End of year review: I've chosen this as my Wildlife Photo of the Year. It's a cheetah running into its new home provided by Trophy Hunters. Yes, beautifully managed trophy hunting by Zambezi Delta Safaris in 500,000 acre Hunting Block 11 has increased native wildlife to such high numbers that they were able to reintroduce cheetahs, a predator missing from the area for at least 100 years. Cabela's Family Foundation is a big part of this program. Four cheetah were released this day. I got this shot by running a GoPro 10 on video mode atop a small tripod while I operated a Canon R6 and 150-600mm Sigma. Lots of good video from both cameras, but this single frame pulled from the GoPro captured the essence of wildlife restoration advanced by and funded by dedicated sport/trophy hunters. Pheasant Stocking In PA HARRISBURG, PA -- Saying there is bad news and good news for the future of pheasant hunting, Pennsylvania Game Commission officials have announced that hunters still should expect to see the agency's pheasant stocking efforts increase to 200,000 birds for the 2012-12 license year. However, because of recent flooding impacts at two of the agency's game farms, hunters will notice a significant reduction in pheasant stockings this year. "Prior to the flooding from Tropical Storm Lee, Game Commission game farms were on track to have more than 104,000 ring-necked pheasants for release on public lands throughout the Commonwealth for the upcoming small game hunting seasons," said Carl G. My buddies and I had been on plenty of trips together before but never to Texas! Between the four of us and gear for six (two of our team opted to fly from New York to San Antonio), every single spare inch of space in the truck had been utilized. With each of us taking turns driving, we made it to Texas in about 20 hours. We got dinner and hotel rooms in Texarkana, and were back on the road early the next morning. With a day to spare before we were due at our hunting camp in Hondo, Texas, we headed south with plans to enjoy the city of San Antonio along the way. In San Antonio, we explored the Alamo, the River Walk and the Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum. What a great city! (AP) — Wisconsin wildlife officials say they won’t seek charges against a bow hunter who killed a cougar. The Department of Natural Resources said in a news release Wednesday that the bow hunter shot the animal in Buffalo County and self-reported the incident to the agency’s violation hotline on Nov. 11. The department said an investigation showed the bow hunter was hunting deer when the hunter encountered the cougar and shot it in self-defense. The department news release does not identify the hunter or the hunter’s gender. Cougar sightings in Wisconsin are rare but have been increasing over the last 20 years. Saskatchewan taking steps to control wild boars and feral pigs As wild boars continue to run rampant in Saskatchewan, the provincial government said it is taking steps to address the issue. The province said it will proactively enhance and broaden the regulation and control of wild boars and feral pigs. It will include adding the animals as regulated pests. The president of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities has been calling on the province to shut down the wild boar farms.
