MTFWP removes mountain lions from Wild Horse Island State Park Three adult mountain lions were recently removed from Wild Horse Island State Park in Montana. The decision came after the state and tribal officials deemed the animals a “public safety issue due to the high density and habituation,” according to KRTV News. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MTFWP) worked in collaboration with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) after receiving reports from both landowners and visitors. The island, which is 2,163 acres, is located on the south end of Flathead Lake. Both MTFWP and CKST worried that their presence would impact “one of the nation’s most important conservation herds of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep.” Because of how the island is situated, bighorn sheep have no escape route from the mountain lions. “Alongside prioritizing public safety, we felt it was important to protect one of the few disease-free bighorn sheep herds because of the role it plays in the greatPost: 22 March 10:23

🦆 Duck Call Trials in the Marsh 🦆 Spent the morning knee-deep in the reeds testing out a few different duck calls. From double reeds to acrylic hand-tuned beauties - each one had its moment. Some brought curious gliders swooping in low, others just got me strange looks from a heron. 😂 Still, nothing beats the thrill when the right tone pulls them in like a magnet. The season’s shaping up nicely - just need to decide which call gets the honor of staying in my pack. Why did the Americans try to destroy the bison population? The near-destruction of the American bison (or buffalo) population in the 19th century was not an accidental or random event but rather a deliberate and systematic effort driven by multiple factors, many of which were tied to the U.S. government's broader policies toward Native Americans. The bison were central to the lives, cultures, and economies of many Plains Indigenous tribes, and their destruction was seen as a way to weaken Native resistance and force assimilation into Euro-American society. Key Reasons for the Destruction of the Bison: 1. Undermining Native American Resistance: - The bison were essential to the survival and way of life for many Plains tribes, including the Lakota, Cheyenne, Comanche, and others. These tribes relied on bison for food, clothing, shelter, tools, and spiritual practices. - By destroying the bison herds, the U.S. government and settlers sought to undermine the ability of Native AmerPost: 5 March 17:37

Creating a Tribal Restoration Workforce The rain slowly fell on a cool May morning as a small crowd of people gathered in a pullout alongside an old logging road in Ketchikan. The blend of official U.S. Forest Service vehicles and uniforms intermixed with private vehicles and casual clothes gave a clue to the diversity of people in attendance. The crowd was comprised of varied backgrounds and employers. Tribal members, hydrologists, fisheries biologists, chainsaw crews, and various staff were all there for one thing: to teach and learn the skills necessary to restore streams and improve fish habitat in the Tongass National Forest. In the summer of 2021, the Forest Service announced their plan to move away from large scale, old-growth logging in the Tongass and instead invest in restoration, recreation, and forest resilience. This new strategy is welcome news on the Tongass, which is part of the largest intact temperate rainforest on the planet, and the robust tourism economy and subsPost: 1 November 10:14

Lyme disease: Final trial ends 20-year wait for a vaccine against the tick-borne disease How does the Lyme vaccine work? It targets an "outer surface protein" of the Lyme bacterium called OspA that’s present in the tick’s gut. It’s estimated a tick must feed on someone for about 36 hours before the bacteria spreads to its victim. That delay gives time for antibodies the tick ingests from a vaccinated person’s blood to attack the germs right at the source. In small, early-stage studies, Pfizer and Valneva reported no safety problems and a good immune response. The newest study will test if the vaccine, called VLA15, really protects and is safe. The companies aim to recruit at least 6,000 people in Lyme-prone areas including the northeast US plus Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden.Post: 12 August 18:11

Montana judge to issue decision on wolf hunting and trapping Montana hunters and trappers await a decision that should come sometime this week as a temporary restraining order that immediately changed the state’s wolf season expires today. District Court Judge Chris Abbot issued the restraining order earlier this month that applied to Lewis and Clark counties. The order suspended the state’s regulations, which allowed for expanded wolf hunting and trapping. On Monday, Abbott heard testimony regarding the issue. He said he would decide today whether the temporary limits placed on wolf hunting should continue or if the quotas and hunting methods “pending a trial over changes in the way the state estimates the size of the wolf population” to inform hunting quotas should continue, according to the Associated Press. In October, WildEarth Guardians and Project Coyote filed a lawsuit, alleging that Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (Montana FWP) and the Montana Fish and Wildlife CommissioPost: 30 November 16:49
5 Off-Season Treestand Safety Reminders Do You Follow These Safety Rules? The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is reminding hunters to give some thought to hunting safety, especially for treestands during the off-season. It may seem counterintuitive at this time of year, but treestand safety is important at times other than hunting season. "Unfortunately, every year there are a number of treestand accidents with injury before deer season even opens," said Travis Casper. "We need hunters to think about and practice treestand safety all the time, not just during hunting season." If you are scouting a location and putting up your treestand, even on a trial basis, use the same precautions you would during hunting season: Wear a full-body safety harness. Use a lifeline or lineman's belt to stay connected when you're off the ground. Maintain three points of contact when climbing. Follow manufacturer instructions. Have an emergency signal and tell someone where you plan to go. ThePost: 13 July 11:17

Some states around the country present a more perilous scenario for such interactions, while others provide less. Ways to prevent and treat snake bites, shared courtesy of Purina Pro Plan, follow: 1. Know Before You Go Familiarize yourself with the types of snakes native to the area in which you live or are traveling to for a hunt or field trial. Learn which species of venomous snakes are present, the habitats they prefer, and their “personalities.” 2. Snakeproof Your Dog Although you can’t completely eliminate the risk of a snakebite, you can prepare your dog to react to an offensive strike by enrolling him or her in a snake-avoidance clinic. This training conditions a dog to give any snake he or she encounters via sight, smell or sound the widestPost: 19 July 10:37
