Hardware: Colt Anaconda by Dick Williams - Monday, November 15, 2021 Hardware: Colt Anaconda For some folks, the sight of a scoped bolt-action rifle or elegant over/under shotgun instantly makes them think of hunting. Choose the Best Knife for Deer Hunting Should you go with a fixed-blade or a folder? A lifelong deer hunter weighs in with his preferences You can gut and skin a buck with a penknife or a Bowie or any blade in between, but to do the job right, select a tool designed with the deer hunter in mind. Fixed Blade with Gut-Hook If you haven’t tried a fixed-blade knife with a gut-hook, you should. Roll a buck onto his back and use the knife point to make a small incision in the white hair and abdominal wall of the lower belly. Turn the knife over, insert the sharp hook into the slit and zipper the animal open up to the sternum. With a hook, there’s no exposed steel tip to pierce a deer’s paunch and make a mess, or clip your finger. These days it’s vital that you stay knick-free. A Michigan hunter recently was infected with bovine tuberculosis after he sliced his hand while dressing a buck, and there are other deer diseases out there. Be careful and wear rubber gloves. Once you’ve finished the Post: 8 June 17:44
CHOOSING THE RIGHT HUNTING KNIFE 1. CLIP POINT KNIFE The tip on this knife curves upward and allows you to pierce the hide and cut a pattern. The pattern is the initial cut you make down each leg and up the belly before removing the skin. You can skin your animal with this knife but the shape of the blade tends to cut holes in the hide while skinning. This particular knife is a folding model, easy to carry in a pocket. 2. DROP POINT KNIFE This is your skinning knife. You’ll notice the tip doesn’t sweep upwards like a clip point knife. A drop point knife is less likely to accidentally poke through the hide. You can skin faster, without being as careful. Also notice the blade length. You don’t want too much blade on a skinning knife, it will just get in the way. This little knife has skinned an entire elk on more than one occasion. 3. CAPING KNIFE If you’re going to keep the hide or mount the head you’ll want a caping knife. A caping knife has a shorter, narrower blade with a distinctPost: 12 December 17:52

25 Tips for Dove Hunters 1. Pick the Right Gun Dove hunting is supposed to be fun, and if you enjoy shooting family heirlooms or featherlight .410s at doves, who am I to tell you not to? But if your idea of fun is hitting more doves, choose a 12- or 20-gauge with some heft and at least a 28-inch barrel. A longer, heavier gun swings smoothly, points surely and soaks up recoil. The best dove shooting I did this past year was with a 12-gauge sporting clays gun. 2. Stock Up On Shells Ammunition is available again, and there’s no reason to run out opening day, which I have actually done. Begging shells from people in the field is just embarrassing. Field or target loads of Nos. 7½ or 8 lead or 6 or 7 steel work. Steel loads kill fine, by the way. Lighter loads, with less shot and lower velocities, kick a lot less than heavy, high-speed stuff, and you will shoot a lot in no more padding than a T-shirt. Be sure your ammo will cycle your semi-auto, but other than that, lighter is better. 3. Post: 16 September 11:13

The Ruger American made this list for a specific reason: it represents today’s budget-priced hunting rifles, built using innovative methods to keep costs down and performance high. Though made primarily from investment cast steel and synthetic parts, the American is an accurate and useful tool for putting meat on the table. I’ve tested two examples and ended-up buying one of them. Two of the keys to the American’s performance are the three-lug bolt and v-block bedding arrangement, both of which contribute to its accuracy. Available in several different configurations and chambered in everything from .223 to 30-06, there’s an American for everyone’s needs.Post: 20 September 10:47
ORANGE IS A NEW BLACK Stay safe when hunting by following these tips: -Check weather reports before embarking on a hunting trip. -Tell someone where you will be hunting and when you will return. -Be familiar with the area you want to hunt. Bring a map and compass. -Carry a basic survival kit and be prepared for an unexpected overnight stay in the field. The survival kit should contain a rope, a knife, water, waterproof matches, an emergency shelter, and first aid supplies. -Dress properly and be prepared for the worst possible conditions. -Wear hunter orange as your outermost gear so that you are visible to other hunters. Do not wear white or tan during deer season. -Always treat your weapon as if it is loaded, even if it isn't, and know where your hunter partners are located at all times. -If accompanied by a dog, the dog should also wear hunter orange or a very visible color on a vest, leash, coat or bandana. Check the state regulations to determine if a dog is allowed on a hunt. -Post: 19 May 11:46
A hunter with his hunting fox. Canada, 1942. There is no historical evidence that foxes were used as hunting companions in Canada during the 1940s—or at any time in Canadian history. Unlike dogs, falcons, or even horses, foxes were not domesticated or trained for cooperative hunting in North America, including by Indigenous peoples or European settlers. Foxes in Canada were primarily associated with the fur trade, not hunting partnerships. The country had a well-established fur industry, and fox farming—especially for silver, red, and Arctic foxes—was a significant rural enterprise, particularly in the Canadian Maritimes, the Prairies, and the North. Fur farms proliferated in the early 20th century, peaking in the 1920s–1940s, when luxurious fox fur coats were in high demand in Europe and the United States. Wild foxes were trapped for their pelts, often using steel leg-hold traps or snares. Trappers—many of them Indigenous or Métis, or non-Indigenous residents of remote regions—reliPost: 3 October 17:35
