Making the Traditional Bow Switch Trading your compound bow for a recurve adds a whole new twist to your bowhunting experience Over the past few years, traditional archery has surged in popularity among recreational shooters and bowhunters alike. For many, making the switch from a compound to a recurve or long bow is a way to increase the challenge of a hunt; for others, it’s a way to embrace the simplicity of traditional archery. Choosing to bowhunt with traditional gear not only requires hunters to get closer to game but also to spend a significant amount of time practicing with their equipment to become proficient. When it comes to equipment selection and shooting style, there are many differences between a stick bow and a wheel bow that can be confusing for traditional newcomers. So, I recruited the help of long-time traditional bowhunter Travis “T-Bone” Turner to help you understand where to get started with traditional archery. Select a Bow If you think there are a lot of optio

THE GREATEST BOWHUNTER I EVER KNEW was born 121 years ago today. We shook hands for the first time in 1972 at the Pope and Young Club Convention and Awards Banquet in Denver, and our paths crossed frequently thereafter until his death in 1988. And like millions of other archers and bowhunters of that era, I was a big Fred Bear fan and longtime supporter of the legendary man in the Borsalino hat. Special personal memories include visits to the Bear Archery plant and Fred Bear Museum in Grayling, Michigan, before the company's production facility relocated to Florida; the annual Anderson Archery clinics and seminar stage we shared each June in front of large and appreciative crowds in Grand Ledge; and his final appearance at the P&Y gathering in Tulsa when we said our goodbyes one last time the year before his passing. Still, I'm eternally thankful that I could work with Pope and Young founder Glenn St. Charles, Papa Bear, and other club officers as Editor of the very first P&Y record

Bowhunter injured by angry moose You don’t want an angry moose after you – especially if it knows you tried to kill it. Rescuers responded to a distress alert from a bowhunter’s GPS in Larimer County, Colorado on Tuesday after the hunter attempted to shoot a moose with an arrow. However, when he missed, the moose “charged and then gored” the man in a remote area off Long Draw Road and Highway 14 in the Poudre Canyon, according to Channel 9 News. The response time was “escalated” once officials learned that the hunter likely had “serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.” “Deputies located the hunter, who had hiked part of the way out of the campground by other hunters,” said Larimer County Sheriff’s office (LCSO) spokesperson Jenevieve Kramer. The first deputy was able to provide first aid and place a tourniquet on the injured man’s arm while keeping him comfortable as they waited for Poudre Canyon Fire Protection District paramedics. Paramedics. The hunter was airlifted to

THEN AND NOW -- Was sorting through old photos today and came across a b/w 1974 photo taken in our Fort Wayne home's family room where several of my bowhunting mounts were being displayed. The mountain lion (1970) and black bear (1971) rugs, as well as the whitetail mount (1963), represent my first record book big game animals. The color photo shows a portion of our Indiana Cattail Valley home's Memory Room and entryway where a few more mounts remind me of other unforgettable bowhunts I've made during my decades as BOWHUNTER Magazine Editor/Founder. Feature articles about each North American adventure have been published in ARCHERY, OUTDOOR LIFE and, of course, the magazine my partners and I created and first printed in the summer of 1971. Can't help but wonder how many of today's friends and followers have read some of published features. Any favorite or memorable tale that stood out. Buffalo County A bowhunter in Buffalo County killed a cougar Nov. 11 after the animal reportedly threatened the man. A bowhunter killed a cougar Nov. 11 in Buffalo County after reportedly being threatened by the animal, according to the Department of Natural Resources. The incident took place on private property in western Buffalo County. The hunter, licensed to pursue white-tailed deer during the Wisconsin bow season, was in a tree stand when he saw the cougar and felt his safety was at risk, said Randy Johnson, DNR large carnivore specialist. The hunter then used his bow to shoot and kill the animal. The hunter, who was not identifed, contacted the DNR to report the incident. Cougars are a protected species in Wisconsin but humans have the right to protect themselves against a wild animal if their safety is threatened. After reviewing results of an investigation by DNR conservation wardens into the cougar killing, the Buffalo County district attorney concluded no charge was war

The Perfect Bowhunting Equipment for Alaska One thing I used to always think about is if I have the right bow setup for hunting in Alaska. I am going to cover some things that have helped me choose the perfect bow setup for me to hunt the backcountry of Alaska. I am no expert by any means, but I have hunted a lot throughout Alaska and the Lower 48 and this is what has been the all-around best setup for me. There are several factors that go into making a choice for the setup you want to bowhunt with. The first and sometimes the hardest thing you have to choose is your bow! I like to start with a bow that is light in weight, compact but not too compact, and produces good arrow speed. For example, the bow I am shooting currently is the Xpedition Archery Xscape. The bare bow weighs around 3.9 pounds. It measures 30-inches ATA (axle to axle), with an International Bowhunters Organization (IBO) speed 348- to 352 feet per second (FPS). This bow is fairly light, compact and offers great spee

WISCONSIN BOWHUNTER ATTACKED BY BLACK BEAR When you’re hunting from a treestand, the last thing you expect is for a bear to climb up to attack you. Unfortunately, that’s what happened to Wisconsin bowhunter Dalton Roach. The 300-lb black bear, curious as to what Roach was doing up in the tree, climbed up and bit him in the back, KARE reports. “It’s definitely not totally uncommon for a bear to go into a tree with a hunter,” said Roach. “But the fact that he actually started gnawing on me and stuff, like that was a little abnormal.” He initially spotted the bear from his treestand and started recording it; however, “[b]y the time he was under my tree and then up behind me, [it] was 15 total seconds,” said Roach. Fortunately, he realized the situation he was in and didn’t panic despite the fresh puncture wounds and proximity to the bear. “I kind of pulled myself out and then stood around, and turned kinda in one motion to then face the bear and then just started yelling and holle

Amur Tiger in Russia The number of Amur tigers in the East of Russia has increased significantly since the protection program was launched 15 years ago. And apparently the tiger protection program is bearing fruit. There are really a lot of tigers in the Amur region and Primorsky Krai, and it is necessary to regulate their number. Currently, residents of Primorsky Krai have asked local governments and Russian President Vladimir Putin to clarify the situation around the dangerous Amur tiger, which is beginning to pose a threat to the inhabitants of the entire Far East. Residents say that they need protection from breeding and daring animals, which no one can offer them. Animals, which have long been more than 700 people, are increasingly acting boldly and attacking dogs and cows. There were also cases of attacks on people. In addition to the letter, the president and governor also received video messages from residents confirming their willingness to go all the way until the situat

IT'S NO SECRET that I'm addicted to studying and sharing the rich history of American archery and bowhunting. Today I'm focusing on Roy Case (1888-1986), rightfully known as "The Father of Wisconsin Bowhunting" and the man widely credited with coining the term "bowhunter." He's also recognized as the first-ever licensed archer to tag a deer during any state's firearms season. Archery history was made December 6, 1930, when Case arrowed a spike buck in Vilas County, Wisconsin. At that time, he was shooting a longbow and wood arrows equipped with steel broadheads of his own design -- the Case Kiska hunting head, which he made and sold nationwide between the 1920s and 1950s. He also wrote and published stories about his various archery hunts in "Ye Sylvan Archer" magazine. Also noteworthy is the fact Case worked to establish America's first bow-only deer season in his home state (1934). His work with hunting heads helped establish modern day legal broadhead standards that are still in

Second, your weapon will determine your season, which also determines your experience. It is nearly universal, for example, that archery season for big game happens in September because it coincides with the elk rut (mating season). Hunting during the elk rut is a uniquely powerful experience. During this time, bull elk vie for the attention of cows, piercing the mountain air with their signature bugles, grunts, chuckles, and screams. The ability to hear the animals and understand their intent, and engage in vocal communication with a 600-pound king of the forest, is one of the most intense, thrilling, and addictive elements of archery hunting. Elk language is nuanced and laden with information. As a bowhunter your goal is to paint a picture in the animal’s mind with the timing, location, tone, and intensity of your vocalization. In one situation you might imitate a cow elk looking for love, while in another you might communicate to a bull that you’re a bigger bull ready to rumble. (If

Indiana Hunt for Hunger asking hunters to consider donating deer harvest LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hunters in Indiana are being asked to donate from their deer harvest to help state food banks. In a release, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters about Indiana Hunt for Hunger. The reminder comes as deer firearms hunting season begins and the need for protein donations remains strong across the state. Updated this year with a new name and website, Indiana Hunt for Hunger turns donated deer into healthy venison that is provided to Hoosiers through food banks across the state. The program, previously called the Sportsmen’s Benevolence Fund, was started by the Indiana DNR and its partners in 2008. Since then, it has grown across the state to collect thousands of deer donations, providing hundreds of thousands of meals for Hoosiers.

Yes, beautifully managed trophy hunting by Zambezi Delta Safaris in 500,000 acre Hunting Block 11 has increased native wildlife to such high numbers that they were able to reintroduce cheetahs, a predator missing from the area for at least 100 years. Cabela's Family Foundation is a big part of this program. Four cheetah were released this day. I got this shot by running a GoPro 10 on video mode atop a small tripod while I operated a Canon R6 and 150-600mm Sigma. Lots of good video from both cameras, but this single frame pulled from the GoPro captured the essence of wildlife restoration advanced by and funded by dedicated sport/trophy hunters. Life on the Ledge: Judging Yardage Shooting at Alaska big game presents a unique set of problems for the bowhunter. They live in such diverse terrain; they are frequently hunted in extreme weather and they vary dramatically in size from hundred-pound deer to nearly a ton of bison. And, regardless of size, habitat or weather, one of the biggest challenges of bowhunting is judging distance to the target animal. Mis-guessing the distance to the target, by only a few yards, is perhaps the most common reason archers miss game when bowhunting. Even with high tech, modern bows, there is still plenty of arc in an arrow’s flight path. Without question, the best way to judge yardage is to make use of a modern laser range finder, preferably one with angle-compensation features. However, there are many hunting scenarios when laser ranging is not practical or too time consuming. So, nothing will ever take the place of being able to accurately gauge distance by eyeballing it quickly. Learning to

How to Call in a Bull Elk Like a Calling Champion Do You Use These Techniques? You might expect a top elk caller to focus his hunting advice on proper call selection, volume, tone, timing or teamwork. But one Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation World Elk Calling Championship winner says perhaps the most critical step to calling in elk is how you set up to intercept an approaching bull. Corey Jacobsen of Boise, Idaho, is one of the most decorated world champion elk callers in the country, as well as a consistently successful bowhunter. Jacobsen offers the following key advice on calling elk into bow range: “The setup might be the most critical step," Jacobsen said. "It always plays a major role in determining the outcome of a hunt. I can’t count how many hunts have been blown by a bad setup — too much brush to shoot through, not enough cover to hide in, no shooting lanes, inconsistent wind currents, caught in the open, the list goes on and on. “I always repeat one word to myself when I’m s
