Taxidermy, the intricate art of preserving animal specimens, has long captivated the hearts of hunters and nature enthusiasts alike. Among the bounty of the wilderness, the capercaillie and the black grouse stand out as regal representatives of avian wildlife, emblematic of the untamed forests they inhabit. Their vibrant plumage and majestic postures become timeless reminders of the beauty of nature when preserved through taxidermy. The process itself is both an art and a science, requiring a deft touch and keen understanding of anatomy. Each step, from skinning to mounting, is meticulously executed to ensure the resulting display is a lifelike homage to the creature's former existence. Hunters often seek to immortalize their trophies, capturing the essence of the hunt and the thrill of the chase. Fox Foxes are small to medium-sized, omnivorous mammals belonging to several genera of the family Canidae. They have a flattened skull, upright, triangular ears, a pointed, slightly upturned snout, and a long bushy tail (or brush). Twelve species belong to the monophyletic "true foxes" group of genus Vulpes. Approximately another 25 current or extinct species are always or sometimes called foxes; these foxes are either part of the paraphyletic group of the South American foxes, or of the outlying group, which consists of the bat-eared fox, gray fox, and island fox. Foxes live on every continent except Antarctica. The most common and widespread species of fox is the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) with about 47 recognized subspecies. The global distribution of foxes, together with their widespread reputation for cunning, has contributed to their prominence in popular culture and folklore in many societies around the world. Bull Riding Rat Taxidermy Creating a Bull Riding Rat taxidermy piece involves a blend of creativity and traditional taxidermy techniques. Here's a simplified process: Preparation: First, a rat specimen is carefully skinned, and the hide is preserved through tanning to prevent decay and maintain its shape. Form Creation: A custom form or mannequin is created to fit the rat's size and pose. For this unique piece, the form would be adjusted to make the rat appear as if it's riding a small model bull. Mounting the Hide: The preserved rat hide is carefully fitted over the form. The taxidermist stitches it in place, ensuring a natural look and proper alignment of the fur. Detailing: The rat's eyes, ears, and facial features are carefully crafted and positioned for a lifelike appearance. The pose is fine-tuned to make it look like the rat is actively riding the bull. Bull Model: A miniature bull model is prepared, either crafted from scratch or purchased. The model is detailed to match aPost: 5 August 09:13

Today, I had a very special encounter at sunrise: I managed to spot and photograph a cross fox. They are a melanistic color variation of the red fox. It’s a very, very rare sight. A few years ago, a study in Scandinavia examined 3,000 red foxes, and only 0.3% of them had this melanistic variation. In recent years, I’ve seen a few of them around Abisko. Fox Hunting in Britain Fox hunting has been occurring in different guises worldwide for hundreds of years. Indeed the practise of using dogs with a keen sense of smell to track prey has been traced back to ancient Egypt and many Greek and Roman influenced countries. However it is believed that the custom for a fox to be tracked, chased and often killed by trained hunting hounds (generally those with the keenest sense of smell known as ‘scent hounds’) and followed by the Master of the Foxhounds and his team on foot and horseback, originated from a Norfolk farmer’s attempt to catch a fox using farm dogs in 1534. Whilst foxes were widely regarded as vermin and farmers and other landowners had hunted the animals for many years as a form of pest control (both to curb their attacks on farm animals and for their highly prized fur) it wasn’t until the eighteenth century that fox hunting developed into it’s most modern incarnation and was considered a sport in its own right as a result of thePost: 26 May 12:32

Another shot of the fox I photographed yesterday while driving on Farmer's Loop here in Fairbanks. If you look closely, you can see it's frosty breath around it's muzzle. It's in the exact same spot as the other shot with the exception of the head position. I thought it was a crossfox, but I've had one person say may be a silverfox, and another friend say a melanistic red fox, which is a broad term to mean a red fox with a non standard coloration. I've seen a few non-standard foxes in the East Fairbanks area that I suspect are related, this one included. All within about a six mile radius of each other. This is an area large enough that they are not the same individual, but may be family members.Post: 17 October 17:47
