Hunting in Ogooué-Ivindo, Gabon: Geography and Hunting Seasons, Laws and Legislation, Hunting Communities in Gabon Natural Features of Gabon Region Ogooué-Ivindo, located in northeastern Gabon, spans approximately 46,075 km², making it the country's largest and most sparsely populated province. The region is characterized by vast tropical rainforests, intersected by the Ogooué and Ivindo rivers. Notable geographical features include Mont Bengoué, Gabon's highest peak at 1,070 meters. The province is home to Ivindo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its biodiversity, including species such as forest elephants, gorillas, and sitatungas. Demographics of Ogooué-Ivindo As per the 2013 census, Ogooué-Ivindo had a population of approximately 63,293. The region is inhabited by various ethnic groups, including the Fang, Kota, and Kwele. While specific data on the number of hunters is not readily available, hunting remains a traditional practice among these communities, serving both subsistence and cultural purposes. Hunting Practices in Gabon Hunting methods in Ogooué-Ivindo include: Firearms: Primarily 12-gauge shotguns are used for hunting medium to large game. Traps and Snares: Utilized for capturing smaller animals such as rodents and duikers. Nets: Employed in group hunting to capture multiple animals simultaneously. Traditional Weapons: Bows, arrows, and spears are still used, particularly in remote areas. Hunting is conducted both during the day and at night, with nocturnal hunts facilitated by the use of flashlights or torches. Animals in Ogooué-Ivindo Region The province hosts a variety of game species, including: Blue duiker (Philantomba monticola) Red river hog (Potamochoerus porcus) Brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus) Bay duiker (Cephalophus dorsalis) Water chevrotain (Hyemoschus aquaticus) Various primates and small carnivores These species are commonly hunted for subsistence and local trade. Hunting Seasons and Prohibitions In Gabon, the official hunting season typically runs from March 16 to September 14. Hunting is prohibited during the breeding season, from September 15 to March 15, to allow wildlife populations to replenish. However, enforcement of these regulations can be challenging, and hunting may occur outside the designated seasons. Hunting Organizations and Clubs While there are no widely known hunting clubs specific to Ogooué-Ivindo Province, community-based management initiatives are emerging in Gabon. These efforts aim to establish officially recognized community forests managed by hunter associations, promoting sustainable hunting practices and conservation awareness. Hunting Legislation in the Regions Gabonese law regulates hunting through the Forest Code (Law No. 16/01), which includes: Prohibition of night hunting and the use of cable snares. Ban on hunting during the closed season (September 15 to March 15). Protection of certain species, such as the red river hog, which is fully protected despite its prevalence in bushmeat markets. Enforcement challenges persist, with a significant portion of hunting occurring illegally due to economic and subsistence pressures. Cultural Traditions and other Customs Hunting holds cultural significance in Ogooué-Ivindo Province, with traditional practices passed down through generations. Communal hunts and the use of traditional weapons are part of the region's heritage. These practices are intertwined with social structures and rituals, reflecting the deep-rooted connection between communities and the natural environment. Interesting Facts about Ogooué-Ivindo Ogooué-Ivindo is home to the Ipassa Research Station, an Important Bird Area near Makokou, where 190 species of bird restricted to the Guinea-Congo Forest biome have been recorded. The province's diverse landscapes, including mountains, forests, and rivers, provide habitats for a wide range of wildlife species, making it a significant area for both hunting and conservation efforts.

Mountain hunting in 🇿🇦 South Africa? A target at 500, 600, 700 meters and even further? Yes! If these are the green hills of the Eastern Cape province and hunting wild pigs. 👍 A very interesting hunting format - tracking from afar, and then sneaking up on the mountains and, if possible, a long-range shot. 1️⃣ First, traditionally drive up by car, 2️⃣ then climb higher, find a comfortable position and 3️⃣ binoculars neighboring hills. Telescopes were very useful. Now is the most active time - the rut of wild pigs. No need for bait, ambush near water - this is unnecessary now. All the action is in the mountains and a patient hunter will not miss it! 👉 It is worth noting that the trophies of foothill pigs are excellent: the size is impressive, the weight is under 80-90 kg - this is not a warthog (!), but almost a bushpig. The fangs are also decent. The number of trophies for a 5-day tour is from several to several dozen. Depends on desire and possibilities. 👐 Who wants to spend a great vacation in the most beautiful and unusual places of already familiar destinations - our most confident recommendations! 💬 write to Telegram (https://t.me/safari_stalker) 📞 +7 903 755-79-05 #wild_pig_hunting

Behemoth ( hippopotamus ) has been studied quite a bit. It's not easy to watch this cautious giant, constantly sitting up to his ears in his favorite swamp. What we know for sure from the Hippos is t that you can't lose weight by eating grass, salads and walking in the fresh air ))) An adult male hippopotamus is 4 meters long and 4 tons of live weight. That is, the mass of two cars, this is not a sheep sneezed! By its size, the hippopotamus, overtaking the buffalo, shares with the rhinoceros an honorable second place (after the elephant) among land animals. The name in Hebrew is בההוו (behemoth) - "terrible beasts". The second, more learned name is ἱπποπόταμος (hippopotamos), which literally means "river horse" in Greek. The hippopotamus is considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. An embittered animal can kill a person in a matter of minutes, trampling him with its feet or inflicting fatal wounds with its fangs. The behemoth is also strong in the water: it is capable of turning over a medium-sized sailing vessel, and turning the hull of the boat, easily biting through with huge fangs, literally into a sieve. Hippopotamuses are the most dangerous, protecting their only cub. Suspecting the slightest danger, the female rushes at the enemy, sweeping away everything in her path, and fights to the last. According to some reports, more people die each year as a result of hippo attacks in Africa than from crocodile attacks.

Honest Review of the Hatsan Escort Dynamax 12x76 Semi-Auto Shotgun (Black Synthetic) Pros: Affordable and Reliable: The Hatsan Escort Dynamax is an excellent entry-level semi-automatic shotgun for those on a budget. It offers great value for the price, making it accessible for beginners or casual shooters. Durable Build: The black synthetic stock is lightweight yet sturdy, making it resistant to harsh weather conditions and rough handling. It’s perfect for hunting or outdoor use. Smooth Operation: The semi-automatic action cycles reliably with most 12-gauge loads, including 76mm (3-inch) shells. It’s great for clay shooting, hunting, or home defense. Easy to Maintain: The shotgun disassembles quickly and easily for cleaning, which is a big plus for those who aren’t fans of complicated maintenance routines. Comfortable to Shoot: The ergonomic design and recoil pad help reduce felt recoil, making it more comfortable to shoot over extended periods. Versatile: It comes with 5 chokes (Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full), allowing you to adapt to different shooting scenarios. Cons: Heavy Trigger Pull: The trigger is on the heavier side, which can affect accuracy, especially for precision shooting. It’s something to get used to over time. Break-In Period: Some users report that the shotgun requires a break-in period with heavier loads to cycle lighter loads reliably. This can be a minor inconvenience for those eager to start shooting right away. Fit and Finish: While functional, the overall fit and finish are not as refined as higher-end shotguns. The synthetic stock feels a bit plasticky, and the metal parts could benefit from better finishing. Recoil: Despite the recoil pad, the lightweight design can make the recoil feel sharper compared to heavier shotguns. It’s manageable but worth noting for smaller-framed shooters. Limited Aftermarket Support: Accessories and customization options are somewhat limited compared to more popular brands like Beretta or Benelli. Overall Impression: The Hatsan Escort Dynamax 12x76 is a solid choice for those looking for an affordable, reliable, and versatile semi-automatic shotgun. It’s not without its flaws, but for the price, it delivers excellent performance and durability. It’s ideal for beginners, casual shooters, or anyone who needs a dependable shotgun for hunting or recreational shooting. If you’re willing to overlook some minor drawbacks, this shotgun is a great value for the money. #HatsanEscortDynamax #SemiAutoShotgun #12Gauge #HuntingShotgun #ClayShooting #AffordableFirearms #SyntheticStock #ShotgunReview #Firearms #OutdoorGear #BeginnerShotgun #HomeDefense #TurkeyHunting #WaterfowlHunting #BudgetFriendly

THE GREATEST BOWHUNTER I EVER KNEW was born 121 years ago today. We shook hands for the first time in 1972 at the Pope and Young Club Convention and Awards Banquet in Denver, and our paths crossed frequently thereafter until his death in 1988. And like millions of other archers and bowhunters of that era, I was a big Fred Bear fan and longtime supporter of the legendary man in the Borsalino hat. Special personal memories include visits to the Bear Archery plant and Fred Bear Museum in Grayling, Michigan, before the company's production facility relocated to Florida; the annual Anderson Archery clinics and seminar stage we shared each June in front of large and appreciative crowds in Grand Ledge; and his final appearance at the P&Y gathering in Tulsa when we said our goodbyes one last time the year before his passing. Still, I'm eternally thankful that I could work with Pope and Young founder Glenn St. Charles, Papa Bear, and other club officers as Editor of the very first P&Y record book, published in 1975 with Fred's financial assistance. I also give thanks for eventually being elected President of the P&Y Club and in 2003 voted into the Archery Hall of Fame where true giants of the sport -- including Fred Bear and Glenn St. Charles and Howard Hill -- were enshrined for their roles in sparking the worldwide growth of 20th Century archery/bowhunting. My biggest regret was I never accepted Fred's invitation to join him and other friends at his Grousehaven deer hunting camp in central Michigan. My work as BOWHUNTER Magazine Editor/Founder had always seemed to get in the way, and I could rationalize there was always next year -- until there wasn't. Regardless, I feel eternally blessed to have played an active role in documenting a great sport that has had millions of participants and remains popular with men, women, boys, and girls across much of our 21st Century world. To have known Papa Bear, Glenn St. Charles, Jim Dougherty, Earl and Ann Hoyt, Gail Martin, Tom Jennings, and Bill Wadsworth was a pleasure. And to have spread the gospel beside my BOWHUNTER contemporaries -- Fred Asbell, Dwight Schuh, Chuck Adams, Dr. Dave Samuel, and Len Cardinale --has been a true privilege. #

Hardware: Browning A5 Wicked Wing Sweet Sixteen

A legendary early 20th century shotgun, the 16-gauge dropped off the map in 1989 when skeet shooting rules were finalized

Hardware: Browning A5 Wicked Wing Sweet Sixteen A legendary early 20th century shotgun, the 16-gauge dropped off the map in 1989 when skeet shooting rules were finalized by the newly formed National Sporting Clays Association, and the gauge didn’t make the cut. As much as field shooters favored the shotgun’s lightweight, functional, easy-on-the-shoulder nature, skeet shooters press the trigger more than upland and waterfowl hunters combined, and ammo manufacturers couldn’t justify the cost of production. Browning A5 Wicked Wing Sweet Sixteen Semi Automatic Shotgun. Today, however, this near-perfect gauge is making a remarkable comeback. Why? Efficiency. Not only do 16-gauge loads hit with a wallop, especially with modern-day tungsten and bismuth, the guns are simply a joy to tote. Weighing less than most 12-gauge options and comparable to 20-gauge models, a quality 16-gauge makes a tremendous all-day field gun for any shooter. I’m a Browning fan, and my 12-gauge A5 has been my waterfowl go-to for over five years. The gun is a shooter, and I’m deadly with it in my hands. I was elated when Browning’s all-new A5 Wicked Wing Sweet Sixteen arrived at my local gun shop. My grandfather had an old, beat-up 16—I couldn’t tell you the make and model—and I loved that shotgun. I was excited to put Browning’s new-for-2022 beauty through the paces. The shotgun is a showstopper. The composite stock and forearm on the tested model were cloaked in Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Habitat camo, and the humpback receiver and 28-inch (26-inch barrel available) barrel sport a Cerakote Burnt Bronze camo finish. The camo pattern is continued onto the receiver, laser etched onto the Cerakote finish giving the Wicked Wing some extra eye appeal. Of course, the legendary gold Browning trigger stands out, and I loved the over-sized bolt release that mimics the look of a shotshell head. The two-bead sight system is back, and shooters will appreciate the red front fiber-optic, visible in nearly any lighting condition. Another sweet, no-pun-intended addition is the extended Invector-DS Goose Band choke tube. Browning went to great lengths to ensure that when consumers look at this shotgun, they know it was designed to be a waterfowl wrecker. Metal parts adorned in Cerakote, the A5 Sweet Sixteen passed all of my scratch tests and should be able to withstand even the nastiest ducking weather. Assembly of the A5 is about the easiest I’ve come across. There’s a pleasant lack of tricks and jostling required to seat the barrel and action correctly. The shotgun shoulders brilliantly at just 6-plus pounds, and the slim, ergonomic forearm only sweetens the build. Chalk up this slim forearm to the recoil-operated Kinematic Drive system, as opposed to a gas-operating system with springs and buffers usually located around the magazine tube. Cheek weld on the composite stock feels natural—no raising, lowering or canting of my head was necessary to look down the barrel and line up the sights. More on this later. Browning A5 Wicked Wing Sweet Sixteen Shotgun Action. The action is smooth, and the Cerakoted operating handle is perfectly curved and gridded for increased purchase. The action lock is located on the bottom of the shotgun just in front of the trigger guard, and the oversized bolt release will be appreciated when Mother Nature is being cruel and hands are covered with monstrous gloves. The push-button safety, though not huge, sits outside the trigger guard, above and behind. Black is cold, and red is hot; you know the drill. The Sweet Sixteen is fitted for a sling, and two attachment points are found, one at the rear and the other on the fore-end cap. Built to accept 2¾-inch 16-gauge loads, shells glide into the chamber gently and create an audible click once seated. Browning’s effort to create an uber-balanced gun shines when you shoulder the Sweet Sixteen; Browning dubs this Ergo Balance. This technology blends the shotgun’s zero point of impact (50 percent of the pattern above the target and 50 percent below the target) with the legendary humpback receiver and flat-rib barrel design to give the shooter a larger sight plane. A larger sight plane means less opportunity for shooter error. While duck and goose seasons had ended by the time I got my hands on the Sweet Sixteen, I crushed trap, skeet and sporting clays for days using popular duck and goose loads. The shotgun swings effortlessly and fits me like a glove. I laid flat in my layout and had my son launch clays over my head to add additional in-the-field realism. I could rave about the balance and shootability of this gun forever, but all that ink will do you no good. You need to shoot this new A5 Sweet Sixteen for yourself. Recoil is another place where the A5 Sweet Sixteen ranks high. The Kinematic Drive system robs kinetic energy that would be transferred into the shooter’s shoulder and utilizes that power to eject spent shells cleanly and chamber the next. Of course, Browning’s Inflex recoil pad works like a wonder, and less recoil means quicker target acquisition and more accurate shooting on second and third shots. Over two weeks, my family and I put more than 300 rounds through the shotgun and experienced zero issues. Make no mistake: This 16-gauge is a shotgun that can be used successfully by a wide range of shooters because of its light weight, slim build and lack of recoil. My wife and 16-year-old son fell in love with it, meaning I see yet another Browning purchase in my future. Browning A5 Wicked Wing Sweet Sixteen Shotgun Barrel with Choke Tube. I’m an Invector-DS fan, and three tubes come with the gun: full, modified and improved cylinder. I tested each at various ranges, and the modified and improved are what you’d expect. The full, though, was extra impressive. My 50-yard pattern shooting Hevi-Bismuth No. 4 was remarkable, and for grins—and because I planned to jelly a turkey head with the gun in the coming weeks—I put numerous pellets in the head of a Birchwood Casey Reactive Paper Turkey target at 60 yards with Hevi-Bismuth No. 6. Both tests were conducted from shooting sticks using the shotgun’s standard ivory mid-bead sight and front fiber-optic sight. Impressive. My son is a snow-goose killer, and while we were taking apart the gun and putting it back together for cleaning purposes, he pointed out the TurnKey Magazine Plug. It’s a win. Use your truck key (or just about anything else), and in seconds, you can remove the shotgun’s plug, which is handy for springtime snow goose pursuits. If you’re a serious waterfowler looking to tote a light-recoiling yet plenty powerful shotgun that performs flawlessly and swings beautifully on even the fastest flying teal, the A5 Wicked Wing Sweet Sixteen is the shotgun for you.
