Wines to Pair with Fowl Turkey, goose, pheasant? A free-range chicken, or even a capon? The time of the season seems to indicate fowl. We kind of like the idea, since it is out of the ordinary to roast a big bird for a festive feast, the kind of bird that can feed a dozen. With that comes wine challenges, though to say “challenge” is stretching the truth. That truth is almost any wine can match nicely with a big bird roast, plenty of vegetables, maybe a grilled romaine salad with parmesan and homemade croutons. Some choices: Evolve Cellars pinot blanc ($15), almost Alsatian in style with its crispness, but it is distinctively Okanagan as well, with its viscosity and herbal notes, surrounded by delightful stone fruit elements. A sensationally good sparkling wine, the Cipes Blanc de Franc ($45) from Summerhill Pyramid Winery, is a sparkling cabernet franc, which will turn heads, and have people coming back for more, so you may need to have two bottles. It is a delightful, fruit-driven wiPost: 17 September 18:10

Narochansky Eel and the Art of Ukha: A Taste of Belarusian Tradition Nestled within the pristine waters of Lake Naroch, the Narochansky eel is a prized delicacy in Belarusian cuisine. This freshwater eel, known for its rich, tender meat, has long been a staple for local fishermen and culinary enthusiasts alike. Traditionally, it is smoked or prepared in hearty stews, offering a deep, smoky flavor that pairs beautifully with rustic Belarusian dishes. One of the most beloved ways to enjoy fish in Belarus is through ukha a traditional fish soup that has been cherished for centuries. Ukha is not just a dish—it is an experience, often prepared outdoors over an open flame, bringing people together in a celebration of nature and good food. The soup is made by simmering fresh fish (including eel), potatoes, onions, and fragrant herbs, creating a light yet flavorful broth. Some variations include a splash of vodka for an extra layer of warmth and depth. The combination of Narochansky ePost: 8 June 13:28

Canada goose hunting from kayak. GoPro video. An interesting fact is that of all the subspecies of geese, the Canadian goose flies the worst. This is due to its large weight. That is why the author of the video was in no hurry to get the gun out of the case. Canada geese have been introduced in Europe in the early 17th century by explorer Samuel de Champlain who sent several pairs of geese to France as a present for King Louis XIII. The Canada goose was one of the many species described by Carl Linnaeus in his 18th-century work Systema Naturae. The Canadian goose (Branta canadensis) is a waterfowl from the duck family. It is the most widespread waterfowl in North America: its population exceeds 5 million individuals. The body length of the Canadian goose is 55-110 cm, the wingspan is 120-180 cm, and the weight is 2.0—6.5 kg. The Canadian goose is native to North America. Currently, the bird breeds mainly in Alaska and Canada, including on the Arctic coasts and islands of the CanadPost: 13 January 13:55

"Norway - 'King of the Forest' is Causing a Stir" The moose is called the "king of the forest". There are good reasons for that, it is Norway's largest mammal on land. "I have never seen anything like it, and I have seen many animals throughout my photography career, says photographer Thomas Mørch." He is talking about the spotted elk that walks around Hallingdal. A few years ago Albin the albino moose became such a big celebrity that the hunting teams protected him. A white national treasure, which was felled by a Danish hunter in 2011 who had not caught the "protection". Now the forest has a new moose that stands out. You can Texas-rig your plastics when fishing around brush or heavy cover but, again, stay with a fairly light hook. The VMC WM worm hook is a good one. In any case, always tie your hook with a Palomar knot. Not only does this make for a strong union, but the Palomar knot allows the hook to stand straight out on the line, which is essential to rigging a drop-shot. Also, when tying, use an extra bit of line so that you have a big tag end, which you’d normally clip off. But don't. Post: 13 September 18:54

The Blaser’s straight-pull bolt action is a marvel of Teutonic engineering, designed for extremely rapid shooting on driven game. The beauty of this rifle, though, is its versatility. Simply by swapping a few components, the R93 can be chambered for any cartridge ranging from .22 LR to .500 Jeffrey. A small take-down case can house the rifle along with an extra barrel or two, creating an incredibly versatile and convenient package for the international hunter. The R93 was replaced with the newer R8 a few years back, but remains a favorite for many.Post: 27 September 09:16
Alaska officials have cancelled the upcoming snow crab season, due to population decline across the Bering Sea. The fall Bristol Bay red king crab harvest will not happen. The winter harvest of smaller snow crab has also been cancelled for the first time. The causes of the population collapse are being researched but likely include increased predation and stresses from warmer water, which the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) believes may have prompted the crabs to shift away from coasts. Big Game Safaris in Nwoya Uganda: Seasonal Movements and Traditional Tracking Methods The first light of dawn creeps across the vast plains of Nwoya like a slow-moving tide, revealing silhouettes of acacia trees standing as sentinels over the grasslands. Review of the Pulsar Helion XQ38F Thermal Imager I recently purchased the Pulsar Helion XQ38F thermal imager, and after extensive use, I feel it's time to share my experience. Overall, this device has exceeded my expectations in various areas, but it does come with a few drawbacks that need addressing. The app is intuitive and straightforward to navigate, making it easy to pair with mobile devices. Image Quality: The thermal imaging provided by the XQ38F is exceptional. In Horn of the Hunter, Robert Ruark describes two Cape buffalo he took on his first safari, in 1951, in (then) Tanganyika with Harry Selby. The first was wounded and gave the pair a hell of a time until he finally succumbed. The second, which had much bigger and more massive horns, was also wounded, and disappeared into a dense thicket. Selby and Ruark looked at each other, then sat down to smoke a cigarette. As the minutes wore on, Ruark became more and more anxious about what was to come. Then Selby invited him to accompany him as he went after the buffalo — a serious compliment as you know if you’ve ever been in that situation. Ruark steeled himself, checked his .470, and off they went. The tracking took some time. It probably seemed much longer than it was, but that’s the way these things work, as they crept along, expecting a charge at any second.Post: 10 April 18:34
Two Idaho wolves kill 143 sheep in freak "pile up" Two wolves are responsible for the deaths of 143 sheep in Idaho’s Boise Foothills. The “pile-up” occurred in mid-May and, following an investigation conducted by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) and Wildlife Services, officials determined that two wolves “caused the sheep to flee in panic,” which caused them to “crush or suffocate each other” as they tried to escape, according to a press release. During the investigation, Wildlife Services discovered two sets of wolf tracks in the same location as the incident. While permission was given to remove the problem wolves if found, officials were unable to locate the animals. “This sadly exemplifies why wolf management in Idaho can be so challenging,” said IDFG Director Ed Schriever. “People cherish the Foothills for its diversity of wildlife, along with the opportunities for grazing, recreation and other activities. Rugged mountains, such as those in the Richtersveld, create dramatic backdrops for hunting, while semi-desert plains offer minimal cover, testing the skills of even the most experienced hunters. Roe deer hunting in Belarus: a great shot and tips for choosing a thermal imaging scope Roe deer hunting is an exciting activity that requires patience and skill. In our hunting club in Belarus, we are always happy to share experiences and successes. In this post, we will tell you about a recent hunt, where a hunter made a great shot in tall grass, and also provide useful tips for choosing a thermal imaging scope. Recently, one of our hunters shared a video of a successful roe deer hunt. After observing a pair of roe deer for a long time, he was able to make an accurate shot, which was possible thanks to high-quality optics and a careful approach to the hunting process. This is an example of how important it is to properly prepare and choose the right equipment. A reliable thermal imaging scope is necessary for successful roe deer hunting. 4 NEW WAYS TO TAG PUBLIC-LAND TURKEYS RIGHT NOW Try these four surefire guerilla tactics to bag your public-land gobbler this spring. 1. START SCOUTING EARLY February is usually a gloomy month for outdoorsmen. Waterfowl and whitetail seasons have recently closed. It’s too cold to go fishing, and cabin fever seems to be a common illness. However, this time of year offers the best chance at getting a jump-start on killing a spring gobbler. To beat the February blues, I like to grab my .410 for squirrels and rabbits, and lace on a good pair of hiking boots. Boots on the ground is one of the biggest factors in setting the table for spring gobbler success as knowing the lay of the land is critical. The foliage is off the trees this time of the year, which makes a walk through the woods fairly easy. The snakes and ticks usually haven’t made their warm weather debut quite yet, either. And since whitetail deer shed their antlers this time of year, you can keep a lookout for sheds while youPost: 13 December 17:45
Quail Hunting in Utah Do You Hunt Western Quail? If you own a good pair of running shoes — or better yet, a trained hunting dog — hunting Gambel’s quail in southwestern Utah might be a fun adventure this fall. Population Estimates, Where to Hunt Utah’s quail hunt opened Nov. 3. The number of Gambel’s quail has dipped a bit this year, but decent numbers of birds should still be available. You can hunt both Gambel’s and California quail until Dec. 31. (Utah is also home to a small population of scaled quail, but hunting for them is not allowed.) Jason Robinson, upland game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, says opportunities to hunt California quail in Utah are limited: most California quail are found in Duchesne and Uintah counties on land that’s either privately owned or part of the Ute Indian Reservation. (If you decide to hunt California quail, look for them in river bottoms that have Buffalo berry and Russian olive trees in them.) Hunting Gambel’s quail is differenPost: 6 July 22:06

Why hunt for bear in Maine? For new and experienced hunters alike, going on a bear hunt is a great way to enjoy nature, get some exercise, and spend quality time outdoors with friends and family. The season starts in late August, offering experienced hunters extra time to scout for other species such as deer or moose while enjoying warmer temperatures. Successful hunters are rewarded with wholesome, locally sourced, free-range, hormone-free lean protein which, if handled properly, is excellent to eat! Bear hunting also helps manage the population. Maine has a healthy and stable population of black bears – the largest in the eastern United States, in fact. Since black bears do not have any natural predators, it would be very easy for the population to grow to an unsustainable level, leading to starvation, disease, and death. Bear hunting helps keep the population at a number where bears and their environment stay healthy. Post: 26 September 10:12
