Picking the Best Rifle and Caliber for Pig Hunting Do you need a magnum setup or a fast-shooting semi-auto? Probably, your deer rifle will work just fine Pig Reality There’s a reason gun nuts love pig hunting. In southern states like Texas and Florida, hogs aren’t subject to many game laws, which means you can hunt them with about whatever you please. If you have a magnum rifle that never sees the light of day because, after buying it, you realized cracked clavicles are no fun at all, you can use it on pigs. In fact, some of the advice out there suggests that you need a really big gun for hog hunting, because you never know when a true Hogzilla might make an appearance. On the other hand, plenty of would-be hog hunters show up with high-capacity semi-autos and visions of a mag dump against a marauding horde of pork. Those rifles are fun to shoot and plenty accurate enough, but unless you’re shooting from a helicopter, they rarely give you much of an advantage while pig hunting. Tru

3 EASY WAYS TO MAKE ANY WILD HOG DELICIOUS A lot of folks get nervous when you start throwing wild pig into the dinner table conversation. Log onto any hunting forum and the majority of people will say they don’t bother eating hogs for any number of reasons—smell, taste, unfounded rumors, you name it. It’s simply the majority mindset, or at least it was. Where I live in Texas, we’re inundated with these feral critters, but there’s a love/hate relationship at play. I hate that they destroy our hay fields, but I love cooking these beasts and do so on a regular basis. Like me, Jesse Griffiths thinks the pig detractors are ill-informed if not crazy, so much so that he wrote a book dedicated to cooking wild hogs. As the owner of the renowned Dai Due in Austin, as well as the mind behind The New School of Traditional Cookery, he’s been waving the banner for wild hogs since before it was fashionable. And people are beginning to catch on. Regardless, there still are some mental and actual ob

5 Best States for Pig Hunting Looking to hit the road for a hog hunt? These five stops are prime for swine Feral hogs are one of the country’s great ecological disasters. Few pests are more difficult to control, or more immediately detrimental to native ecosystems. In fact, some biologists consider hogs to be the most destructive invasive species on the planet. Though their spread across the United States has been slowed a bit over the past few years, thanks to smart regulations and trapping measures, wild pigs are nonetheless here to stay in many parts of the country. Unfortunately, new pig populations most often arise because people intentionally relocate them in hopes of hunting them. That’s why states without existing pig problems have actually taken to outlawing pig hunting — much to the consternation of local hunters who can’t understand how not shooting pigs is actually the best way to control them. But the reality is, pigs breed too fast, and are too intelligent, to control th

Hog Hunting with My Trusty CZ Carbine There’s something about stepping into the woods after sunset that gets the blood pumping. Down here in the South, night hunts for wild hogs aren’t just tradition - they’re necessity. These feral beasts tear up crops, damage land, and challenge even the most seasoned outdoorsman. So tonight, just like many before, I headed out under the stars with my faithful hunting partner - my CZ carbine. 🐗 Tracking the Night Menace Wild hogs are no joke. Fast, smart, and aggressive, they test your skill every step of the way. But with the CZ tucked against my shoulder, I feel ready for whatever comes charging through the brush. There’s a reason I swear by this rifle: it’s balanced, reliable, and built for precision. That’s exactly what you need when you’re lining up a shot in pitch black with just a thermal scope for company. 🌾 The Setup Whether it’s the thick pinewoods of Georgia, the mesquite scrub in Texas, or the dense swamps of Florida—every state’s

Helicopter Hog Hunting in Texas: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Adventure In the heart of Texas, where the horizon stretches endlessly and the land is as wild as the game that roams it, a new breed of hunting experience is taking flight—literally. Helicopter hog hunting has become one of the most thrilling and effective ways to combat one of America’s most destructive invasive species: the feral hog. Recently, French huntress and outdoor influencer @johannaclermont took to the skies with @chasseautexas_com, capturing the essence of this adrenaline-fueled adventure. Her words say it all: “Just like in France, wild boars wreak havoc on farmland, but in the United States, the scale is staggering: over $2.5 billion in damage each year. In a country this vast, managing their population sometimes means taking to the skies.” 🐗 The Wild Boar Crisis in the U.S. Feral hogs—also known as wild boars—are not just a nuisance; they’re a national problem. With an estimated population exceeding 6 million, t

Review of the Browning Auto-5 12 Gauge, 1930 The Browning Auto-5, first introduced in 1900, has carved a significant niche in the world of shotguns. The model from 1930, in particular, stands out due to its innovative design and impressive performance. With a semi-choke barrel measuring 710 mm and a chamber length of 65 mm, this shotgun exemplifies the craftsmanship and engineering that Browning is known for. Review of the Khan Arms Venator 12 ga: A Turkish Semi-Auto Worth Considering (But With Caveats) I've had the Khan Arms Venator in 12 gauge with the 760mm (30") barrel and the extra 610mm (24") rifled slug barrel for a couple of seasons now. Like many, I was drawn to it because it offered a lot of features for the price – a Turkish-made semi-auto, two barrels for versatility (bird shot and slugs), and a decent capacity of 5+1. Let's break it down: The Good Stuff Khan Arms Venator: Value for Money: This is the big one. You get a semi-auto action, two barrels, and a set of chokes for significantly less than a Beretta or Benelli. If you're on a budget and want a versatile shotgun, the Venator is definitely in the conversation. Versatility: The two-barrel setup is fantastic. The 30" barrel with chokes is great for upland birds, waterfowl, and even some clays. The 24" rifled slug barrel turns it into a capable deer gun. Being able to switch between them quickly is a real plus. Reliable

Review of the BURRIS 4-16x50 Scope with Rangefinder and Auto Ballistic Features As an avid firearms enthusiast, I’ve had the opportunity to test a variety of optics over the years, and I recently gave the BURRIS 4-16x50 scope with built-in rangefinder and auto ballistics a solid run during my range sessions. Here’s my honest take on this optic, highlighting both its strengths and areas for improvement. Pros: Optical Clarity: One of the standout features of the BURRIS 4-16x50 is its clarity and brightness. The 50mm objective lens does an excellent job of gathering light, providing superb visibility even during low-light conditions. I was particularly impressed with how well it performed at dusk. Built-in Rangefinder: The integrated rangefinder is a game changer. I found it to be intuitive and relatively quick in calculating distances. This is incredibly useful for hunters who need to make split-second decisions based on range. No more fumbling with handheld devices! Auto Ballistic

Browning Auto-5 (A-5) Shotgun Review: System, Modifications, Calibers, Price, Facts. The Browning Auto-5, often referred to as the A-5, is more than just a shotgun — it’s a piece of firearms history. Designed by the legendary John Moses Browning in 1898 and patented in 1900, the Auto-5 was the first successful semi-automatic shotgun ever produced. With over 2.7 million units manufactured across Belgium, the United States, and Japan, this firearm has earned its place as a favorite among hunters, trap shooters, and collectors alike. 🔧 Design & Operating System A5 The Browning Auto-5 uses a long-recoil operated system, a mechanism where the barrel and bolt recoil together after firing, then separate to eject the spent shell and chamber the next round. This system was revolutionary at the time and remains one of the most reliable semi-auto shotgun actions ever developed. • Action Type: Semi-automatic, long-recoil • Feed System: Tubular magazine (4+1 capacity) • Safety: Crossbolt or tr

Hunting in Kabale: Geography and Natural Features, Hunting Demographics, and Game Species Diversity The first light in Kabale doesn't so much rise as it seeps through the mountain mists, slowly revealing a landscape that looks more like the Scottish Highlands than equatorial Africa. Somewhere in those damp hills, a bushbuck barks its alarm call—a sound that carries for miles in the crisp mountain air. This is hunting at elevation, where every step feels heavier, every shot more calculated, and the rewards are trophies forged in the crucible of altitude. Night hunting presents unique challenges. We discuss the challenges as well as the opportunities available with new technology. As discussed in previous Hogman Outdoors blogs, night hunting presents a unique set of challenges. Nocturnal animals are nocturnal for a very simple reason - they prefer, and in often cases are uniquely adept at, hunting, roaming and prowling at night. In the case of cats and coyotes, their eyes have an increased number of rods, as opposed to cones. Rods increase the ability to intake minimal ambient light and see as they do in full daylight; these animals in effect have their own unique "night vision", allowing them to be very effective at night hunting. It is often times population expansion/presence of human activity that drives these animals to nocturnal behavior. Hogs, on the other hand, are nocturnal for an entirely different reason, they prefer to avoid the heat and UV rays of the sun. While active during the day in the winter months, they w

Beretta AL391 Urika 2 (12 Gauge) - A Hunter's review I've owned and hunted with a Beretta AL391 Urika 2 for a good number of years now. It was my go-to semi-auto for everything from waterfowl to upland birds, and even the occasional sporting clays outing. I've put it through its paces in all sorts of conditions – rain, snow, heat, dust – and have a pretty solid understanding of its strengths and weaknesses. The Good Stuff Beretta AL391 Urika 2 12-gauge: Shooting Comfort: This is where the Urika 2 truly shines. The gas-operated system does a fantastic job of soaking up recoil. Even with heavier magnum loads, it's surprisingly manageable, which translates to less fatigue during long days in the field and faster follow-up shots. Compared to inertia-driven guns, it's noticeably softer on the shoulder. Reliability (Mostly): When clean and properly maintained, the Urika 2 is generally reliable. It'll cycle a wide range of loads, from light target rounds to heavier hunting loads, without

Hunting dog survives 50-foot fall into well, rescued by Texas game wardens Maria, a bird dog, was chasing an injured quail when she went missing. Texas game wardens had to get a bit creative while rescuing a hunting dog name Maria who found herself lost at the bottom of a well in South Texas during a recent hunting trip. According to the game wardens blotter, during the course of the quail hunt on a property in Jim Hogg County, Maria had chased an injured bird through a thicket and didn't return, which worried her owners. They began an immediate search and eventually found her trapped about 50 feet down at the bottom of a well on the property. Game wardens in Jim Hogg County, typically tasked with enforcing the state's hunting and wildlife laws, were quick to arrive and used a makeshift pulley system to lower a kennel to the bottom. Inside the kennel, they placed hunted quail to entice Maria inside, wardens said. After some time, the pup eventually moved into the crate. Maria wa

25 Tips for Dove Hunters 1. Pick the Right Gun Dove hunting is supposed to be fun, and if you enjoy shooting family heirlooms or featherlight .410s at doves, who am I to tell you not to? But if your idea of fun is hitting more doves, choose a 12- or 20-gauge with some heft and at least a 28-inch barrel. A longer, heavier gun swings smoothly, points surely and soaks up recoil. The best dove shooting I did this past year was with a 12-gauge sporting clays gun. 2. Stock Up On Shells Ammunition is available again, and there’s no reason to run out opening day, which I have actually done. Begging shells from people in the field is just embarrassing. Field or target loads of Nos. 7½ or 8 lead or 6 or 7 steel work. Steel loads kill fine, by the way. Lighter loads, with less shot and lower velocities, kick a lot less than heavy, high-speed stuff, and you will shoot a lot in no more padding than a T-shirt. Be sure your ammo will cycle your semi-auto, but other than that, lighter is better. 3.

Picking the Best Rifle and Caliber for Pig Hunting Do you need a magnum setup or a fast-shooting semi-auto? Probably, your deer rifle will work just fine Large wild pigs can move with a grace and silence that’s starkly at odds with their appearance. The boar that emerged from the thicket next to us did it without a sound, and he was comically large. My 7-year-old son, Anse, spotted him, and by the time he said something and I looked up, the pig was walking straight away from our box stand, headed to the feeder 60 yards away. “Look at the size of the nuts on that thing!” Anse whispered. Indeed, it appeared as if the pig was toting a pair of darkened, medium-sized cantaloupes. As the boar settled on the bait, I helped Anse steady his rifle, a bolt-action .300 Blackout, in the window frame of the box blind. It was early, maybe 4 p.m., when we snuck into the blind, and the Central Texas sun was still hot. I’d barely closed the bolt on the little rifle when a mix of 25 pigs—sows and shoat

Buck Holes Search for what I call buck holes, which are tangles of honeysuckle or wild rose on ridges, cedar or pine thickets, brushy beaver swamps … you get the idea. A buck hole doesn’t have to be large or even remote — just a thick spot other hunters overlook. A grassy ditch near a back road, an overgrown hog lot behind an old barn or a similar neglected spot can hide a big buck. Scour an aerial map for such pockets or strips of cover. Check the edges of a thicket or swamp for trails pocked with big tracks. Look for rubs and late scrapes, which are signs that a buck has moved back in there to evade hunters and breed a last willing doe. When you find a mother lode of fresh sign, stop right there. You don’t want to bust into a small security area, put more heat on already wired deer and bust them out of there. It’s better to back off 100 yards or so and set up on a ridge or point where you can cover buck entry and exit routes into and out of cover.
