DEET is a powerful insect repellent found in bug sprays used by millions of people in the U.S. every year. Most health incidents involving the chemical are minor, according to the EPA, such as skin, eye or respiratory irritation like rashes, watery eyes or wheezing. But still, there's widespread concern that DEET might be potentially toxic or cause cancer.Post: 29 August 22:49

Honest Review of the ATN HD MARS 4.5-18 Thermal Scope from a Hunter's Perspective As an avid hunter who has used the ATN HD MARS 4.5-18 thermal scope on multiple hunts, including deer, I can confidently say that this optic is a game-changer in many ways, but it’s not without its flaws. Here’s my detailed take on this thermal scope, based on real-world experience in the field. Pros: Exceptional Image Quality: The HD MARS 4.5-18 delivers crisp, clear thermal imaging, even in complete darkness or dense fog. The 1280x720 resolution is a standout feature, allowing me to spot deer and other game at impressive distances. The 4.5-18x magnification range is versatile, making it suitable for both close-range and long-range hunting. Durability and Build Quality: This scope is built like a tank. However, like any piece of equipment, it has its strengths and weaknesses. Here’s my detailed take on this gun after several outings in the field. Pros: Versatility: The combination of an 8.57x72R rifle barrel and two 12/76 shotgun barrels makes this gun incredibly versatile. Whether you're stalking deer in dense woods or flushing black grouse in open fields, the MG 92 adapts seamlessly. The ability to switch between rifle and shotgun modes without changing guns is a game-changer. Build Quality: Antonio Zoli is known for its craftsmanship, and the MG 92 is no exception. How the Grunt Call Came to Be Realtree pro staffer Brad Harris was grunting up whitetails long before deer calling was cool Brad Harris was high in a tree in Mingo Swamp in southeast Missouri when a 6-point buck walked by at about 80 yards. Harris doesn’t remember the exact year, but it was in the ’70s. He was working in the mines back in those days, and he was among several in a group who loved to bowhunt and spent about every free minute of a break talking about bows, arrows, broadheads, and whitetails. This was back in the day, Harris says, when top-of-the-line hunting equipment was a 45-pound Shakespeare recurve with cedar arrows, and just getting a deer — anything with legal antlers — was a huge accomplishment. One of those buddies at the mine had told Harris that his brother had been hunting and listened as a little buck, standing right under his tree, had made a curious grunting sound. The guy pinched his nose and re-created the grunt himself. Harris had never heard a whitetailPost: 15 June 18:13

This expansive area allows it to neighbour more countries than anywhere else on earth, as well as touch twenty-two bodies of water and hold twelve seas within its borders. Most of the country has a continental climate with distinct periods of warm and cold weather that increases as you travel east. Temperatures for Moscow and St. Petersburg range from highs of 32 C in the summer to lows of -25 C in the winter. 320 mammal species and about 730 bird species inhabit Russia. Hunting is allowed for about 60 mammal species and 70 bird species. Come and hunt Red Stag and Sika Deer (Axis) with us – you will bring home a great trophy and unforgettable memories. Deep Water Haunts Bass fishing this time of year often corresponds with deep water. In much of the country, bass move offshore and school up to chase open-water baitfish. Offshore structure and cover like river ledges, deep weed beds, rock piles, wing-dams, and deep boat docks can all be dissected with a drop-shot. It particularly excels as a clean-up hitter. Once you catch a few fish from an offshore hot-spot using traditional cranking and worm techniques, pitch a drop-shot in and see what bites. It will often surprise you. The key to this style of fishing is to get the boat near, or over your target. From there, let the bait down until it makes contact with the bottom, and begin a series of light shakes of the worm. You want the bait to move, but not the sinker. This sounds touchy, but it’s easy to get the hang of it. Most experienced drop-shot fishermen call this “shaking slack.” After a little practice, you’ll get the feel of allowing your bait to flutter and sink on a slack line,Post: 12 September 18:47
The Iowa bowhunter had concluded he wasn’t going to get an opportunity at the non-typical whitetail he’d watched chasing a doe the length of a nearby CRP field. Rather than wait those last few minutes, he decided to get down and walk to his car before more deer drifted into the stubble. The idea might have been sound, in theory, but the time he was willing to shave was almost his own 15 minutes of fame.Post: 4 October 18:09

PREDATOR HUNTING—HOW TO GET STARTED THE EASY WAY CLASSIC COYOTE SETUPS There are three basic types of coyote hunts: A silent stand in which you post up and hope to shoot coyotes passing by. A calling stand in which you hunker down and call coyotes into gun range; What I call a “run-and-gun hunt” in which you drive rural roads and stop periodically to call, then set up when you get a response. 1. SILENT STANDS Looking at the silent stand, your standard deer-season treestand or ground blind can work beautifully, especially if it is situated between deer feeding and bedding areas. Those are the same habitats that coyotes work, so as long as the wind is favorable—that is, blowing away from where you expect to see coyotes—then you should expect a shot. This silent-stand hunting is not a numbers game. You are relying on a dog to simply show itself, and if you shoot, or do anything to alert animals that you’re in the area, then you might be in for a long, slow day. But you can make goodPost: 12 December 17:50
New York Hunter Gets a Second Chance on This 180-Inch Buck “I was shaking so bad I missed him clean, sending my arrow three feet over his back” eremy Williams likes to hunt his family’s 500-acre parcel near the Susquehanna River in south-central New York. He goes down to the river often, and last summer he spotted a giant buck near the bank while catfishing. Williams watched where the deer bedded, and then came back to place trail cams in the area. By October, he’d learned the buck’s habits well enough to make his move. “He was only 20 yards away from me on Oct. 10,” Williams tells Outdoor Life. “But I was shaking so bad I missed him clean, sending my arrow three feet over his back.” Eager to redeem himself this season, Williams kept an eye on his trail cams and he kept getting photos of the buck. A few other hunters in the area had spotted the buck, too. But he wasn’t an easy deer to pattern. “I’d been bowhunting him on [our] family’s land in low, thick areas because I believed thPost: 4 December 09:38
The Right Way to Clean and Store Your Hunting Rifle Properly caring for your deer gun’s barrel and action ensures it’ll be ready to go again next fall Deer season is over, and now is the perfect time to give your rifle a thorough annual cleaning. Store your gun in a secure and rust-free environment and it will be in good working order when you break it out for a range session in a few months. Gun-Cleaning Gear To do the job right, you need to secure your rifle horizontally in a vise. A vise attached to a workbench at your house will work fine. Or you can purchase a portable gun vise from a company that specializes in firearms-cleaning accessories. Spend $40 or more for a universal gun-cleaning kit, which will include a three-piece bore rod and an assortment of jags, brushes, patches, and other accessories for cleaning not only your bolt-action, but also other handguns and long guns that you own. Also, and this is important, purchase a bore guide, which will protect the bore and actionPost: 28 June 19:29
Find a Deadhead Buck? Keep it Legal To you thousands of COVID-19 newbies that have joined our ranks to hunt deer in the fall and shed antlers in the spring, here is something you’ll find interesting. A “deadhead” is the commonly used term for a buck deer carcass that you might stumble across in the woods, with antlers still attached to the skull. Generally, such a buck has been dead for several months or even a year or two, and the carcass has been ravaged by time, weather, and predators. All that might remain are a grisly skull with antlers, a portion of the spine, and maybe some rib bones wrapped tautly with pieces of hide as black as used motor oil. If the skull has been lying on the ground for more than a few months, you might see teeth marks on the antlers where squirrels and mice have gnawed them. Rodents are attracted to the minerals in antlers, and they also chew them to wear down their ever-growing teeth. The longer a deadhead rots on the ground, the more squirrels will carvePost: 9 June 09:24

The gray wolf prefers to eat fleet ungulates—elk, deer—but when Europeans arrived in America with livestock its menu expanded. A wolf that cannot find its favored meal may turn to cattle and sheep. Livestock producers and big-game hunters have considered wolves an existential threat since Colonial days. In 1634, a tract called “New England’s Prospect,” by William Wood, described the animals as “the greatest inconveniency,” noting that there was “little hope of their utter destruction, the Countrey being so spacious, and they so numerous.” Post: 4 August 17:32

Early Season Hunting Conditions Depending on where you hunt and exactly when you’re in the field, early-season hunting can be brutal. For example, sitting in a ground blind near an antelope watering hole or putting the stalk on a Western muley can cause you to sweat like you were trying to earn a spot in the NFL combine. You’d think that sitting perched in a tree would offer some relief due to the wind, but that’s not always true either. Hot and humid conditions without any breeze can be just as tough 15 feet up. Traditional cotton shirts or blue jeans don’t work well in these situations because they don’t breathe well or wick your sweat away. As a result, your clothes just stay wet and eventually start to stink. Not ideal for hunting, especially if you’re on a multi-day trip out west. At the same time, some southern or western hunts may take you through some challenging terrain, where briars, thorns, and other vegetation tears at your hunting clothes. That means your lightweight huntPost: 30 June 16:09

Maine and Massachusetts could soon see bans lifted on Sunday hunting Some states are steadily chipping away at longstanding bans on Sunday hunting, and there's a push to overturn the laws in Maine and Massachusetts, the final two states with full bans. Maine’s highest court is considering a lawsuit asking whether the state's 19th century law, which prevents hunting big game animals such as deer, moose and turkeys on Sundays, is still necessary. In Massachusetts, where hunters are also lobbying for Sunday hunting rights, there is a renewed effort to change state laws forbidding the practice. Forty states have no prohibitions on hunting on Sundays.Post: 22 November 10:10

Cougar killed in Buffalo County, DNR says MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A cougar was killed in western Wisconsin Saturday, and the hunter involved claims it was in self-defense. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says an archery deer hunter found the cougar while hunting, and felt like they were in danger. The hunter then shot the cougar and self-reported the incident to the DNR. Cougars are a protected species in Wisconsin, so the DNR conducted an investigation. The agency says no charges will be filed against the hunter. The DNR is not certain if there is a cougar population in Wisconsin and says they may be migrating from the west.
