Pheasant shoots scaled back across UK after bird flu import bans Pheasant shoots across the UK are being shut down or dramatically scaled back this year because of import bans on the birds after an outbreak of bird flu. A huge number of the gamebirds shot in the country are imported from factory farms in Europe. Experts have said this practice should stop or be reduced because it risks spreading disease and has troubling implications for native nature and biodiversity. Just under 50 million pheasants are usually released each year from continental farms. A recent study suggested that at their peak in August each year, non-native common pheasants and red-legged partridges make up about half of all wild bird biomass in Britain. The annual shooting season begins on 1 October. Jeff Knott, the central and eastern England director at the RSPB, said: “The most important thing from our perspective is the bird flu situation underlines the risks of importing and releasing millions of birds i

RSPB calls for emergency shooting ban during bird flu outbreak This article is more than 2 months old Shoots cause stress for migratory species such as Svalbard barnacle goose, whose numbers are down 38% The RSPB has called for an emergency shooting ban after an “unprecedented” outbreak of bird flu that has left wildfowl populations in “catastrophic decline”. Migratory geese that overwinter on the Solway Firth, which stretches between Scotland and Cumbria, are being hardest hit, with a 38% decline in the Svalbard barnacle goose breeding population from winter last year. While these are protected species and not subject to hunting, experts argue that pressure from wildfowlers on nearby, legal quarry species can have an impact. Shoots nearby can cause stress, scaring the birds into the air where they use up vital energy. Some estimates suggest the UK is facing the worst outbreak of avian influenza on record. Latest population counts of the Svalbard breeding population show a drop in nu

Last weekend, I embarked on an unforgettable hunting trip in the heart of California’s wilderness. Armed with my gear and a sense of adventure, I set out to explore the rugged terrain. The forest was alive with the sounds of nature, from the rustling leaves to the distant calls of wildlife. As I trekked deeper into the woods, I encountered a variety of game, including black bears and wild pigs. The thrill of the hunt was palpable, and every moment was a testament to the beauty and challenge of the great outdoors. One of the highlights of the trip was spotting a majestic mule deer. With careful precision and respect for the animal, I took my shot. The experience was both humbling and exhilarating, reminding me of the importance of conservation and responsible hunting practices. Spanish style Sometimes trophy hunters want to unwind on a hunt - without overcoming, overexertion and overload. We recommend you the most exciting hunt for 🐔partridge in Spain. 👏 Everyone will be able to shoot a lot and qualitatively, have fun with friends, relax - thereby getting an emotional charge for a long time! Traditionally in 🇪🇸 Spain, a hunt is carried out by driving. The beaters flush the partridges at some distance from the hunters and direct them to the line of shooters. Every day, 4-5 drives are organized with a break for lunch. On average, it is possible to get 500-800 birds per day. ℹ️ During the day, the hunters change places in the order determined by the drawing. Thus, everyone has the opportunity to try their hand both in the center of the line and on its edges. The hunter is joined at the position by assistants: a "cargador" who reloads the weapon, and a "secretario" who adjusts the direction of the shot and keeps count of the birds killed. There are still

After my weekend training in Moscow shooting club, I remembered an outstanding meeting. It took place last September at the ADIHEX 2024, Abu Dhabi hunting exhibition. On a photo one of the fastest shooters on the planet, Raniero Testa. He had already set several world records and continues to surprise with new ones. Only after trying yourself in some kind of sport or art, you can really understand how difficult it is. What kind of effort and dedication does it take to become the best in what you do. I have great respect for all real professionals regardless of the type of activity. Raniero Testa (Italy) holds the record by throwing 17 sports clay targets with his hands and smashing them with 17 shots. And that's not all: the clay targets were hit in a record time of 2.08 seconds. If you count it, it turns out that the combined Raniero/Winchester SX4 produced a rate of fire of 490 rounds per minute – higher than the rate of fire of the M3 “Grease Gun" submachine gun!! WHY YOU NEED TO BE HUNTING SQUIRRELS RIGHT NOW What if I told you about a hunting opportunity that’s happening right now, which offers abundant access to productive land, requires a minimum of technical gear, and provides the chance to bring home tasty meat that is routinely overlooked for its palatability? You’d probably think I was blowing smoke, but I’m talking about one of the most neglected and productive hunts in the U.S.—for common tree squirrels. Squirrel seasons start now, in the lazy days of late summer, giving you time (and an excuse) to get out in the woods to scout for deer while also ground-truthing the gear that you’ll rely on all autumn. But you don’t need an excuse to go squirrel hunting. The first argument in its favor is that squirrels live almost everywhere, from the leafy hardwoods of the East to the piney woods of the South to the mountains of the West. Squirrel hunting is also a great way to introduce new shooters to small-game hunting. The two squirrel spe

The fundamentals of shooting a shotgun are vital to becoming a successful dove hunter, as there are many things that contribute to actually hitting the target. You must avoid mental breakdowns and learn how to keep your mind from getting in the way of your fundamentals. In this article we will look in-depth at what those fundamentals are. Stance Your stance when shooting a shotgun should be different from shooting other guns. The placement of your feet is critical in having a smooth motion when taking a shot. For right-handed shooters, stand with your left foot in front of your right, about shoulder width apart or just under. Making the Traditional Bow Switch Trading your compound bow for a recurve adds a whole new twist to your bowhunting experience Over the past few years, traditional archery has surged in popularity among recreational shooters and bowhunters alike. For many, making the switch from a compound to a recurve or long bow is a way to increase the challenge of a hunt; for others, it’s a way to embrace the simplicity of traditional archery. Choosing to bowhunt with traditional gear not only requires hunters to get closer to game but also to spend a significant amount of time practicing with their equipment to become proficient. When it comes to equipment selection and shooting style, there are many differences between a stick bow and a wheel bow that can be confusing for traditional newcomers. So, I recruited the help of long-time traditional bowhunter Travis “T-Bone” Turner to help you understand where to get started with traditional archery. Welsh corgi, either of two breeds of working dogs developed to handle cattle. They are similar in appearance but are of different origins. Their resemblance results from crosses between the two breeds. The Cardigan Welsh corgi (see photograph), named for Cardiganshire, can be traced back to dogs brought to Wales by the Celts about 1200 BC. The original type was known as the Bronant and was related to the progenitors of the dachshund. The Pembroke Welsh corgi (see photograph), of Pembrokeshire, is descended from dogs brought to Wales by Flemish weavers about AD 1100. The ancestors of the Pembroke belonged to the group that produced the Keeshond, Pomeranian, and Samoyed. The corgi gained exposure from its association with the royal family of Britain; Queen Elizabeth II has had corgis since her childhood.
