This weekend my boyfriend took me out for my first deer hunt. I got put in a great spot and was pushed some nice does, took a shot and landed my first deer! At the end of the day we walked up to an open field, see if any where out eating. In that spot he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Had to make sure I could kill a deer first lolPost: 12 December 09:10
Saskatchewan taking steps to control wild boars and feral pigs Increasing feral pig surveillance and eradication efforts, along with declaring them a regulated pest, are proactive measures to help ensure the health of both the agriculture industry and the natural environment in Saskatchewan,” Agriculture Minister David Marit said in a release Wednesday. “These are substantial steps that improve risk management and protect the resilience and security of our agriculture industry, which is a critical component of our provincial economy.”Post: 17 September 20:27
Hats with horns are hats equipped with the horns of various animals, more often bison, or their imitation. They were distributed as military and ceremonies among the North American Indians in the Great Plains, Plateau and the Great Basin region. Like many other Indians, such hats were considered filled with magical and protective property or power. Honorary bison horns or similar structures made of wood or leather were sometimes supplied with hats in the form of feather crowns.Post: 20 July 17:22
A Night in Hippo Heaven By Donald J Stoner It is said that hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal (if you exclude mosquitos). But does that qualify them to be classified as dangerous game. I have certainly had my doubts until, that is, an experience I had one night in a farmer’s field. There is no question that an animal that weighs two tons, can run up to 20 mph and has huge teeth, has the potential of being dangerous. The danger is highest if you happen to catch a hippo on the land. Water is their preferred environment and they seem less threatened there. I don’t think any predator will attack a full-grown hippo in the water, although a big croc will certainly snatch a small hippo given half a chance. On the other hand, lion, especially a large pride, will attack a hippo if they catch it on land. This may have something to do with hippo temperament when they are away from water. Threaten a hippo on land, and it will head straight for the nearest water anPost: 15 December 09:24
New York Hunter Gets a Second Chance on This 180-Inch Buck “I was shaking so bad I missed him clean, sending my arrow three feet over his back” eremy Williams likes to hunt his family’s 500-acre parcel near the Susquehanna River in south-central New York. He goes down to the river often, and last summer he spotted a giant buck near the bank while catfishing. Williams watched where the deer bedded, and then came back to place trail cams in the area. By October, he’d learned the buck’s habits well enough to make his move. “He was only 20 yards away from me on Oct. 10,” Williams tells Outdoor Life. “But I was shaking so bad I missed him clean, sending my arrow three feet over his back.” Eager to redeem himself this season, Williams kept an eye on his trail cams and he kept getting photos of the buck. A few other hunters in the area had spotted the buck, too. But he wasn’t an easy deer to pattern. “I’d been bowhunting him on [our] family’s land in low, thick areas because I believed thPost: 4 December 09:38
DIY Moose Hunt in Icy Bay For the last three minutes, “Young Guns” has been on a beeline to my cow call. My loud calls, bolstered by the use of Wayne Kubat’s “Bull Magnet,” which is essentially a fiberglass megaphone that allows me to amplify both cow calls and bull grunts, has drawn in this big bull from far away. At first, far in the distance, I could hear the faint vocalizations of a bull drawn to a cow. The rhythmic “Ooh-Waa” sounds are repeated by the bull every few seconds. Finally, at about 400 yards across the swamp, I get a visual on the bull as he milled around. At first it appears that the bull is going to head off in another direction, but my persistent calling has him coming on a string. The topography of the location makes it so I won’t be able to get a shot until he comes clear of the brush that separates us, which will put him broadside at 20 yards. I experience a full adrenaline rush after so much communication with this bull, and have enough time to calm down my hearPost: 23 June 12:14
Find a Deadhead Buck? Keep it Legal To you thousands of COVID-19 newbies that have joined our ranks to hunt deer in the fall and shed antlers in the spring, here is something you’ll find interesting. A “deadhead” is the commonly used term for a buck deer carcass that you might stumble across in the woods, with antlers still attached to the skull. Generally, such a buck has been dead for several months or even a year or two, and the carcass has been ravaged by time, weather, and predators. All that might remain are a grisly skull with antlers, a portion of the spine, and maybe some rib bones wrapped tautly with pieces of hide as black as used motor oil. If the skull has been lying on the ground for more than a few months, you might see teeth marks on the antlers where squirrels and mice have gnawed them. Rodents are attracted to the minerals in antlers, and they also chew them to wear down their ever-growing teeth. The longer a deadhead rots on the ground, the more squirrels will carvePost: 9 June 09:24
The best ways to keep your pets cool this summer A lot of us are excited about the warmer temperatures, which means more time outside with our furry friends. Experts say to keep our pets safe from the heat, walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are cooler. Limit their time outside when it’s especially hot out and keep them hydrated. Never leave your dog inside the car, even if you have a quick trip inside a store. A car can heat up quickly in just a few minutes. We have shoes to protect our feet but our pets don’t have that option, so don’t walk them on the hot pavement which can badly burn their paws. Instead, walk in grassy areas. If they are overheated, cool them off underneath their armpits, chest, and ears. If they will drink water, give them lukewarm, not ice-cold water because you don’t want to shock their system and get them to a vet as soon as possible. If it’s just simply too hot for those walks, there are plenty of ways to givPost: 22 May 19:12

This follows a record-breaking cull of 722 bears last year. HOLY ELK! Look what we found at the Kilkenny Castle in Ireland. They are REAL antlers from a prehistoric Irish elk! AND (according to our guide) they are mounted on the wall at their actual height! They are the largest deer that ever lived, and went extinct between 8,000 and 6,000 years ago. They earned the name Irish elk because so many bodies were preserved in Irish peat bogs. These massive ungulates weighed between weighed 990-1,520 pounds and stood as tall as an Alaskan moose at 6 feet 11 inches at the shoulders! The size of their antlers was utterly staggering. In fact, that is very likely the cause of their extinction. Many agree that their huge antler size may have contributed to a mineral deficiency which ultimately killed the animal off. So at least it wasn’t humans! Post: 5 May 19:08
How predators get past the trickiest of defenses When a western banded gecko wants to eat a defenseless cricket or worm, it just gulps it down. “Pretty boring,” says Malachi Whitford, an ecologist at Clovis Community College, in California. But if the same gecko goes after more dangerous prey, such as a dune scorpion, it uses a different strategy: It contorts its body as if building up spring-like tension before lunging at the arachnid, Whitford says. Then, as soon as it bites down, the lizard begins thrashing around like a concertgoer in a mosh pit. “Watching it with the naked eye, it almost looks like the gecko has some sort of medical problem,” says Whitford, who led a study describing the new behavior in the Biological Journal of the Linnean Society. “It’s just so fast and so violent.”Post: 15 May 21:24
