I was taking a hike up a centennial 13er in the San Juans on Tuesday morning and was, uh, surprised to meet up with a couple of female moose on my path up. We had a stand off for about 5 minutes when it was clear at least one of them was NOT getting off the path. I had to bushwhack up the side of the mountain about 30 yards and make my way by them. THEN, as I was coming home late that afternoon? I met HIM about a mile from my car. How lucky can one guy get? It’s a spooky feeling when there’s nothing between you and them except empty space. The moon was so bright that morning. And I ran into this cabin on the way up and down. Someone has put some money into it because the roof is metal and newish. The rafters and main beams inside are also newish. Heck, one of the joist hangers even has price tag on it. I just happened to be sitting in the cabin on my way back to my car when I heard what sounded like an explosion and a lot of rockfall. Setting up along an obvious trail—that move proved to be the best decision we made on the entire trip. As we waited to fly the meat out, we glassed up a large grizzly—a bonus opportunity after an already successful hunt. Day 2 of 5. Oklahoma. I packed up camp on the lake and headed to the river. The water was all the way up to 52 degrees after being in the low 30s the week before! I setup on a deep hole (20ft. deep) with a big inside eddy. I caught a 3 pound dinner cat within 2 minutes of setting up, then another small fish 2 minutes after that, then this surprise January Flathead about 5 minutes later! 3 fish within the first 15 minutes was a great start then it died down. After a couple hours and some missed bites I put 2 rods on the downstream side of the hole in about 6 feet of water and shortly after I got a good blue! I had fried catfish for dinner and slept like a baby with no bites the rest of the night. I love camping on the river and not just observing wildlife but being apart of it. PHEASANT (COMMON) A large, long-tailed game bird. Males have rich chestnut, golden-brown and black markings on body and tail, with a dark green head and red face wattling. It flies fast and in a rolling countryside it is a very difficult bird to shoot. In some of our hunting estates there are also some Reeve’s pheasant. This boldly patterned pheasant is instantly recognizable, having some of the longest tail feathers of any bird species. The male has bright golden-chestnut upper parts, with black borders to each feather creating a strongly scaled appearance, while the upper breast is darker chestnut to black, and the lower breast and side feathers are white, tipped in black. Even though the U.S. Department of Agriculture has now reversed its ill-timed Sept. 2 ban on importing game birds taken in Canada, waterfowl hunters throughout North America could still be impacted by the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza in migratory game birds during the coming months. Following a new ruling issued by the USDA on Sept. 12, American hunters are allowed to bring game bird meat back from Canada, but the birds must be cleaned, stored and transported as follows (which is different than how many people field-dress waterfowl): Viscera (innards), head, neck, feet, skin and one wing must be removed.
