Наибольшее развитие она получила в период крепостного права. Многие помещики содержали десятки и сотни собак, много лошадей для охоты, обслуживающий персонал (выжлятников, доезжачих и пр.). На собак меняли людей, отдельные семьи, вытаптывали посевы крестьян во время охоты. Для подобного вида охоты нужны были собаки двух пород — гончие и борзые.
