Quail Hunting in Utah Do You Hunt Western Quail? If you own a good pair of running shoes — or better yet, a trained hunting dog — hunting Gambel’s quail in southwestern Utah might be a fun adventure this fall. Population Estimates, Where to Hunt Utah’s quail hunt opened Nov. 3. The number of Gambel’s quail has dipped a bit this year, but decent numbers of birds should still be available. You can hunt both Gambel’s and California quail until Dec. 31. (Utah is also home to a small population of scaled quail, but hunting for them is not allowed.) Jason Robinson, upland game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, says opportunities to hunt California quail in Utah are limited: most California quail are found in Duchesne and Uintah counties on land that’s either privately owned or part of the Ute Indian Reservation. (If you decide to hunt California quail, look for them in river bottoms that have Buffalo berry and Russian olive trees in them.) Hunting Gambel’s quail is differenPost: 6 July 22:06

Pheasants Forever - In 1982, a group of pheasant hunters saw the connection between upland habitat loss and declining pheasant populations. An organization dedicated to wildlife habitat conservation was needed, and Pheasants Forever was formed. Then in 2005, as quail numbers continued to decline nationwide, passionate conservationists across the country stepped up once again to found Quail Forever. Together, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s mission work quickly garnered it a reputation as “The Habitat Organization,” a tagline the nonprofit conservation group uses proudly to this day. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s mission is to conserve pheasants, quail, and other wildlife through habitat improvements, public access, education and conservation advocacy. 5 Factors for Rut Hunting Success 1. Weather Having the right weather can influence how much rutting activity you see — or don't see — on any given hunt. A cold front with a little rain to break a stale weather pattern, followed by a clear, crisp morning can seem to bring deer out of the woodwork. On the flip side, warm weather can slow the action to a crawl. Contrary to popular belief, the weather doesn't determine when deer breed. But it does influence how much of that breeding activity you see out in the open during daylight. Does often hug tight to thick cover when in estrus anyway, and they move even less when it's warmer than average. Bucks don't seem to cruise in the open as often, or for as long, during those unseasonably warm days, either. Don’t Miss: Big Bucks in Nasty Places 2. Available Bedding Cover Rut tactics are almost always terrain-based. So if you aren’t hunting around the type of quality bedding cover deer need this time of year, action will likely be minimal. GAME WARDEN RESCUES MULE DEER FROM MUD PIT A mule deer doe is lucky to be alive after being rescued from quicksand-like mud in Idaho. The yearling sunk through a supposed “mud puddle” after she tried to walk across it in a field by Marsh Creek Road north of McCammon during Memorial Day weekend, according to a press release. Fortunately, a homeowner spotted the doe, which was belly deep in the mud and helpless, and contacted Idaho Department of Fish and Game Senior Conservation Officer Nick Noll, who came to the animal’s rescue. Using wooden boards, a shovel, rope and Noll’s 15-year-old neighbor, Cole Gunter, the duo managed to rescue the deer from the sticky mud. Boards prevented them from also sinking as Noll and Gunter used the rope to secure the front and hind quarters of the doe, according to the agency. Post: 17 September 18:04
HOW TO STAY WARM WHILE HUNTING Cold weather means whitetails are going to be on their feet more than normal. So, you have choices to make. Stay at home and watch hunting shows on TV, go to the field and be miserable or embrace the cold and learn how to make the most of it. I have lived in North Dakota for 26 years. In that time, I have hunted some very harsh conditions. It’s never an easy hunt but the rewards can make it well worth the effort. There are many factors involved in comfortably hunting cold weather including proper preparation, quality clothing, individual tolerances and plain ole determination. Here are some of my tips for not just surviving a cold weather hunt but actually enjoying it. HOW TO DRESS FOR COLD WEATHER Feet - Most people have trouble keeping their feet warm. I have tried just about everything out there and have finally figured out what works for me. The first rule is that your boots need to fit loosely. Hunting dog survives 50-foot fall into well, rescued by Texas game wardens Maria, a bird dog, was chasing an injured quail when she went missing. Texas game wardens had to get a bit creative while rescuing a hunting dog name Maria who found herself lost at the bottom of a well in South Texas during a recent hunting trip. According to the game wardens blotter, during the course of the quail hunt on a property in Jim Hogg County, Maria had chased an injured bird through a thicket and didn't return, which worried her owners. They began an immediate search and eventually found her trapped about 50 feet down at the bottom of a well on the property. Game wardens in Jim Hogg County, typically tasked with enforcing the state's hunting and wildlife laws, were quick to arrive and used a makeshift pulley system to lower a kennel to the bottom. Inside the kennel, they placed hunted quail to entice Maria inside, wardens said. After some time, the pup eventually moved into the crate. Maria waPost: 22 March 09:57

That clearing is Garrett Vene Klasen’s front yard and he has a front-row seat for the wildest feast he’s ever witnessed. There’s only one problem. He doesn’t have the right camera. “The right camera would have made a huge difference,” says Garrett Vene Klasen, hunter and New Mexico Wild northern conservation director. “All I had was the camera on my doorbell, which is sad.” The shots from that doorbell camera are low-grade grainy and the audio sounds stuffed with earwax. You can tell what’s going on as long as you’re in range of the home’s Wi-Fi, but the experience is lackluster due to poor resolution and limited capabilities. Although sloths are classified as two-toed or three-toed, both have three toes. One of the lesser-known sloth facts is that all sloth species actually have three claws or toes. The two-toed species only has two claws on their front legs, but three on their back legs. Whereas the three-toed sloths have three at both the front and the back. Ancient sloths were as big as elephants before. According to San Diego Zoo, sloths from 10,000 years ago possibly reached an elephant’s size. Judge Issues Injunction Blocking Wisconsin Fall Wolf Hunt A judge on Friday (10/22/2021) halted Wisconsin's fall wolf season two weeks before hunters were set to take to the woods, siding with wildlife advocacy groups who argued holding the hunt would be unconstitutional. Dane County Circuit Judge Jacob Frost issued a temporary injunction halting the season, which was set to begin November 6. The order comes as part of a lawsuit that a coalition of wildlife advocacy groups filed in August seeking to stop the hunt and invalidate a state law authorizing annual seasons. Among other things, the coalition argued that the season is illegal because the (Wisconsin) Department of Natural Resources hasn't updated its regulations setting season parameters, and has been relying on an emergency rule put in place shortly after then-Gov. Scott Walker signed a law in 2012 authorizing annual seasons and a wolf-management plan that hasn't been updated since 2007. Frost said the law creating the wolf Post: 26 October 19:27
