Heavy bodied and long-legged, with a drooping nose, moose (Alces alces) are the largest members of the deer family. They range in color from golden brown to almost black, depending upon the season and the age of the animal. Full-grown males (bulls) stand almost 6 ft (1.8 m) tall at the shoulder, and males in prime condition weigh from 1,200 to 1,600 lbs (542 –725 kg). Adult females are somewhat smaller and weigh 800 to 1,300 lbs (364 – 591 kg). A 1,600-lb (726-kg) moose will dress out at about 950 lbs (431 kg), yielding approximately 500 lbs (227 kg) of meat. Alaskans and nonresidents annually harvest 6,000 to 8,000 moose, which translates into about 3.5 million pounds of usable meat. Only bull moose have antlers. The largest moose antlers in North America come from Alaska, the Yukon Territory, and the Northwest Territories of Canada. Trophy class bulls are found throughout Alaska, but the largest come from the western portion of the state. Moose occasionally produce trophy-size antle

“Ever since I was a kid, an Alaskan moose hunt has been at the top of my list. And, this season, it was finally here. We were dropped deep into in the Brooks Range and quickly found ourselves chasing rutting bulls through the tundra swamps, tussocks, and ridge lines. After about a week and a handful of incredible encounters, we were hit with a days-long September snow storm. The sudden weather shift also called for a change in our tactics; we began to hunt bull moose more like a Midwest whitetail. Setting up along an obvious trail—that move proved to be the best decision we made on the entire trip. As we waited to fly the meat out, we glassed up a large grizzly—a bonus opportunity after an already successful hunt. We put a plan for a stalk in place and with luck still on our side, it all came together. There are no words to describe a hunt like this other than, once-in-a-lifetime.” - Mathews own’ Jeff Ozanne #MathewsLIFTX #mathews

Bowhunter injured by angry moose You don’t want an angry moose after you – especially if it knows you tried to kill it. Rescuers responded to a distress alert from a bowhunter’s GPS in Larimer County, Colorado on Tuesday after the hunter attempted to shoot a moose with an arrow. However, when he missed, the moose “charged and then gored” the man in a remote area off Long Draw Road and Highway 14 in the Poudre Canyon, according to Channel 9 News. The response time was “escalated” once officials learned that the hunter likely had “serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.” “Deputies located the hunter, who had hiked part of the way out of the campground by other hunters,” said Larimer County Sheriff’s office (LCSO) spokesperson Jenevieve Kramer. The first deputy was able to provide first aid and place a tourniquet on the injured man’s arm while keeping him comfortable as they waited for Poudre Canyon Fire Protection District paramedics. Over 300 miles of fencing removed to benefit Nevada antelope For the past decade, volunteers have worked to remove one of the major impediments facing antelope along the western landscape: barbed-wire fencing. And, in the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, over 300 miles of fence has been removed, resulting in about 1,000 square miles of fence-free habitat for the roughly 2,000 antelope in northern Nevada, according to the Nevada Independent. The refuge was established in 1931 with the purchase of over 34,000 acres of the Last Chance Ranch by the Audubon Society and Boone & Crockett Club. Five years later, another 540,000 adjacent acres were combined with the initial 34,000, creating the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, which provides key habitat for antelope. Antelope are considered important indicators of ecosystem health due to their “migratory habits and far-reaching range,” according to the Nevada Independent. Prior to the 1800s, there were an estimated 40 million throughout Nor

Will Brantley and Mike Hanback talk long-range glassing, big bucks in Indiana, and pre-season plans in the Realtree Outpost podcast It's late August and still hot, but there's hope in the air, too. Kentucky's squirrel season opened this past weekend, and Tennessee's early three-day "velvet" archery season opened today. With luck, I'll be in a treestand this weekend. We're right on the eve of one of the best times of year, and there's no better time to debut Season 3 of Realtree's Outpost Podcast. This week, I joined fellow blogger and Big Deer TV host Mike Hanback to discuss a variety of pre-season topics. We covered long-range glassing tactics (as detailed here), and discussed why they're still so effective, especially in the early season, and even more so than trail cameras. We discussed plans for this fall, strategies for hunting the drought-stricken West, and personal goals for another season. Then we shifted gears to talk about Josh Honeycutt's recent (and fascinating) story on

How to Make Moose Jerky Moose jerky is delicious, nutritious and easy to make. The basic concept in my recipe is to take a quality cut of moose, slice it thin, marinate it for four hours and then remove the moisture from the meat in a dehydrator for four- to six hours at 155℉. Here’s how I make moose jerky: Ingredients 3 pound lean moose roast or steak 2/3 cup Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup soy sauce 2 tbsp honey 2 tsp ground black pepper 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes 1 tsp onion powder Step 1 Using a meat slicer—I use a Weston Pro 320 10” Meat Slicer—cut your moose into 1/8-inch slices. I like using lean steaks and roasts from the rear quarter. Flank steak is another popular option. I’ve tried backstrap, but didn’t like it as well due to the fat marbling in the meat. Frozen, slightly thawed meat works best for slicing in a meat slicer. Step 2 In a medium bowl, mix all the ingredients (except the moose) until blended. I use a whisk to integrate the honey into the liquid. Pour the mix
