PICK A SPOT An important but very simple way to make a better shot at a deer is to pick a spot. I used to just shoot at deer rather than shooting at a specific spot on the deer. This was partially because of inexperience and partially because of nerves. Had I incorporated picking a spot into my shot sequence, I would have a few more heads hanging on my wall. Today, when I draw back on a buck, I find a single hair I want my broadhead to split, and I don’t take my eyes off it until my fletchings disappear. Mooching for Deer With the three-hour mooch complete on a recent December morning, our six-pack of deer hunters chewed venison sticks in Doug Duren’s old farmhouse in southwestern Wisconsin and wondered where Duren would send us for the afternoon mooch. Any outsider listening in probably would’ve wondered about something else: “What’s a ‘mooch’ and how does it involve deer hunting?” Good question. Trail camera pictures are only as useful as you make them. At the most basic level, they tell you if nice bucks are around. But what you’re really trying to figure out is where those nice bucks are heading, where they’re coming from, and where they might be vulnerable. To do that, you’ve got to really read the pictures, not just flip through them. For example, look to see if one of your target bucks is hanging out with a bachelor group of smaller bucks.
