3 Top States for DIY Big Buck Hunters These three stops all have over-the-counter tags and great potential for shooting a trophy buck For a Do-It-Yourself hunter, nothing beats the simplicity of traveling to another state, buying a deer tag over the counter, and then going to the woods. There are plenty of places for us DIYers to hunt like that and probably get a shot at a deer, too. But not as many have strong trophy potential. A 2 1/2-year-old 8-pointer is cream of the crop for most public-land hunting in states like New York, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. If your personal standards are a bit higher than that — maybe you’re after 3 1/2-year and older bucks — you might be facing long odds in most OTC states, at least on public lands. But shooting a mature buck on public land is within the realm of possibility in a few places, for hardworking hunters. These three states — all with OTC tags —have proven that they can regularly produce mature deer, and have some good public hunting to boPost: 8 August 21:28
The Perfect Bowhunting Equipment for Alaska One thing I used to always think about is if I have the right bow setup for hunting in Alaska. I am going to cover some things that have helped me choose the perfect bow setup for me to hunt the backcountry of Alaska. I am no expert by any means, but I have hunted a lot throughout Alaska and the Lower 48 and this is what has been the all-around best setup for me. There are several factors that go into making a choice for the setup you want to bowhunt with. The first and sometimes the hardest thing you have to choose is your bow! I like to start with a bow that is light in weight, compact but not too compact, and produces good arrow speed. For example, the bow I am shooting currently is the Xpedition Archery Xscape. The bare bow weighs around 3.9 pounds. It measures 30-inches ATA (axle to axle), with an International Bowhunters Organization (IBO) speed 348- to 352 feet per second (FPS). This bow is fairly light, compact and offers great speePost: 13 June 12:59

Alaska officials have cancelled the upcoming snow crab season, due to population decline across the Bering Sea. The fall Bristol Bay red king crab harvest will not happen. The winter harvest of smaller snow crab has also been cancelled for the first time. The causes of the population collapse are being researched but likely include increased predation and stresses from warmer water, which the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) believes may have prompted the crabs to shift away from coasts. Bear hunting is the act of hunting bears. Bear have been hunted since prehistoric times for their meat and fur. In addition to being a source of food, in modern times they have been favored by big game hunters due to their size and ferocity. Bear hunting has a vast history throughout Europe and North America, and hunting practices have varied based on location and type of bear. Bear are large mammals in the order Carnivora. Although there are only eight living species of bear, they are widespread, appearing in a wide variety of habitats throughout the Northern Hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere. The IUCN lists six bear species as vulnerable or endangered, and even "least concern" species such as the brown bear are at risk of extirpation in certain countries. Poaching and illegal international trade of threatened populations continues.Post: 27 June 20:21

Minnesota deer hunting: Fewer deer harvested in first 9 days MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - Minnesota's hunters have harvested fewer deer during the first nine days of the firearms deer season than last year, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The DNR says hunters have taken more than 106,000 deer statewide since the firearms deer season began earlier this month. That's a 5% drop from last year. Northeastern Minnesota saw the sharpest decline, with nearly 17% fewer deer harvested compared to this time last year. Post: 16 November 09:05

An Inuit hunter stands over a dead polar bear. November 26, 1924, USA The Inuit are an ethnic group of indigenous peoples of North America living in the vast northern territories of Canada from the Labrador Peninsula to the mouth of the Mackenzie River, as well as in Alaska. One of the main activities of the Inuit is hunting wild animals. Inuit have made a living from hunting on land, on the sea, on the ice. Through time, marine mammals, terrestrial mammals, fish and birds have been the basis of food and clothing, light and heat, tools and means of transportation, such as dog sleds, kayaks and large skin boats. That way all Inuit live was evolved with the hunting culture. The sustenance of families and settlements has relied heavily on favourable hunting conditions and successful catches. Hunting has therefore traditionally been a key focal point in the organisation of Arctic communities, where roles and responsibilities have been defined by hunting activities. Labour accuses Government of being ‘complicit’ in trophy trade Delays to the Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill have led to accusations that Conservative peers are slowing the Bill intentionally. Labour has accused the Government of being “complicit” in trophy hunting after a bill that would see imports banned in the UK became tied up in the House of Lords. Commons leader Penny Mourdaunt has insisted that MPs will get another chance to debate the Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill, though more Parliamentary time will have to be allocated. Opposition politicians accused Conservative peers of filibustering and trying to prevent the Bill from becoming law. Added amendments were branded last week as “death by a thousand cuts” in Parliament, with 62 being added separately. Those making changes have denied trying to “kill the Bill”, instead insisting they want to improve it. Labour is urging the Government to stop “dither and delaying” and revive the Bill’s chances of Post: 22 November 17:33
Scheme to protect hen harriers in England a waste of money, says wildlife group Wild Justice says government initiative to relocate broods away from grouse moors ‘rewards past crimes’ of illegal killing A £900,000 government scheme to “meddle” with nests of hen harriers is a waste of money and rewards those who kill them, a wildlife campaign group has said. The claims are contained in a report produced by Wild Justice and released to coincide with the Glorious Twelfth, the official start of the grouse shooting season, on Saturday. Grouse moor gamekeepers have historically killed hen harriers illegally because they eat smaller birds, including grouse. Since the start of a government brood management scheme in 2018, 98 hen harriers have been confirmed as missingin suspicious circumstances or are known to have been illegally killed in the UK, many of them on or close to English grouse moors. I'm not sure if/when I will be able to ride her again but I want to keep her life enriched as long as she can move around and is not in pain. I'd love some liberty lessons and connections to any resources (clinics, books, online programs, facebook groups, etc) to learn about this type of horsemanship. Alaska’s Mountain Goat Alaska’s other species of all-white, hoofed, large mammal is the mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus), inhabiting steep and broken mountain terrain from southeast Alaska to Prince William Sound and the Kenai Peninsula. Goats are found from near sea level to over 10,000 feet, and in Southcentral they are generally confined to the Chugach and Wrangell mountains, although their range extends into the Talkeetna Mountains, nearly to Denali National Park. Mountain goats have also been transplanted to Kodiak and Baranof islands where they have established secure populations. Billies are similar in appearance to nannies, with a large, stocky shape and an average weight of 200 pounds. They have gradual curving horns. Nannies are smaller in size and weigh approximately 160 pounds, with slender horns that curve sharply near the tip. Goats are relatively abundant throughout their Alaska range, particularly in southeast Alaska, but many goats live in areas that are beyond thPost: 3 November 23:17
WHEN TO DRAW One of the biggest obstacles when staring down a big whitetail is deciding when to draw. There is no easy answer. First, consider the buck’s travel path. It doesn’t do much good to draw if his current path doesn’t have the potential to bring him by your stand. Drawing too early often means you’ll have to let down your string — something that creates a lot of movement. Second, look at the buck’s speed. If he’s moving briskly (most often during the rut) and you expect him to pass through a shooting lane soon, the top priority is to draw and be ready. If he’s taking his time, then so should you. Drawing undetected is a big first step, but obstacles remain. You still have to send an arrow to a rather small target through space often cluttered with branches and leaves. Identify openings that could present shot opportunities ahead of time.Post: 29 September 08:41
Kingfishers or Alcedinidae are a family of small to medium-sized, brightly colored birds in the order Coraciiformes. They have a cosmopolitan distribution, with most species found in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Oceania but also can be seen in Europe. They can be found in deep forests near calm ponds and small rivers. The family contains 114 species and is divided into three subfamilies and 19 genera. All kingfishers have large heads, long, sharp, pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails. Most species have bright plumage with only small differences between the sexes. Most species are tropical in distribution, and a slight majority are found only in forests. They consume a wide range of prey usually caught by swooping down from a perch. While kingfishers are usually thought to live near rivers and eat fish, many species live away from water and eat small invertebrates. Like other members of their order, they nest in cavities, usually tunnels dug into the natural or artifPost: 12 July 11:31
Hunting the Modern Cottontail Rabbit A New Age Has Dawned in the World of Rabbit Hunting Hunters have been pursuing the Eastern cottontail ever since the time of the earliest Native Americans. Although hunter numbers have declined from peak numbers, rabbit hunting still remains extremely popular overall and is one of the most popular small game pursuits. However, the dynamics of hunting cottontails have changed dramatically, and to achieve consistent success in the field, hunters must adapt to the new age of rabbit hunting. The Decline Bunny Facts: The number of rabbit hunters has declined through the years. Even so, rabbit hunting is still popular. According to recent surveys, approximately 1.5 million people hunt rabbits and/or hares. Rabbit/hare hunting ranked as the fourth most popular hunting endeavor, tied with pheasant hunting and behind only whitetail deer, turkey, and squirrel. Rabbit hunting ranked more popular than waterfowl and dove hunting, as well as all other species sPost: 4 July 21:28
Wolf season shuts down early in southwestern Montana Too many Yellowstone wolves have been trapped or killed by hunters during Montana’s wolf season, resulting in a call by wildlife commissioners to shut the season down early in the southwestern portion of the state. To date, 76 wolves have been reported killed. Once that number hits 82, hunting and trapping will be over for the area this season, according to the Associated Press. In December, Superintendent Cam Sholly asked commissioners to suspend hunting in areas along the park’s borders, stating that “park wolves spend only 5% of their time outside the park.” So far, 23 wolves from Yellowstone packs have been killed – 18 in Montana, three in Wyoming and two in Idaho – sparking park officials to worry that it could mark “a significant setback for the long-term viability” of these packs. Currently, there are only 91 wolves within the park borders, according to spokesperson Morgan Warthin. As goHUNT previously reported, the statePost: 22 March 10:29

Any youth (age 17 and younger) who has completed an online hunter education class will be able to hunt on their own tag, even if they haven’t completed the required in-person field day. With fewer hunter education classes/field days offered this year due to COVID-19, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will defer the field day requirement for youth hunters for the 2021 hunting season. The field day will still be required to get a hunter education certificate, but can be delayed until after hunting season. “This will provide additional time for any young hunter to get their hunter education certification,” said Antonio Salgado, ODFW Recruitment/Retention/Reactivation Coordinator. “They will still have to complete a field day to be fully certified. Pennsylvania Will Finally Allow Limited Sunday Deer Hunting. Pennsylvania deer hunters have reason to celebrate after lawmakers have done away with a “blue law,” which prohibited hunting on Sundays in the Keystone State for more than 100 years. Gov. Tom Wolf is expected to sign the law, which will allow hunters to hunt one Sunday during rifle season, one Sunday during archery season, and one Sunday to be determined by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The law also requires hunters to have written permission to hunt private land on Sunday (oral permission is fine on the other six days of the week.) Of course, it’s still up to private landowners to decide whether to allow hunting on their property. Sunday deer hunting has been illegal in Pennsylvania since the 1800s, although there are exceptions for coyotes, foxes, crows and non-commercial game preserves. Blue laws date back to a time when lawmakers thought it was appropriate to encourage people to attend church on Sunday instead ofPost: 27 September 20:08

Hunting Can Be Good for Wildlife Populations – If Managed Correctly. This may sound counterintuitive, but reducing the number of animals in a population can help the remaining individuals to survive through the winter. “Harvesting or other means of regulating an animal population can sometimes have a positive effect by reducing the competition for food,” says Bart Peeters, a postdoctoral fellow at NTNU’s (the Norwegian University of Science and Technology) Department of Biology. This only makes sense for species limited by food availability. The results of the study have been published in the journal Ecology Letters and could prove useful in managing various species.Post: 1 March 15:16
