After deer season closes, rabbit hunting offers up an exciting pastime in the winter months. It's a different rush from the explosion of grouse hunting or the majesty of flushing a mallard at dawn, but rabbit hunting has its particular draws. Rabbit hunting is a new kind of challenge, and a fun one, for many hunters. The burst of brown fur out of the underbrush, followed by the fluid movement of your rifle, spurs adrenaline through your body. Rabbits are plentiful, so, if you find them, you can usually put a few away for future meals of yummy rabbit stew. It's a great way to get novice hunters and youngsters out there, especially in a season that doesn't have too many options for hunting. You don't need a pack of dogs to go rabbit hunting; you can head out on a solo hunt with a single shot and a pocketful of shells and be just as successful. By studying rabbits' defensive strategies, understanding their hiding places, and being patient, you'll be well on your way to bagging a few

Hunting the Modern Cottontail Rabbit A New Age Has Dawned in the World of Rabbit Hunting Hunters have been pursuing the Eastern cottontail ever since the time of the earliest Native Americans. Although hunter numbers have declined from peak numbers, rabbit hunting still remains extremely popular overall and is one of the most popular small game pursuits. However, the dynamics of hunting cottontails have changed dramatically, and to achieve consistent success in the field, hunters must adapt to the new age of rabbit hunting. The Decline Bunny Facts: The number of rabbit hunters has declined through the years. Even so, rabbit hunting is still popular. According to recent surveys, approximately 1.5 million people hunt rabbits and/or hares. Rabbit/hare hunting ranked as the fourth most popular hunting endeavor, tied with pheasant hunting and behind only whitetail deer, turkey, and squirrel. Rabbit hunting ranked more popular than waterfowl and dove hunting, as well as all other species s

Hunters From California report that a safe is good when it really saves. Wildfires in Southern California are a frequent phenomenon, one might say, as common as winter snow in Alaska. The "dry season" lasts an average of six months without any raindrop. Dry grass or forest catches fire, and the wind spreads the flames like lightning. There is not enough fresh water in California. Households often limit their water consumption. It is forbidden to grow vegetables on the territory of the house, because they need to be watered. These problems have been around for many, many years. WHY is the scale of fires increasing every year? And why did the fire take on the scale of a national disaster in January 2025? Experts compete to calculate the damage. The damage caused by fires in Los Angeles today already amounts to 135-150 billion dollars. Someone claims 200 billion or even more. Everyone is discussing the cost of celebs and politicians houses that were burned down or remained unharmed.

Australia is being ravaged by the worst wildfires seen in decades, with large swaths of the country devastated since the fire season began in late July. At least 28 people have died nationwide, and in the state of New South Wales (NSW) alone, more than 3,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged. State and federal authorities are struggling to contain the massive blazes, even with firefighting assistance from other countries, including the United States. All this has been exacerbated by persistent heat and drought, and many point to climate change as a factor making natural disasters go from bad to worse. Where are the fires? There have been fires in every Australian state, but New South Wales has been hardest hit. Blazes have torn through bushland, wooded areas, and national parks like the Blue Mountains. Some of Australia's largest cities have also been affected, including Melbourne and Sydney -- where fires have damaged homes in the outer suburbs and thick plumes of smoke have bl

The American Foxhound: Your All-American Hunting Partner For generations, the American Foxhound has been a cornerstone of the hunting tradition in the United States. Bred for stamina, scenting ability, and pack-oriented teamwork, this breed is more than just a dog – it's a partner in the pursuit. If you're considering adding an American Foxhound to your kennel, here's what you need to know. Quarry: What Can an American Foxhound Hunt? The American Foxhound's name gives away its primary target: foxes. However, their versatility extends beyond just red and gray fox. These hounds are also effective on: Coyotes: Their endurance and pack mentality make them well-suited for chasing coyotes across open country. The SPAS-12 was designed to function primarily in semi-automatic mode, with the pump-action mode used to reliably fire low-pressure ammunition such as tear gas rounds or less-lethal bean bags. The firing mode is switched by depressing the button under the fore-grip and also sliding it forwards or backwards until it clicks into position allowing the rotating sleeve to open or close the two gas ports. The semi-automatic mode functions with a short-stroke gas piston system. When a shell is fired, the pressure makes the bolt move rearward but the bolt will stop before opening as it deploys a single top locking lug. The gas vents into the barrel and the gas port is located towards the end of the barrel. From the gas port, the gas vents downwards into the gas block where it pushes the piston rearward. Because of the presence of the magazine tube and to avoid the use of a top-mounted gas system, the gas block and the piston are annular, along with the piston spring they enclose the magazine

How to Make Moose Jerky Moose jerky is delicious, nutritious and easy to make. The basic concept in my recipe is to take a quality cut of moose, slice it thin, marinate it for four hours and then remove the moisture from the meat in a dehydrator for four- to six hours at 155℉. Here’s how I make moose jerky: Ingredients 3 pound lean moose roast or steak 2/3 cup Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup soy sauce 2 tbsp honey 2 tsp ground black pepper 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes 1 tsp onion powder Step 1 Using a meat slicer—I use a Weston Pro 320 10” Meat Slicer—cut your moose into 1/8-inch slices. I like using lean steaks and roasts from the rear quarter. Flank steak is another popular option. I’ve tried backstrap, but didn’t like it as well due to the fat marbling in the meat. Frozen, slightly thawed meat works best for slicing in a meat slicer. Step 2 In a medium bowl, mix all the ingredients (except the moose) until blended. I use a whisk to integrate the honey into the liquid. Pour the mix

Hunting Squirrels: Which .22 is for You? Lever-action, single-shot, bolt-action, semi-automatic and pump. When we picture a .22-caliber rifle in our mind, one of these traditional guns is sure to appear. However, a new style is emerging as a great sporting tool. Lately, .22-caliber rifles are being built on tactical rifle frames. These guns may look a lot different, but when it comes to putting a round in a squirrel’s ear they all work the same. With squirrel season in full swing in the Midwest, what better time to take a look at America’s favorite rifle caliber. Literally billions of rounds of .22-caliber rimfire ammunition are fired each year. Most of it is shot while plinking and hunting squirrels and rabbits, though small varmints like groundhogs are also heavily hunted with rimfire guns Today, almost all rimfire ammo in common use is of .22-caliber, with only a few limited exceptions (like the .17 HMR). This was not always the case, however. One of the most sought-after "Yankee"

After my weekend training in Moscow shooting club, I remembered an outstanding meeting. It took place last September at the ADIHEX 2024, Abu Dhabi hunting exhibition. On a photo one of the fastest shooters on the planet, Raniero Testa. He had already set several world records and continues to surprise with new ones. Only after trying yourself in some kind of sport or art, you can really understand how difficult it is. What kind of effort and dedication does it take to become the best in what you do. I have great respect for all real professionals regardless of the type of activity. Raniero Testa (Italy) holds the record by throwing 17 sports clay targets with his hands and smashing them with 17 shots. And that's not all: the clay targets were hit in a record time of 2.08 seconds. If you count it, it turns out that the combined Raniero/Winchester SX4 produced a rate of fire of 490 rounds per minute – higher than the rate of fire of the M3 “Grease Gun" submachine gun!! Potato Latkes with Alaska Salmon Roe “These little potato cakes called latkes are quick, simple, and versatile. I serve them as a side dish to roasted birds or as a brunch dish topped with eggs and smoked salmon. There are plenty of other uses, but for me the best is the way I had them as a kid. I remember watching my grandmother patiently and lovingly grate potatoes then onions by hand into a bowl. She would crack a few eggs, season with salt and pepper and stir gently so the mixture would just barely assemble. Using a spoon, she would scoop a little batter out and in a well-rehearsed manner, then she would drop them carefully one by one into a hot skillet generously slicked with duck fat. As the cakes sizzled, the intoxicating aromas filled our tiny kitchen. I stood by her side like an untrained puppy panting for his treat. She would give me the very first one, hot, straight out of the pan, unadorned. She would blow on it lovingly so it would not burn my lips and as I took a bite,

Wines to Pair with Fowl Turkey, goose, pheasant? A free-range chicken, or even a capon? The time of the season seems to indicate fowl. We kind of like the idea, since it is out of the ordinary to roast a big bird for a festive feast, the kind of bird that can feed a dozen. With that comes wine challenges, though to say “challenge” is stretching the truth. That truth is almost any wine can match nicely with a big bird roast, plenty of vegetables, maybe a grilled romaine salad with parmesan and homemade croutons. Some choices: Evolve Cellars pinot blanc ($15), almost Alsatian in style with its crispness, but it is distinctively Okanagan as well, with its viscosity and herbal notes, surrounded by delightful stone fruit elements. A sensationally good sparkling wine, the Cipes Blanc de Franc ($45) from Summerhill Pyramid Winery, is a sparkling cabernet franc, which will turn heads, and have people coming back for more, so you may need to have two bottles. It is a delightful, fruit-driven wi

The Best hares hunter in Canada. Lynx is considered to be the very orderly in Canada who brings the number of hares in the region back to normal. No, if a black-tailed deer, duck or mole comes across on the route, the Canadian lynx will definitely challenge them. But from 30 to 97% of the lynx's usual diet consists of hares. Hunting of the Canadian lynx for hares has become a kind of salvation for the locals. Those who have not experienced the rapid uncontrolled spread of hares or rabbits will not understand the essence of the problem. Here it is worth remembering the problem of rabbits in Australia, for example. Where there is no suitable predator, there is a catostrophic increase in the number of rodents and they simply destroy the nature around. Due to the poor diet, the Canadian lynx had to hone its hunting skills to perfection. If a lynx attacks, it means it clearly knows that it will have lunch. If the lynx is not absolutely sure of the result, it will not even attempt a throw

Goats may help prevent wildfires in California as drought worsens The voracious herbivores are being deployed to clear invasive plants throughout wildlands as another catastrophic fire season looms. For the past six years, Alissa Cope’s California company has contracted out goat herds to various clients who need the animals to chow down on unwanted vegetation and invasive plants. “When we got started it was for habitat restoration, and I just got tired of dumping gallons of herbicide on everything,” says Cope, owner of the Sage Environmental Group, a company that specializes in environmental planning with a natural resource focus. “When goats eat the seed, it goes through their digestive tract, and it becomes nonviable. It doesn't grow after it comes out the other end, which is really amazing.”

Hunting in Centre-East: Transitional savannahs, Gourmantché hunting rites, small game, sacred groves, and community-based regulation Windswept grasslands, wooded corridors, and a land of thresholds The Centre-Est Region of Burkina Faso sits between the dry heart of the country and the greener slopes of the east. It is a landscape of open savannahs, scattered forest patches, and low, undulating hills that stretch across provinces like Koulpélogo, Boulgou, and Kouritenga. The Nakambé and Nazinon rivers thread through this terrain, supporting small pockets of biodiversity that persist between farmland and fire-swept bush. While agriculture dominates much of the land, remnant wildlife habitats — sacred groves, seasonal wetlands, and forested village perimeters — still echo with the stories and footpaths of traditional hunters. How Long Will a Benelli Shotgun Last? A Gunsmith’s Perspective on Durability, Round Count & Real-World Longevity When investing in a premium shotgun, longevity is more than a selling point - it’s a promise. And few names carry that promise quite like Benelli. Whether you’re a waterfowler dragging your M2 through flooded timber, a tactical operator relying on the M4, or a clay shooter putting thousands of rounds through a SuperSport, one question inevitably arises: How long will a Benelli shotgun last? Let’s break it down - not with marketing fluff, but with real-world data, mechanical insight, and field-proven experience. 🔧 What Determines Shotgun Longevity? Before we talk numbers, it’s important to understand what affects a shotgun’s lifespan: • Round count (volume of fire) • Maintenance habits • Environmental exposure (saltwater, dust, cold) • Build quality and materials • Design of the action (inertia vs. gas) Benelli’s reputation for durability stems from its inertia-driven

Bear Gun Shootout: The Drill To get a better handle on this debate I enlisted the help of two fellow pistoleros: Sean Murphy, a USPSA Grand Master, and Outdoor Life staff writer Tyler Freel, who by virtue of living in Alaska hunts bears every year. We conducted a live-fire experiment at Gunsite Academy in the form of a simple, but challenging drill. The three of us shot an array of five knockdown steel poppers from far to near to simulate a bear charge. The farthest target was in the center and then we zig-zagged from far left to far right and then to near left and near right to add in erratic motion and increase the stress level. The farthest target was approximately 20 yards away and the closest were about 12 yards downrange. Watch the video above to see the drill for yourself.

Big Game Safaris in Nwoya Uganda: Seasonal Movements and Traditional Tracking Methods The first light of dawn creeps across the vast plains of Nwoya like a slow-moving tide, revealing silhouettes of acacia trees standing as sentinels over the grasslands. Somewhere in the distance, the deep grunt of a Cape buffalo carries through the crisp morning air, while a pair of ground hornbills begin their prehistoric calls. This is Nwoya at daybreak - raw, untamed, and pulsing with life.
