Pheasants Forever - In 1982, a group of pheasant hunters saw the connection between upland habitat loss and declining pheasant populations. An organization dedicated to wildlife habitat conservation was needed, and Pheasants Forever was formed. Then in 2005, as quail numbers continued to decline nationwide, passionate conservationists across the country stepped up once again to found Quail Forever. Together, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s mission work quickly garnered it a reputation as “The Habitat Organization,” a tagline the nonprofit conservation group uses proudly to this day. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s mission is to conserve pheasants, quail, and other wildlife through habitat improvements, public access, education and conservation advocacy. Pheasant Stocking In PA HARRISBURG, PA -- Saying there is bad news and good news for the future of pheasant hunting, Pennsylvania Game Commission officials have announced that hunters still should expect to see the agency's pheasant stocking efforts increase to 200,000 birds for the 2012-12 license year. However, because of recent flooding impacts at two of the agency's game farms, hunters will notice a significant reduction in pheasant stockings this year. "Prior to the flooding from Tropical Storm Lee, Game Commission game farms were on track to have more than 104,000 ring-necked pheasants for release on public lands throughout the Commonwealth for the upcoming small game hunting seasons," said Carl G. Roe, agency executive director. "Unfortunately, flood waters that wrecked havoc for tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians also destroyed pheasant holding fields at the Loyalsock and Northcentral game farms in Lycoming County. "Initial reports showed about 40,000 birds either perished iPost: 14 July 10:42
Pheasant shoots scaled back across UK after bird flu import bans Pheasant shoots across the UK are being shut down or dramatically scaled back this year because of import bans on the birds after an outbreak of bird flu. A huge number of the gamebirds shot in the country are imported from factory farms in Europe. Experts have said this practice should stop or be reduced because it risks spreading disease and has troubling implications for native nature and biodiversity. Just under 50 million pheasants are usually released each year from continental farms. A recent study suggested that at their peak in August each year, non-native common pheasants and red-legged partridges make up about half of all wild bird biomass in Britain. The annual shooting season begins on 1 October. Jeff Knott, the central and eastern England director at the RSPB, said: “The most important thing from our perspective is the bird flu situation underlines the risks of importing and releasing millions of birds iPost: 12 July 18:26

Hunting with Hawks Perhaps you'll never try falconry yourself. Katherine Browne once thought the same thing. But these days, the Prois pro-staff coordinator and licensed falconer does her small-game hunting with a raptor named Hades Katherine Browne’s hunting partner, Hades, can be a little high strung and aggressive at times, but Browne overlooks it. Hades is pretty good at what he does, and that behavior is typical for his kind. A northern goshawk, Hades is a member of the raptor family, and his natural maneuverability and speed make him a top predator and excellent hunting companion. When Browne, the dealer relations and pro-staff coordinator for Prois Hunting Apparel, is not working, you can often find the licensed falconer training Hades to hunt ducks, pheasant, grouse and quail in the woods and fields by her home. Where to find pheasants In the afternoon, divided into pairs, pheasants feed right there near the current location, most often on sunflower and wheat crops. By the evening, about four o'clock, the males begin to call to each other again. When they meet, they fight among themselves. The current of pheasants continues until mid-June. The roosters scream especially hard after the females sit on the eggs. It happens from about the middle of May. The male does not take part in incubation, at this time he shouts intensely and runs around in search of single females. The hen lays from 10 to 15 eggs. She makes a nest somewhere in the reeds or in the thick grass under a thorny bush. After twenty-five days of incubation, in the first half of June, the chicks hatch. They emerge from eggs in thick down and with stumps, that is, contour feathers that begin to develop; they quickly grow flight feathers, and then they can escape from enemies by flying up trees. In the second half of August, Post: 11 July 09:15

Wild birds can now be killed so there are more game birds to shoot in England Millions of beautiful, colourful pheasants are bred every year for British game farms. They are fattened up so that they’re slow and easy to shoot once the hunting season begins. But there has long been debate over when predators can be shot to protect them. Now, as part of new guidelines, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has included a definition for when these birds are considered livestock. Under guidelines on general shooting licences approved in England on 3 January, gamekeepers will be able to legally shoot crows, magpies and jackdaws to defend pheasants, grouse and partridges. But only when they are “kept in an enclosure or which are free-roaming but remain significantly dependent on the provision of food, water or shelter by a keeper for their survival.”Post: 26 July 17:56

However, in Scotland, a venison dealer’s licence is still required for those wishing to deal in venison although deer stalkers can sell their venison direct to a venison dealer without the need for a licence. On the Isle of Man a game licence is required in order to shoot game and is available from the Treasury Office. Game is defined as pheasant, partridge, grouse or moor game and hare (brown or common). A game dealer’s licence is also required for those wishing to deal in game. There is no requirement for a game licence on Guernsey but you must hold an appropriate firearm or shotgun certificate.
