Honest Review of the 1966 Sauer & Sohn 12x70 Shotgun I recently had the opportunity to handle a Sauer & Sohn 12x70 shotgun from 1966, and I wanted to share my thoughts on this classic firearm. First and foremost, the craftsmanship is remarkable. Sauer & Sohn has a long-standing reputation for producing high-quality shotguns, and this model is no exception. The attention to detail in the engraving and woodwork showcases the company's dedication to their art. The walnut stock feels solid and well-balanced in the hands, giving a sense of connection to the firearm that newer models often lack. In terms of performance, the 12x70 gauge offers a versatile range for various shooting activities, whether it’s sport shooting or hunting. The shotgun cycles smoothly, and the recoil is manageable, making it comfortable to shoot even over prolonged periods. I was impressed with its accuracy - hitting targets felt intuitive, and the pattern was consistent. However, being a vintage piece, there ar

Canadian geese hunting is a popular and challenging pursuit for hunters across the United States. These migratory birds are known for their intelligence, adaptability, and strong social bonds, making them both a rewarding and demanding target. Here's an exploration of why accurate shooting is crucial in this type of hunting, how American hunters approach it, and what makes it so difficult. The Difficulty of Canadian Goose Hunting Despite its popularity, Canadian goose hunting is not easy. Several factors contribute to its difficulty: Intelligence and Adaptability Geese are highly observant and wary of potential threats. If they detect anything unusual—such as poorly placed decoys, inconsistent calling, or exposed hunters—they will flare away from the area. Experienced geese become even more difficult to deceive over time. Weather Conditions Weather plays a significant role in goose hunting success. Wind direction affects how geese approach decoys, while fog, rain, or snow can obscure

Zebra Hunting in Namibia: A Striped Trophy Worth Pursuing Namibia, a land of vast savannas and dramatic landscapes, offers a unique hunting experience. Among the diverse game species that roam this African nation, the zebra stands out as a strikingly beautiful and challenging trophy. Turkey Hunting the Evening Shift The afternoon can be one of your best chances to shoot a longbeard. Here's your playbook for success The afternoon doesn’t get much attention from hunters or turkeys. Birds hunker low in secluded places to while away the midday. Hunters take siestas to catch up on lost winks, or maybe work in the yard, around the house or at their job. But if your daylight and midmorning sessions didn’t work out, there’s another good time to invest additional hunting hours: the evening shift. Provided hunting in the afternoons is legal in your state (in some states, it isn’t), real hunting opportunities present themselves in the last two to three hours of daylight. Turkey activity increases significantly at this time. But the evening shift is a different kind of hunting. A turkey at day’s end is not the same bird it was at day’s beginning. You must understand those differences, hunt with them in mind, and put a new collection of turkey hunting tactics, techniques and tr

3 Top States for DIY Big Buck Hunters These three stops all have over-the-counter tags and great potential for shooting a trophy buck For a Do-It-Yourself hunter, nothing beats the simplicity of traveling to another state, buying a deer tag over the counter, and then going to the woods. There are plenty of places for us DIYers to hunt like that and probably get a shot at a deer, too. But not as many have strong trophy potential. A 2 1/2-year-old 8-pointer is cream of the crop for most public-land hunting in states like New York, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. If your personal standards are a bit higher than that — maybe you’re after 3 1/2-year and older bucks — you might be facing long odds in most OTC states, at least on public lands. But shooting a mature buck on public land is within the realm of possibility in a few places, for hardworking hunters. These three states — all with OTC tags —have proven that they can regularly produce mature deer, and have some good public hunting to bo

Animal welfare organisations speak out against German outdoor cat ban Cat owners in the German town of Walldorf have been ordered this week to keep their pets indoors until the end of August to protect a rare bird during its breeding season. The decree is designed to help save the crested lark, which makes its nest on the ground and is therefore easy prey for feline hunters. The bird’s population in Western Europe has declined sharply in recent decades. Although it is listed as a species of least concern in Europe by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). "Among other things, the survival of the species depends on every single chick," authorities in Walldorf said. The rule applies to all cats in the southern part of the town and will be repeated for the next three years from April to August. Owners risk a fine of €500 if their cat is found roaming outside and could be slapped with a penalty of up to €50,000 if their pet injures or kills a crested lark.
