Marine mammals such as whales and pinnipeds are also targets of hunting, both recreationally and commercially, often with heated controversies regarding the morality, ethics and legality of such practices. The pursuit, harvesting or catch and release of fish and aquatic cephalopods and crustaceans is called fishing, which however is widely accepted and not commonly categorised as a form of hunting, even though it essentially is. It is also not considered hunting to pursue animals without intent to kill them, as in wildlife photography, birdwatching, or scientific-research activities which involve tranquilizing or tagging of animals, although green hunting is still called so. The practices of netting or trapping insects and other arthropods for trophy collection, or the foraging or gathering of plants and mushrooms, are also not regarded as hunting.
Hunting in Kasaï-Oriental: Riverine Forests, Traditional Knowledge, and Local Game Diversity
Natural Terrain and Ecological Conditions of Kasaï-Oriental
Kasaï-Oriental, located in the south-central Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a province dominated by broad savannah landscapes, riparian forests, and pockets of miombo woodlands. The Sankuru River and its tributaries cut through the region, forming lush, game-rich corridors that sustain both wildlife and agricultural communities. These ecological zones provide a rich foundation for traditional hunting practices and seasonal bushmeat gathering.
Community Presence and Hunting Demographics
Hunting in Kasaï-Oriental is deeply rooted in local customs. It is practiced mainly by rural villagers, particularly among the Tetela and Luba ethnic groups. These communities hunt primarily for subsistence, passing down skills and conservation wisdom through oral tradition. The region does not host organized safari operations, but its hunting

ZEISS 10x56 T* FL Binoculars Review
In the world of high-performance optics, ZEISS has established a reputation for excellence, and the 10x56 T* FL binoculars are no exception. As an outdoor enthusiast, I have had the opportunity to test these binoculars in a variety of conditions, and I would like to share my thoughts on their performance, design, and value.
Optical Performance:
The first thing that stands out about the ZEISS 10x56 T* FL binoculars is their remarkable optical clarity. The 10x magnification paired with the 56mm objective lens provides an impressive light-gathering capability. This feature allows for exceptional performance in low-light conditions, making these binoculars ideal for dawn and dusk when wildlife is most active. The T* coating enhances light transmission, resulting in bright, vivid colors and sharp images with minimal chromatic aberration.
Throughout my use, I was particularly impressed by the wide field of view, which is crucial for tracking moving ob
Boat Accessories for the Salt Water
Boat-show season was a huge success this year for both the boating industry and its consumers looking for some new boat accessories, like me. It goes without saying that the prior-year pandemic regulations created hardship for places of gathering, whether it was church, classrooms, theaters, restaurants, and yes, trade shows. With these imposed restrictions, outdoor enthusiasts took it in the teeth when it came to Sportsman and Boat Shows. But 2022 showed signs of improvement, breathing air into the oxygen-starved industry. Throughout the Pacific Northwest, what last year was a virtual echo chamber this year was an elbow-to-elbow, bustling free-for-all. Eager outdoor enthusiasts were hungry, and these trade shows helped many turn their dreams to realities, while others better prepared for yet another season of reveries.
If you’re the person that makes that annual journey to your favorite sporting or boat show, you will quickly put together the list
Sytong XM 03-50 LRF Review
I recently had the opportunity to test the Sytong XM 03-50 LRF, and here's my honest assessment of this product.
Firstly, the build quality of the scope is commendable. It feels robust and well-made, able to withstand rough handling in the field. The design is sleek and modern, which is a plus for those who appreciate aesthetics in their gear.
The optics are impressive for the price point. The clarity and brightness of the image are noticeable, even in low-light conditions. The 50mm objective lens does a great job of gathering light, making it suitable for dawn and dusk hunting trips. However, I did find some distortion at the edges at full zoom, which may be a downside for some users.
The integrated laser rangefinder (LRF) is a significant feature that adds value to the XM 03-50. It delivers accurate readings relatively quickly, which is essential for making precise shots. However, I experienced some occasional lag in the reading, especially at longer di
The Lost Art of Hunting
I’ve never been in a hunting situation where my success determined whether or not I got to eat that night, but I’ve been close. When I was in college, I usually had just enough money to buy a burger off the value menu on any given evening. And I was OK with that. The only problem besides being a poor college kid was the fact that I much preferred to put that change toward .22 rimfire cartridges and gas to get to my favorite squirrel hunting woods.
Ryan, Bandit, Squeaky and I would pitch in for a group squirrel-gathering effort at least once a week when the fall season was open. This also gave us a good reason to skip class. After hunting, we’d prepare wild game dinners right there in the little dormitory kitchen. We ate squirrel and dumplings, squirrel and cream of mushroom soup, Cajun-fried squirrel, lemon-pepper squirrel and of course, Kentucky Burgoo. Often as not, we ended up feeding a half-dozen other residents who smelled hot grease and gathered around ou
THE WOLF OF MY DREAMS!!!… The challenges of wolf hunting- you sit there staring into space, in a fog, your mind goes numb, for who knows how long… then all of a sudden, it happens. And when you spot a wolf, or a pack of wolves, your emotions REDLINE!!! You go from a lethargic daze to gasping for air… IT’S WILD!!! Let me tell you the story of this wolf… My friend Mark McKay, Richy and I were climbing in our blind at daybreak. I was sliding my feet into the bottom of my Heater Body Suit and just about to zip it up when I heard someone say, “WOLVES!!!”
Remember the emotions I was telling you about. 🤯🤯🤯… Mark scooted into the blind and informed us he had just seen the whole pack, and they were coming our way! I quietly racked a shell in my Browning 7mm, and gave myself a pep talk about gathering my “chickens!” Eight wolves came into sight!!! They were about 170 yards away down over the ledge of a beaver dam. They held up just barely in a small shooting lane. That’s when I noti
