History of Christmas In ancient pagan times, the last day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere was celebrated as the night that the Great Mother Goddess gives birth to the baby Sun God. It is also called Yule, the day a huge log is added to a bonfire, around which everyone would dance and sing to awaken the sun from its long winter sleep. In Roman times, it became the celebrations honoring Saturnus (the harvest god) and Mithras (the ancient god of light), a form of sun worship that had come to Rome from Syria a century before with the cult of Sol Invictus. It announced that winter is not forever, that life continues, and an invitation to stay in good spirit. The first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere occurs between the 20th and 22nd of December. The Roman celebrated Saturnalia between 17 and 24 December. The early Christians To avoid persecution during the Roman pagan festival, early Christians decked their homes with Saturnalia holly. As Christian numbers increased and t

Hardware: Leupold RX-FullDraw 5 Rangefinder When it comes to glass, I’m a Leupold guy. I’ve come to trust the clarity and dependability of their optics, from scopes to binos to spotters, and they always perform brilliantly. Of course, rangefinders fall into the optic arena and are arguably one of the most crucial tools for firearm and archery hunters. Over the years, the rangefinder pocket on my bino harness has held multiple Leupold models like the RX-1600i TBR/W, RX-FullDraw 3 and RX-FullDraw 4. All performed as advertised, and I killed lots of critters using them. Leupold’s latest incarnation for archers, the RX-FullDraw 5, is the spitting image of the RX-4: compact, lightweight, durable, ergonomic and 6x magnification. The big difference, and one I was ready to dive headfirst into, is the new rangefinder’s Ballistic Mode. Before taking full advantage of the technology that makes this rangefinder one of the market’s most advanced and accurate bowhunting rangefinders, Leupold ask

Can you believe Christmas is just a week away? We all get stuck in a rut sometimes. Last night listening to our insanely talented friend Traci Sepkovic/@tlsepkovic, a guest on the @wildlifeconversationspodcast, she talked about just that. Sometimes we feel unlimited creativity and other times we just hit a wall and no matter how bad we want to be out with camera sometimes it's good just to set it down for a while, recenter and get back at it. Todays frames are some that lend to being way more creative than just always using the "good light". Yes we all love a perfectly subject from the the front or coming at us straight into the lens but the older I get and the more I shoot I would rather shoot into the light looking for the truly special moments. My wife and I love anytime we get with wildlife, even without camera in the harsh light parts of the day just being out together is what it's all about, but when the light hits just right it is truly incredible what this planet can create. I shot this button buck Saturday night while sitting at the base of a giant oak tree. Three does came out of the cedars earlier that evening, but they were about 155 yards away and moving at a pretty good clip. Then this young deer came out, and when he finally moved out from behind a couple trees in front of me, he stopped quartering toward me and gave me a shot at about 75 yards. I don’t prefer to hunt with a muzzleloader, but the December season seems to be about the only time I get the opportunity to hunt deer. The shot rang and after a moment of blindness, the smoke cleared. I saw the deer bolt about 50 yards to my right. I thought I’d missed him, but as he approached a couple lone cedar trees in the open, he made a sharp, confused U-turn, and then crashed down into the dry creek bed to the north. I almost expected him to get up and continue running over the hill, or slip away down the dry bed. Trembling, I reloaded my gun. If he was there, I needed to give him time to die with

The Cape Buffalo is considered by some to be the most dangerous of all of the Big Five. While he seems docile enough when viewed undisturbed in the herd, when agitated or wounded this bovine can be extremely aggressive, vindictive, and cunning. Found all over southern Africa in herds of various sizes, the buffalo can weigh up to 1800 pounds. He is primarily a grazer but an occasional browser who must drink every day. They favor the thick bushveld during the day, leisurely moving and grazing as they go. At night they tend to herd up to protect the young from their archenemy, the lion. Both sexes carry horns, however, the horns of a bull can be quite spectacular in spread, with a deep curl and a solid boss covering the forehead. Cows lack the boss, but can have a very wide spread; in fact, the world record buffalo on file in the Roland Ward record book is a cow with a spread of some 62 inches. With a well-placed shot, a rifle of .375 caliber is adequate for the Cape buffalo. However, a

Hunting stories 3 years in the making: A bowhunt for bull elk. By WYATT O'DAY My love of bowhunting started around the age of four when my father gave me my first bow. Every night, I would go outside and shoot with him. As a kid I dreamed of the hunt and when I would finally kill my first bull elk with a bow. By the age of six, my father started taking me elk hunting with him. I watched him hunt as he called in and killed multiple bulls in front of me. Then, finally it was here — the year that I had been waiting for so long had come: the year that I was old enough to hunt! At 12 years old, I had several encounters with bulls, but was never presented a clear shot. The second year, I had a total of six nocked arrow encounters with bulls, but still no shot. Finally, the third year rolled around and at 14 years old, I was more than ready for my first bull. Day one of opening weekend On the first morning, my dad and I went to a spot that he has hunted a lot over the years and had succes

Tasmanian Highlands Hunting Calendar: When the Alpine Wilderness Calls - Fallow Deer, Wallaby and Mountain Pursuits Hunting Regulations & Seasonal Framework in The Tasmanian Highlands The Tasmanian Highlands operate under the state's strict Wildlife Regulations with distinct seasons for game species - fallow deer hunting runs from March to August, while Bennett's wallaby and feral rabbit seasons extend year-round. Waterfowl hunting is prohibited statewide, reflecting Tasmania's unique conservation priorities. The region's cool temperate climate creates compressed hunting windows - heavy snow often blocks high country access June-September, while summer brings park visitor restrictions. Unlike mainland alpine regions, Tasmania maintains absolute prohibitions on all hunting within its World Heritage Areas, covering 40% of the highlands. Recent reforms include mandatory GPS collar returns from harvested deer (2023) and real-time online access maps showing snow closures and fire danger r

High Country Hunting Calendar: Mastering Alpine Seasons for Sambar, Deer and Mountain Game Hunting Regulations & Seasonal Framework in the High Country The Australian High Country operates under strict state-based regulations with Victoria and NSW managing respective alpine zones. Sambar deer hunting runs year-round in both states as an invasive species control measure, while fallow deer seasons typically span March-October. Duck seasons follow state protocols (March-June in Victoria, variable in NSW). The alpine environment creates compressed hunting windows - heavy snow blocks access June-September, while summer brings park visitor restrictions. Unlike lowland regions, the High Country's vertical terrain means game concentrations vary dramatically by elevation. Recent reforms include mandatory GPS collar returns from harvested deer in Victorian Alpine National Park control zones and real-time online fire danger maps affecting access.
