Hunting dog survives 50-foot fall into well, rescued by Texas game wardens Maria, a bird dog, was chasing an injured quail when she went missing. Texas game wardens had to get a bit creative while rescuing a hunting dog name Maria who found herself lost at the bottom of a well in South Texas during a recent hunting trip. According to the game wardens blotter, during the course of the quail hunt on a property in Jim Hogg County, Maria had chased an injured bird through a thicket and didn't return, which worried her owners. They began an immediate search and eventually found her trapped about 50 feet down at the bottom of a well on the property. Game wardens in Jim Hogg County, typically tasked with enforcing the state's hunting and wildlife laws, were quick to arrive and used a makeshift pulley system to lower a kennel to the bottom. Inside the kennel, they placed hunted quail to entice Maria inside, wardens said. After some time, the pup eventually moved into the crate. Maria wa

Texas The second largest U.S. state, Texas covers an astounding 171,891,725 acres (Source: Beef 2 Live). Often thought of by outsiders as one giant desert, the Lone Star State is actually very eco-diverse. In fact, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department recognizes 10 different eco-regions within the state. I recently discussed Texas’s deer herd and hunting opportunities with Alan Cain, White-tailed Deer Program Leader with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. Not all states project whitetail-population estimates, but Texas does. “We have an estimated 5.4 million white-tailed deer,” Cain said. “This number is based on regulatory deer surveys that our biologists annually conduct throughout the state. Central Texas has the state’s highest deer densities. This area is known as the Edwards Plateau eco-region, also commonly referred to as the Hill Country. Specifically, Deer Management Unit (DMU) 6 around Llano and Mason Counties has the highest density at an estimated 265 deer per 1,00

Helicopter Hog Hunting in Texas: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Adventure In the heart of Texas, where the horizon stretches endlessly and the land is as wild as the game that roams it, a new breed of hunting experience is taking flight—literally. Helicopter hog hunting has become one of the most thrilling and effective ways to combat one of America’s most destructive invasive species: the feral hog. Recently, French huntress and outdoor influencer @johannaclermont took to the skies with @chasseautexas_com, capturing the essence of this adrenaline-fueled adventure. Her words say it all: “Just like in France, wild boars wreak havoc on farmland, but in the United States, the scale is staggering: over $2.5 billion in damage each year. In a country this vast, managing their population sometimes means taking to the skies.” 🐗 The Wild Boar Crisis in the U.S. Feral hogs—also known as wild boars—are not just a nuisance; they’re a national problem. With an estimated population exceeding 6 million, t

By Frank Gentile, Hopewell, N.Y. It was October 2011, and I was back in my Chevy Tahoe on my way to another hunt. This time, instead of my son, I was traveling with my hunting buddies. My buddies and I had been on plenty of trips together before but never to Texas! Between the four of us and gear for six (two of our team opted to fly from New York to San Antonio), every single spare inch of space in the truck had been utilized. With each of us taking turns driving, we made it to Texas in about 20 hours. We got dinner and hotel rooms in Texarkana, and were back on the road early the next morning. With a day to spare before we were due at our hunting camp in Hondo, Texas, we headed south with plans to enjoy the city of San Antonio along the way. In San Antonio, we explored the Alamo, the River Walk and the Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum. What a great city! Our first order of business after arriving at the camp the next morning was to make sure that our rifles were on target.

Picking the Best Rifle and Caliber for Pig Hunting Do you need a magnum setup or a fast-shooting semi-auto? Probably, your deer rifle will work just fine Pig Reality There’s a reason gun nuts love pig hunting. In southern states like Texas and Florida, hogs aren’t subject to many game laws, which means you can hunt them with about whatever you please. If you have a magnum rifle that never sees the light of day because, after buying it, you realized cracked clavicles are no fun at all, you can use it on pigs. In fact, some of the advice out there suggests that you need a really big gun for hog hunting, because you never know when a true Hogzilla might make an appearance. On the other hand, plenty of would-be hog hunters show up with high-capacity semi-autos and visions of a mag dump against a marauding horde of pork. Those rifles are fun to shoot and plenty accurate enough, but unless you’re shooting from a helicopter, they rarely give you much of an advantage while pig hunting. Tru

5 Snow Goose Stops You’ve Never Tried Chasing spring snow geese is one of the fastest growing pursuits in hunting, and with good reason. The most obvious of its attractions are the tens of millions of birds that string out from Texas to the Canadian tundra and from the coast of California to the Eastern Shore. But as the spring migration has ballooned, so has the hunting competition. Meanwhile, it takes plenty of gear and cash to get into the game: e-callers, massive decoy rigs, pallets of ammunition and gasoline for finding fresh birds for the next day’s flight. You might wonder why we go to the trouble. But if you spend one day under twisting white flocks with 10 shotgun shells in an extension magazine before you run it to the plug again and again, you’ll understand. Arkansas, Missouri and South Dakota are the hotbeds for chasing the reverse migration, but a few places are still devoid of big crowds, no matter if you’re a do-it-yourself or pay-to-play hunter. These days there are very few new products that I would actually call a “game changer.” Many are truthfully nothing more than a twist on an old idea or a slight improvement over something already available. When I first saw the new Primos Double Bull SurroundView hunting blinds at the January trade shows, I instantly said to myself, “game changer.” When I was able to hunt Axis deer in south Texas from one with a rifle in June, my opinion didn’t change. Since then I’ve had one at home and have been playing with it a lot in anticipation of some summer bow hunts. All I can say is, it’s something else. If you’re familiar with Double Bull pop-up blinds, then you need no convincing of their ruggedness and an interior configuration that's design is one that's well thought-out by hunters. My only beef with Double Bull blinds over the years is that, while their hub-and-pole system makes them solid as a rock once erected, putting up and taking the blinds down can be a bit of a challenge until
