Group two of this year’s trainees started their overnight hunt on Saturday morning. After hiking to their campsite with the aid of the club gps units, it was time for a quick target validation sighting session. Next it was time to hit the hills. It was a slow start with the animals all bedded down and refusing to break cover. Eventually an animal presented a shot while being tucked away in the bush. By the end of the weekend, which went late into Sunday arvo, all of group two had an animal packed into their vehicles. Once again the trainees all learnt heaps and left for home with big smiles all round. The instructors for group two were Ron, Neil, Steve and Hamish, and thanks again to Muddy Waters Hunting NZ and Hamish Luce for being our host.Post: 28 March 17:56

Tere, jahisõbrad! Täna tahaksin rääkida teile midagi, mis on Eestis väga populaarne ja põnev tegevus – nimelt ohtujahist. Ohtujahi traditsioon on sügaval meie kultuuris ja see on osa meie pärandist. Ohtujahil osalemine võib olla ainulaadne kogemus. See ei ole lihtsalt spordiala, vaid midagi palju enamat. See on seiklus, ühendus loodusega ja üksteisega.
End of year review: I've chosen this as my Wildlife Photo of the Year. It's a cheetah running into its new home provided by Trophy Hunters. Yes, beautifully managed trophy hunting by Zambezi Delta Safaris in 500,000 acre Hunting Block 11 has increased native wildlife to such high numbers that they were able to reintroduce cheetahs, a predator missing from the area for at least 100 years. Cabela's Family Foundation is a big part of this program. Four cheetah were released this day. I got this shot by running a GoPro 10 on video mode atop a small tripod while I operated a Canon R6 and 150-600mm Sigma. Lots of good video from both cameras, but this single frame pulled from the GoPro captured the essence of wildlife restoration advanced by and funded by dedicated sport/trophy hunters. Huge Zimbabwe Elephant Killed Legally, Says Wildlife Authority Harare: The hunt that killed one of the biggest elephants seen for years in Zimbabwe was legal, the wildlife authority said today. The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) said the elephant which was killed last week in the southeastern part of the country had tusks weighing 54 and 55 kilogrammes respectively adding that proceeds from the hunt would go towards wildlife conservation. "On the 7th of October 2015, an adult male elephant was hunted as a trophy by a foreign client through a locally registered safari company in Malipati Safari area," the ZimParks statement said. It said the area was "allocated sustainable quotas and hunting permits for all wildlife species including elephants on annual basis." Malipati is adjacent to Gonarezhou national park and the two game parks hold 11,452 elephants, ZimParks said, dismissing reports that the elephant hunt took place inside the national park. Austrian regions allow controversial wolf hunting Vienna (AFP) – Several regions of Austria have allowed the controversial killing of wolves after reporting an increase in livestock attacks, sparking debate in the Alpine EU member. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) says the orders to kill the wolves violate European law, which lists them as protected animals. In the southern province of Carinthia, five wolves have been killed so far this year under legislation introduced in January. The killing of eight more has been authorised, according to authorities. Neighbouring Tyrol, known for cattle grazing freely on mountain pastures, has authorised the killing of six wolves -- yet to be carried out -- under a decree from February, according to province spokesman Maximilian Brandhuber. "Time and again wolves are sighted near settlements and kill livestock," he told AFP this week, adding that evidence of their presence has "risen sharply since 2019." New rule gives Colorado authority over gray wolf management With Colorado’s gray wolf reintroduction deadline looming, the state just received some good news regarding gray wolf management. This week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) finalized a rule, 10j, that will allow the state to create its own rules for what’s considered a “nonessential experimental population,” according to Channel 9 News. This is a big step for the reintroduction effort in a measure that was approved by voters back in 2020, which requires Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) to reintroduce wolves to the state by Dec. 31, 2023. CPW announced on Twitter/X that “10j gives us gray wolf management flexibility,” which includes determining when it will be permissible to kill a problem wolf. 10j was supported by local ranchers who, per the state’s management plan, will be allowed to kill wolves if they catch one “actively trying to kill livestock,” according to Channel 9 News. Skylarks, starlings and mistle thrushes: Endangered songbirds licensed to be killed for sport in UK Skylarks, starlings and mistle thrushes are among the red-listed species approved to be hunted by falconers. Should endangered wild birds be hunted for sport? It sounds like an odd question to be asking in 2023, in the midst of a biodiversity crisis. Yet, at a time when many avian species in the UK are under threat of regional extinction, government data reveals falconers are permitted to hunt rare songbirds. The data, released this week by government watchdog Natural England, has caused concern among environmentalists. What is falconry and how is it regulated in the UK? Falconry involves hunting wild animals in their natural habitat using a trained bird of prey. There are reportedly around 25,000 falconers in the UK. The sport itself dates back hundreds of years, and it has seen a resurgence in recent times. While it remains legal throughout Britain, many outside the hobby are uPost: 17 November 18:01

Looking back on a fantastic week in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. I treasure every trip I get to make to the GYE. This image was captured February of 2022. After listening to multiple groups of howls, we decided to position ourselves in between them in hopes we could catch a glimpse. After only 5hrs of being in the general area our patients paid off. To my surprise a beautiful young gray wolf appeared on the ridge above. With another pack across the river communicating with her I knew we were in for a treat. She boldly made her way down the ridge and towards us. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. I snapped what would be my favorite wolf shots to date. This experience brings me back year after year. The GYE is truly like no where else on earth! Canon R5 Canon RF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM Post: 10 March 20:37
Montana judge to issue decision on wolf hunting and trapping Montana hunters and trappers await a decision that should come sometime this week as a temporary restraining order that immediately changed the state’s wolf season expires today. District Court Judge Chris Abbot issued the restraining order earlier this month that applied to Lewis and Clark counties. The order suspended the state’s regulations, which allowed for expanded wolf hunting and trapping. On Monday, Abbott heard testimony regarding the issue. He said he would decide today whether the temporary limits placed on wolf hunting should continue or if the quotas and hunting methods “pending a trial over changes in the way the state estimates the size of the wolf population” to inform hunting quotas should continue, according to the Associated Press. In October, WildEarth Guardians and Project Coyote filed a lawsuit, alleging that Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (Montana FWP) and the Montana Fish and Wildlife CommissioPost: 30 November 16:49
Less Lethal Wolf Ammo? Roughly 30 local ranchers gathered at the fairgrounds in Carey, Idaho, last week to talk wolves. But this was far from the typical wolf discussion. The workshop, possibly the first of many hosted by Defenders of Wildlife, took an unusual and widely unacknowledged tack: Don't shoot the predator, protect the prey. The morning served as a crash course in a host of non-lethal deterrents to wolf predation, from guard dogs to grazing rotations. It also marked the first attempt by Defenders to share with the public lessons learned over the past three years by the Wood River Wolf Project. Defenders of Wildlife spokeswoman Suzanne Stone says the project has field-tested numerous tools for decreasing livestock losses to predators, an approach that replaces the habit of killing problem animals with the concept of coexistence. "If you do nothing and kind of rely on the traditional lethal control methods routinely used by [U.S. Department of Agriculture] Wildlife Services fPost: 8 July 19:07
Pennsylvania Will Finally Allow Limited Sunday Deer Hunting. Pennsylvania deer hunters have reason to celebrate after lawmakers have done away with a “blue law,” which prohibited hunting on Sundays in the Keystone State for more than 100 years. Gov. Tom Wolf is expected to sign the law, which will allow hunters to hunt one Sunday during rifle season, one Sunday during archery season, and one Sunday to be determined by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The law also requires hunters to have written permission to hunt private land on Sunday (oral permission is fine on the other six days of the week.) Of course, it’s still up to private landowners to decide whether to allow hunting on their property. Sunday deer hunting has been illegal in Pennsylvania since the 1800s, although there are exceptions for coyotes, foxes, crows and non-commercial game preserves. Blue laws date back to a time when lawmakers thought it was appropriate to encourage people to attend church on Sunday instead ofPost: 27 September 20:08
SOUTH DAKOTA RANCHERS UPSET OVER NUMBER OF ELK CONTINGENCY LICENSES South Dakota ranchers are angry over the number of elk contingency licenses recently issued across four units, especially because they were involved in the creation of the new elk management plan in 2015. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (SDGFP) announced this week that there would be 20 of these licenses in units that span both public and private property, the Black Hills Pioneer reports. The elk contingency licenses are used to “reduce the elk population in areas that have been heavily affected by drought,” said Andrew Norton, SDGFP senior big game biologist. There is not set location for where these licenses are issued. Basically, it’s based upon where the elk are “relative to the department’s objective” so that the elk population can be reduced “in order to improve grazing conditions on forest service land that ranchers lease.” Yet, Aaron Thompson, president of the Spearfish Livestock Association, Eric JenningPost: 17 September 18:08

We recommend you the most exciting hunt for 🐔partridge in Spain. 👏 Everyone will be able to shoot a lot and qualitatively, have fun with friends, relax - thereby getting an emotional charge for a long time! Traditionally in 🇪🇸 Spain, a hunt is carried out by driving. The beaters flush the partridges at some distance from the hunters and direct them to the line of shooters. Every day, 4-5 drives are organized with a break for lunch.
