Naivis Gen 2+ Night Vision Scope: Honest Hunter's Review Look, I've been hunting for over 20 years. I've seen gear come and go, and I'm not easily impressed by fancy gadgets. I decided to give the Naivis Gen 2+ night vision scope a try, hoping it would give me an edge during those low-light hunts. I paired it with the Naivis 850nm IR illuminator, which I'll touch on later. Here's my honest take: Naivis Gen 2+ The Good: Decent Image Quality (For Gen 2+): Let's be clear, it's not Gen 3 clarity, but for the price point and being a Gen 2+, the image is surprisingly good. It provides a usable image in fairly dark conditions, allowing target identification out to a reasonable distance (about 150-200 yards in my experience). It definitely beats trying to hunt with binos and a prayer. Sturdy Build: The scope feels solid. It's been bumped around in my pack, endured some light rain, and still holds zero. That's crucial when you're out in the bush. Adjustable Brightness: The ability to adjus

Will Brantley and Mike Hanback talk long-range glassing, big bucks in Indiana, and pre-season plans in the Realtree Outpost podcast It's late August and still hot, but there's hope in the air, too. Kentucky's squirrel season opened this past weekend, and Tennessee's early three-day "velvet" archery season opened today. With luck, I'll be in a treestand this weekend. We're right on the eve of one of the best times of year, and there's no better time to debut Season 3 of Realtree's Outpost Podcast. This week, I joined fellow blogger and Big Deer TV host Mike Hanback to discuss a variety of pre-season topics. We covered long-range glassing tactics (as detailed here), and discussed why they're still so effective, especially in the early season, and even more so than trail cameras. We discussed plans for this fall, strategies for hunting the drought-stricken West, and personal goals for another season. Then we shifted gears to talk about Josh Honeycutt's recent (and fascinating) story on

2100 kilometers in three days, a couple late nights and busy talking to people and giving presentations at the Parkland Outdoor Show & Expo could wear a person out but the energy at this show kept us so energized. It was really humbling talking to people there that said they'd driven all the way from Manitoba or distant locations in Saskatchewan just to meet us. The only downside to to the show was that virtually everyone that we chatted with had a picture of a bigger deer on their phone than TJ has ever taken ;) It was pretty cool spending time with several of the top TV show hosts and outdoor personalities in Canada. We work in a pretty amazing industry with a bunch of amazing people. Sharing the stage with them at the Royal Rumble was pretty entertaining. Thanks to LIVE 2 HUNT with Cody and Kelsy for emceeing this question and answer session, even though he was afraid to have a push up competition. ;) And thanks to all the people that we shared a stage with. Goats may help prevent wildfires in California as drought worsens The voracious herbivores are being deployed to clear invasive plants throughout wildlands as another catastrophic fire season looms. For the past six years, Alissa Cope’s California company has contracted out goat herds to various clients who need the animals to chow down on unwanted vegetation and invasive plants. “When we got started it was for habitat restoration, and I just got tired of dumping gallons of herbicide on everything,” says Cope, owner of the Sage Environmental Group, a company that specializes in environmental planning with a natural resource focus. “When goats eat the seed, it goes through their digestive tract, and it becomes nonviable. It doesn't grow after it comes out the other end, which is really amazing.”

England and Wales law on foxhunting unworkable, says police chief Trail hunts used as a loophole for unlawful chasing and killing of animals, Matt Longman tells campaigners England’s most senior police officer on foxhunting has said the law on the crime is not working because it permits trail hunts that have become a “smokescreen” for the continued illegal persecution of animals. Ch Supt Matt Longman, the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead on foxhunting, was speaking at the launch of a coalition against illegal hunting led by the League Against Cruel Sports and backed by more than 30 charities including the RSPCA. Longman, the police commander for Plymouth, said: “The Hunting Act is not working effectively and illegal hunting is still common practice.” Under the act, hunting mammals with hounds is banned but trail hunts using the scent of animals are allowed to take place. Longman said hunts were using trail hunts as a loophole to carry on hunting foxes and other animals. He said:

An Inuit hunter stands over a dead polar bear. November 26, 1924, USA The Inuit are an ethnic group of indigenous peoples of North America living in the vast northern territories of Canada from the Labrador Peninsula to the mouth of the Mackenzie River, as well as in Alaska. One of the main activities of the Inuit is hunting wild animals. Inuit have made a living from hunting on land, on the sea, on the ice. Through time, marine mammals, terrestrial mammals, fish and birds have been the basis of food and clothing, light and heat, tools and means of transportation, such as dog sleds, kayaks and large skin boats. That way all Inuit live was evolved with the hunting culture. The sustenance of families and settlements has relied heavily on favourable hunting conditions and successful catches. Hunting has therefore traditionally been a key focal point in the organisation of Arctic communities, where roles and responsibilities have been defined by hunting activities. Hunting itself has

Farewell to My Beloved Gitane – 13 Incredible Years Au revoir ma belle Gitane, my first draht, and a dog with an exceptional passion. For 13 years, you showed an incredible spirit and strength. Whether pulling a wild boar from a thicket or catching it minutes later in a pond in the middle of the plains, your power and persistence never failed. In the same day, you'd point out woodcocks, and I might have missed them, but you were always spot on. You've endured so much, with countless staples because nothing could stop your sheer will. You've also left behind a legacy, producing amazing dogs with Clint du Moulin de Berlemont: Jasper, Lacoste, Laïka, Lisière, N'Gumper, Nestor, and Oural. You were so full of trust, even staying loose in the back of the pickup truck on the highway, heading to Aisne for breeding. You truly earned your honors, my old Gitane. Your legacy lives on in every hunt, every memory, and every pup you've brought into this world. #DrahtHaar #HuntingDogs #FarewellToA

The 5 Best Thermal Monoculars of 2024 Everybody wants to know what goes bump in the night, even if it doesn’t bump and even if it’s not nighttime. Happily, thermal monoculars, a new and energetic category of gear, often identify what used to be invisible. They can help you see everything from human intruders on the other side of a fence, to coyotes and raccoons crouching in the dark, to a problematic wire in a household electrical outlet. We’re talking about monoculars, rangefinders, and cameras that use temperature variations, rather than visible light, to form images that can be captured as photographs or videos, or simply delivered to your eye to answer that ancient question: what’s out there? I’ve used this new class of “optics” over the past year to find newborn calves in a deadly blizzard, to find my ice-fishing buddies in the fog, to detect hidden electrical problems that might burn my house down, to hunt coyotes at midnight, and to finally even the odds on crop-raiding feral

Pennsylvania Will Finally Allow Limited Sunday Deer Hunting. Pennsylvania deer hunters have reason to celebrate after lawmakers have done away with a “blue law,” which prohibited hunting on Sundays in the Keystone State for more than 100 years. Gov. Tom Wolf is expected to sign the law, which will allow hunters to hunt one Sunday during rifle season, one Sunday during archery season, and one Sunday to be determined by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The law also requires hunters to have written permission to hunt private land on Sunday (oral permission is fine on the other six days of the week.) Of course, it’s still up to private landowners to decide whether to allow hunting on their property. Sunday deer hunting has been illegal in Pennsylvania since the 1800s, although there are exceptions for coyotes, foxes, crows and non-commercial game preserves. Blue laws date back to a time when lawmakers thought it was appropriate to encourage people to attend church on Sunday instead of

Algeria lifts 25 year long ban on hunting The Algerian government has announced it is lifting the ban on hunting imposed more than 25 years ago because of an Islamist insurgency that was raging at the time, this is according to a report by the BBC. The ban is said to have led to a surge in the population of boars, causing a big nuisance in rural areas where they damaged agricultural land. Authorized hunting will now be able to take place for the next six months, Agriculture Minister Abdelhamid Hamdani was quoted by the Algerian press agency as saying. In the early 1990s, the authorities decided to confiscate hunting guns and ban hunting after armed insurgents started to steal the weapons and use them in their attacks. The ban on hunting other animals and birds has also been lifted.

🦌 Successful Roe Deer Hunt Today: A Day to Remember This morning’s hunt was a textbook example of patience and preparation paying off. After tracking signs near the forest edge, I spotted a mature roe buck moving cautiously through the mist-covered brush. One clean shot — ethical, quick, and respectful. The gear, the wind, and timing all aligned perfectly. There’s something special about roe deer hunting: the quiet strategy, the light step, and the reward of reading nature correctly. If you’re new to stalking or planning your first roe deer hunt this season, now’s a great time — movement is high, and conditions are favorable. #RoeDeerHunting #SuccessfulHunt #HuntingStory #FieldNotes #StalkingGame #DeerHunterLife #EthicalHunting #EuropeanHunting #BigGameSeason #HuntingExperience

ZIMBABWE'S TOURISM CRIPPLED BY EBOLA, TAX, AND A HUNTING BAN The Zimbabwe Tourism Council has reacted to this impending ban by expressing its disappointment with this action which might have substantial impact on the hunting industry and thus on the already crippled tourism industry of the country. USA is the biggest market for Zimbabwe’s hunting packages, which are likely to be affected, but the ban also causes fear that other countries will follow such example. The argument behind these fears is that hunters will be discouraged by the fact that they can’t import their hunted goods, and they will stop hunting altogether. The ban comes after a tourist shot ‘Cecil, the Lion’, a popular Zimbabwe attraction, and is only the latest in a growing list of bans on local hunting products.

Review of the Carl Zeiss 8x42 HD Conquest Binoculars I recently had the opportunity to use the Carl Zeiss 8x42 HD Conquest binoculars, and I must say, they are impressive in many ways. Here’s my honest assessment based on my experience. Optical Quality: The optics on these binoculars are exceptional. The 8x magnification combined with a 42mm objective lens offers a bright, clear image even in low-light conditions. The HD glass provides excellent color fidelity and contrast, which is particularly noticeable when observing wildlife or landscapes. I was amazed by the sharpness of the images at various distances, and there was minimal distortion at the edges of the field of view. Build and Design: The build quality is solid, with a robust and durable construction that feels premium in hand. The rubber armor provides a good grip and adds a layer of protection against bumps and drops. Weighing in at a reasonably manageable 24 ounces, they are comfortable to hold for extended periods, th
