Blacktail deer are some of the toughest deer to hunt in North America. They inhabit thick forests in western California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia where visibility is often very short and hunting season nearly always coincides with bad weather. I got a firsthand lesson in just how difficult these elusive deer are to hunt when I spent the first week of the Washington late muzzleloader season hunting blacktail deer. With a little bit of help and some endurance, it all worked out and I managed to bag my first blacktail deer.Post: 28 March 10:18
How do cats learn to hunt? Cats learn to hunt the same way most mammals learn things – from their mother. Hunting is a great skill which needs to be learned first, which is almost always taught by their mother or through play with their litter mates. As your cat grows older, they may take this new found skill outside and eventually start bringing prey home, which may be anything from mice and birds to larger prey such as rabbits. If you have an indoor cat on the other hand, they may display these cat hunting behaviours through playing with their toys.Post: 10 August 11:12
WHAT IS HARE HUNTING? Hare hunting involves the pursuing of hares by a pack of harriers, beagles, or bassets with followers either on foot or on horseback. The Association of Masters of Harriers and Beagles lists 71 current hare hunts that are still operating. Similar to the fox hunting season, hare hunting takes place between late August until March. However, whilst fox hunting takes place all over the country, hare hunting tends to be limited to certain areas and this is because hares stay within their territory. Hares spend the entirety of their lives above ground and so during the chase they do not seek safety underground like foxes do. This means they tend to stick to the area that they know and run in loops whilst being pursued by the hounds. Hare hunts can often last up to an hour with hares desperately doing everything they can to escape. Ultimately the hare being hunted will give up from exhaustion and be caught by the faster hounds before it is ripped to pieces.Post: 17 June 09:44

An old legend tells how a bear and an eagle lived for a long time in peace and harmony with each other. They shared their lives in the forest and often met in a clearing, where they exchanged stories and news. One day, a bear and an eagle argued about which of them was better and stronger. The bear claimed that he was the main master of the forest and had great power, while the eagle objected that he was the king of heaven and had a more majestic appearance. The dispute between them began to heat up, and they could not come to an agreement. Each of them was convinced that he was right and that his point of view was the only true one. Their differences became more and more serious, and they stopped communicating with each other. Thus, the bear and the eagle quarreled and no longer maintained friendly relations. The forest began to lose its harmony, and the animals could no longer enjoy the same freedom as before. This legend reminds us of how hostility and disagreement can destroy hPost: 5 March 22:06

Hunting dog survives 50-foot fall into well, rescued by Texas game wardens Maria, a bird dog, was chasing an injured quail when she went missing. Texas game wardens had to get a bit creative while rescuing a hunting dog name Maria who found herself lost at the bottom of a well in South Texas during a recent hunting trip. According to the game wardens blotter, during the course of the quail hunt on a property in Jim Hogg County, Maria had chased an injured bird through a thicket and didn't return, which worried her owners. They began an immediate search and eventually found her trapped about 50 feet down at the bottom of a well on the property. Game wardens in Jim Hogg County, typically tasked with enforcing the state's hunting and wildlife laws, were quick to arrive and used a makeshift pulley system to lower a kennel to the bottom. Inside the kennel, they placed hunted quail to entice Maria inside, wardens said. After some time, the pup eventually moved into the crate. Maria waPost: 22 March 09:57

How many crocodile teeth? What is special about crocodile teeth? How strong is a crocodile bite? The teeth of the crocodiles order are remarkable (and they are placed in a reinforced skull with the most powerful biting muscles). Do crocodiles lose their teeth with age? Extant crocodiles are polyphiodonts, that is, their teeth are continually replaced during a large part of their life. Firstly, each tooth is renewed in 1-2 years (their teeth are hollow inside, and brand-new and sharp teeth develop in these cavities as they wear out). Secondly, unlike most reptiles, crocodiles have a peculiar differentiation of teeth in size, shape, and even function. At the beginning of each jaw, there are four large canine teeth that serve to effectively capture prey. In the middle of the jaw, the teeth are thicker, increase in length more evenly and form a kind of scissor bite that allows you to cut the fillets of the deceased corpse of the captured victim. At the base of the jaw, the teeth expaPost: 25 March 04:02
Hunting for a Hare with a Dog: A Day in the Field with ROS the Spaniel Today, my red spaniel ROS showed exceptional skill in tracking a wounded hare. He picked up the scent of the injured animal, chased it down with determination, and finished the job with a clear voice. The emotions I’m feeling right now are overwhelming - not because of the hunt itself, but because of the dog’s incredible work. Thanks to ROS, there’s no wounded animal left suffering in the field. I’m sure many hunters will understand this feeling. While there are breeds that might perform this task even more spectacularly, ROS is my dog, and this was only his second time hunting hare. It’s all part of his training, and I’m proud to share how it went. Here’s how it unfolded: We entered a thicket and emerged into a small clearing. I spotted a hare running along the edge of the field, clearly flushed out by hunters who had gone further ahead. I took a couple of shots through the tall grass, but ROS didn’t see tPost: 3 January 11:06

We don't usually think of moose hunting as the kind of hunting when we need to do a lot of glassing. While standing in a good spot and calling can be successful, my favoured approach is to use optics to locate bulls. Once I have identified a good one, I plan a stalk and get close enough to begin calling. You can see in these images how the team was all glassing. We knew there was a bull out there, but the terrain provided a lot of cover and it wasn't easy to locate him. Once we located him and his cows, we took our bearings and crossed the lake to stalk. Within a short time, we had our bull down. #BBD (big bull down).Post: 21 March 19:14
Hunting in France: the hunt or chasse Hunting in France is, at least in rural parts, an institution. It has apparently not shown a decline in numbers in recent decades (although a lot of the hunters appear rather elderly...). Hunters in France come from all social backgrounds, which probably in part explains the lack of hostility to hunting that is seen in those countries where it is largely the gentry who control the hunting. Hunting is to be distinguished from 'pest control'. Control of foxes, ragondin or pigeons for example, usually falls to local specialists rather than the main hunters. Hunters are usually looking for deer, hares, rabbits and wild boar, and game birds such as partridge or pheasant. In France hunters almost always hunt with dogs, but usually on foot - less commonly on horseback. The dogs may be owned by the individual owners or by the hunt as a whole. The dogs belong to specific breeds of hunt dog. Most hunters in France belong to a specific type of 'pack of hunPost: 14 June 17:07
Fox Hunting in Britain Fox hunting has been occurring in different guises worldwide for hundreds of years. Indeed the practise of using dogs with a keen sense of smell to track prey has been traced back to ancient Egypt and many Greek and Roman influenced countries. However it is believed that the custom for a fox to be tracked, chased and often killed by trained hunting hounds (generally those with the keenest sense of smell known as ‘scent hounds’) and followed by the Master of the Foxhounds and his team on foot and horseback, originated from a Norfolk farmer’s attempt to catch a fox using farm dogs in 1534. Whilst foxes were widely regarded as vermin and farmers and other landowners had hunted the animals for many years as a form of pest control (both to curb their attacks on farm animals and for their highly prized fur) it wasn’t until the eighteenth century that fox hunting developed into it’s most modern incarnation and was considered a sport in its own right as a result of thePost: 26 May 12:32

Let’s break it down - not with marketing fluff, but with real-world data, mechanical insight, and field-proven experience. 🔧 What Determines Shotgun Longevity? Before we talk numbers, it’s important to understand what affects a shotgun’s lifespan: • Round count (volume of fire) • Maintenance habits • Environmental exposure (saltwater, dust, cold) • Build quality and materials • Design of the action (inertia vs. gas) Benelli’s reputation for durability stems from its inertia-drivenPost: 2 July 16:21

Cyclists hospitalised after hornet attack in France What are hornets? Hornets are the largest of the wasp family native to Europe. Like bees, hornets live in large colonies with a single queen and thousands of workers and build their nests from tree fibres. While hornets usually prefer to avoid contact with humans, they will sting as a defence mechanism in response to having their nest disturbed, and can be aggressive near their food source too. Hornets hunt insects like beetles, moths, dragonflies and wasps. They will also eat rotting fruit they might find on the ground.Post: 9 August 18:21

Once you have your gear ready, it's time to head out to the water. Look for areas with plenty of vegetation, as pike tend to hide in these spots. Cast your line and wait patiently for a bite. 5 Best States for Pig Hunting Looking to hit the road for a hog hunt? These five stops are prime for swine Feral hogs are one of the country’s great ecological disasters. Few pests are more difficult to control, or more immediately detrimental to native ecosystems. In fact, some biologists consider hogs to be the most destructive invasive species on the planet. Though their spread across the United States has been slowed a bit over the past few years, thanks to smart regulations and trapping measures, wild pigs are nonetheless here to stay in many parts of the country. Unfortunately, new pig populations most often arise because people intentionally relocate them in hopes of hunting them. That’s why states without existing pig problems have actually taken to outlawing pig hunting — much to the consternation of local hunters who can’t understand how not shooting pigs is actually the best way to control them. But the reality is, pigs breed too fast, and are too intelligent, to control thPost: 23 May 11:28

Whether you want to go after big game, upland game, waterfowl or even a cougar or black bear, check the applicable hunting guidebook for details about basic requirements, harvest limits and field regulations.
