and have shared so many indelible memories, I still get excited to see the new crop of rifles introduced each year, and always ponder the possibilities of creating new memories with a new model. A hunting rifle can become a life-long friend, but like any friend, there’s the first time you meet, and like so many friendships, sometimes things don’t work out. Whether it’s a long-range bolt gun for sheep, elk and antelope, or a thumper of a lever gun destined to pursue bear in the spring vegetation, or an all-around deer gun, the possibilities are endless. Let’s take a gander at what’s new for 2022 for the American hunter.1. Marlin 1895 SBL and Trapper Rescued from the dustbin by Ruger, Marlin was purchased in the breakup of the Freedom Group, and they are coming back with a vengeance. The first of the new Marlin rifles to come off the line was the Model 1895 SBL, with its large

Hunting Squirrels: Which .22 is for You? Lever-action, single-shot, bolt-action, semi-automatic and pump. When we picture a .22-caliber rifle in our mind, one of these traditional guns is sure to appear. However, a new style is emerging as a great sporting tool. Lately, .22-caliber rifles are being built on tactical rifle frames. These guns may look a lot different, but when it comes to putting a round in a squirrel’s ear they all work the same. With squirrel season in full swing in the Midwest, what better time to take a look at America’s favorite rifle caliber. Literally billions of rounds of .22-caliber rimfire ammunition are fired each year. Most of it is shot while plinking and hunting squirrels and rabbits, though small varmints like groundhogs are also heavily hunted with rimfire guns Today, almost all rimfire ammo in common use is of .22-caliber, with only a few limited exceptions (like the .17 HMR). This was not always the case, however. One of the most sought-after "Yankee"

Small Game Alaska As we pushed our way through the waist deep snow the big snowshoe hare just sat there and waited. His “white” camouflage blended perfectly with the snow, but not quite good enough to keep me, and my 8-year old son, Eli from pushing forward. With each step I figured he would bolt, but he didn’t so we decided to keep moving towards him. I slowly raised the BowTech bow and settled the pin. In most states hunting small game usually takes a back seat to hunting big game, especially here in Alaska. With moose, caribou and sheep practically around every corner most people forget that the state also harbors some of the finest small game pursuits in the country. As hunters we all live for the fall and rightly so. Bears, sheep and goats are constantly on our minds and we absolutely cannot wait until the season opens. Like most people who chase animals either with a bow, rifle or shotgun it becomes a totally obsession that drives us not only throughout the year, but als

CZ Debuts 600 Series: A Firsthand View If Ford opted to replace the F150 with some new line of pickups, the new design better fill the category. The new series also better be loaded with innovations that aficionados of the brand really do want and need. It also should be close enough to the original beloved DNA of the brand that customers will be excited about, but still comfortable with, the change. 600 Alpha So when CZ said it developed a new 600 series of bolt-action rifles—guns that will reportedly replace the CZ 527 and CZ 557—and asked us to come to the Czech Republic to see them, we were excited about the prospect. We were hopeful they had designed a rifle that would be a smart replacement for established models. We were also hoping this new 600 series would send competitors scrambling for their SolidWorks programs to see how they could adjust to a new design in a very mature firearm category. Sling Loops on the 600 Lux 600 Lux In short, CZ didn’t disappoint. We’ll get you

I shot this button buck Saturday night while sitting at the base of a giant oak tree. Three does came out of the cedars earlier that evening, but they were about 155 yards away and moving at a pretty good clip. Then this young deer came out, and when he finally moved out from behind a couple trees in front of me, he stopped quartering toward me and gave me a shot at about 75 yards. I don’t prefer to hunt with a muzzleloader, but the December season seems to be about the only time I get the opportunity to hunt deer. The shot rang and after a moment of blindness, the smoke cleared. I saw the deer bolt about 50 yards to my right. I thought I’d missed him, but as he approached a couple lone cedar trees in the open, he made a sharp, confused U-turn, and then crashed down into the dry creek bed to the north. I almost expected him to get up and continue running over the hill, or slip away down the dry bed. Trembling, I reloaded my gun. If he was there, I needed to give him time to die with

The Right Way to Clean and Store Your Hunting Rifle Properly caring for your deer gun’s barrel and action ensures it’ll be ready to go again next fall Deer season is over, and now is the perfect time to give your rifle a thorough annual cleaning. Store your gun in a secure and rust-free environment and it will be in good working order when you break it out for a range session in a few months. Gun-Cleaning Gear To do the job right, you need to secure your rifle horizontally in a vise. A vise attached to a workbench at your house will work fine. Or you can purchase a portable gun vise from a company that specializes in firearms-cleaning accessories. Spend $40 or more for a universal gun-cleaning kit, which will include a three-piece bore rod and an assortment of jags, brushes, patches, and other accessories for cleaning not only your bolt-action, but also other handguns and long guns that you own. Also, and this is important, purchase a bore guide, which will protect the bore and action

The Mighty Dachshund: Small Dog, Big Hunting Power The Dachshund, often lovingly referred to as the "wiener dog", may be small, but it's a true powerhouse in the world of hunting. Originally bred in Germany, Dachshunds were designed for one primary purpose: to be fierce and determined hunting dogs, excelling at tracking and chasing burrowing animals like badgers, rabbits, and foxes. With their unique, low-to-the-ground muscular build, they can dig into dens and pursue prey where larger dogs can't go. Their keen sense of smell and exceptional tracking skills make them reliable companions for following a scent trail over long distances. Despite their size, Dachshunds have a bold and fearless nature, unafraid to confront prey directly. These dogs are not only strong but also agile. Their long, sturdy legs help them move swiftly when chasing animals, and their sharp reflexes make them adept at navigating through forests and fields. Whether working solo or in a pack, their loyalty, intel

Stylish Home Interiors Featuring Hunting Trophies: Bears, Foxes, Deer, and Iconic African Wildlife Transforming your home into a stylish haven can take on a unique twist when you incorporate hunting trophies. Character pieces like bears, foxes, deer, and famous African animals can add a striking visual element while paying homage to nature and the art of wildlife conservation. Surround it with a palette of warm browns, deep greens, and soft neutrals to enhance the natural aesthetic. You might also think about introducing a variety of textures through rustic wooden furniture and soft fabrics, like leather or wool, to create a cozy atmosphere. 10 Classic Hunting Rifles Every Hunter Should Own (Part 2) 4. Ruger No. 1 Single-shot hunting rifles aren’t what most of us have in mind when we think of the classics, but the Ruger No. 1 is one that has stood the test of time. It was introduced in 1967 and is a hammerless falling-block single shot that styled after the British Farquharson rifles and was offered in a plethora of chamberings and developed a cult-like following. In an article introducing the Ruger M/77 in the September 1968 issue of OL, O’Connor says the following regarding the still-new Ruger No. 1: “The production of a single-shot big-game rifle was a bold gamble on Ruger’s part. I am sure that 9 out of 10 market consultants would have said that the demand for single-shot rifles for centerfire cartridges had gone out with the mustache cup and the Stanley Steamer. In spite of all this and also in spite of the fact that Ruger gets a premium price for the No. 1 single shot, his (Bill Ruger) only problem has been to prod
