Belovezhskaya Pushcha, 1971.
In the 1970s, Belovezhskaya Pushcha—known in Polish as Białowieża Forest—was one of Europe’s last and largest remaining tracts of primeval lowland forest, straddling the border between the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (part of the USSR) and the Polish People's Republic. This ancient woodland, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, was a sanctuary for Europe’s most iconic wildlife, including several species of deer that played a vital role in the ecosystem and cultural life of the region.
During the 1970s, the forest was under strict state protection on both sides of the border, though management approaches differed. In the Soviet sector (Belarus), the forest was managed as a state reserve and forestry zone, while in Poland, the core area was a national park with limited human intervention. Despite Cold War divisions, scientific cooperation and conservation efforts continued, particularly regarding large mammals, including deer.

Wolf hunting is the practice of hunting wolves. Wolves are mainly hunted for sport, for their skins, to protect livestock and, in some rare cases, to protect humans. Wolves have been actively hunted since 8,000 to 10,000 years ago, when they first began to pose a threat to livestock of Neolithic human communities. Historically, the hunting of wolves was a huge capital- and manpower-intensive operation. The threat wolves posed to both livestock and people was considered significant enough to warrant the conscription of whole villages under threat of punishment, despite the disruption of economic activities and reduced taxes. The hunting of gray wolves, while originally actively endorsed in many countries, has become a controversial issue across the globe. Most people see it as cruel, unnecessary and based on misconceptions, while proponents argue that it is apparently vital for the conservation of game herds and as pest control.
GAME WARDEN RESCUES MULE DEER FROM MUD PIT
A mule deer doe is lucky to be alive after being rescued from quicksand-like mud in Idaho. The yearling sunk through a supposed “mud puddle” after she tried to walk across it in a field by Marsh Creek Road north of McCammon during Memorial Day weekend, according to a press release.
Fortunately, a homeowner spotted the doe, which was belly deep in the mud and helpless, and contacted Idaho Department of Fish and Game Senior Conservation Officer Nick Noll, who came to the animal’s rescue. Using wooden boards, a shovel, rope and Noll’s 15-year-old neighbor, Cole Gunter, the duo managed to rescue the deer from the sticky mud. Boards prevented them from also sinking as Noll and Gunter used the rope to secure the front and hind quarters of the doe, according to the agency.

Dogs are our friends, guardians, and, at one time, providers. Dogs and their owners hunted together 20,000 years ago, and some continue to do so today. Man no longer depends on wild game for survival, but hunting still has a place in the modern world. While agricultural improvements and the domestication of livestock lessened our dependence on hunting for survival, in its place, hunting for sport evolved. Even though hunting can be a controversial subject, there are many man-dog partnerships that participate in the sport in a respectful, responsible fashion that strengthens their bond.
