A hunter with his hunting fox. Canada, 1942. There is no historical evidence that foxes were used as hunting companions in Canada during the 1940s—or at any time in Canadian history. Unlike dogs, falcons, or even horses, foxes were not domesticated or trained for cooperative hunting in North America, including by Indigenous peoples or European settlers. Foxes in Canada were primarily associated with the fur trade, not hunting partnerships. The country had a well-established fur industry, and fox farming—especially for silver, red, and Arctic foxes—was a significant rural enterprise, particularly in the Canadian Maritimes, the Prairies, and the North. Fur farms proliferated in the early 20th century, peaking in the 1920s–1940s, when luxurious fox fur coats were in high demand in Europe and the United States. Wild foxes were trapped for their pelts, often using steel leg-hold traps or snares. Trappers—many of them Indigenous or Métis, or non-Indigenous residents of remote regions—reli

SOUTH DAKOTA RANCHERS UPSET OVER NUMBER OF ELK CONTINGENCY LICENSES South Dakota ranchers are angry over the number of elk contingency licenses recently issued across four units, especially because they were involved in the creation of the new elk management plan in 2015. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (SDGFP) announced this week that there would be 20 of these licenses in units that span both public and private property, the Black Hills Pioneer reports. The elk contingency licenses are used to “reduce the elk population in areas that have been heavily affected by drought,” said Andrew Norton, SDGFP senior big game biologist. There is not set location for where these licenses are issued. Basically, it’s based upon where the elk are “relative to the department’s objective” so that the elk population can be reduced “in order to improve grazing conditions on forest service land that ranchers lease.” Yet, Aaron Thompson, president of the Spearfish Livestock Association, Eric Jenning

Wyoming reduces number of mule deer and antelope tags There will be fewer tags for Wyoming mule deer and antelope this year. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) decided to reduce the number of tags due to disease and drought, according to Wyoming Public Radio. EHD, or blue tongue, has impacted herds and continuing drought means more competition for available forage. Ian Tator, WGFD’s terrestrial habitat manager, says that “elk will out compete mule deer and [antelope] for vegetation.” “We had an outbreak of blue tongue this last summer, which just means there are that many less animals available,” says Tator. “If those animals aren't there to begin with, we're not going to issue licenses for them.” This means that WGFD will cut the number of antelope licenses by 8,000 and mule deer licenses by 3,300 for the 2022 hunting season. However, there will be an increase in elk tags, which Tator hopes will “give the mule deer and [antelope] populations a chance to grow.” “We're trying t

Wisconsin deer hunt's underwhelming opening weekend blamed on warm weather, lack of snow Over 11,000 fewer deer killed in WI this year compared to 2022 A lack of snow and warm temperatures that suppressed deer movement led to a lackluster opening weekend of Wisconsin's nine-day gun season, with hunters killing thousands fewer deer than last year. The state Department of Natural Resources released preliminary data Tuesday that showed hunters registered 92,050 deer compared with 103,623 deer last year. That's a 16% drop-off from 2022 and 10% fewer deer than the five-year average for opening weekend. Hunters also registered 51,870 bucks, down 13% from 56,638 over opening weekend in 2022. The number of potential hunters didn't vary much from last year, however. The DNR reported that sales of all deer licenses stood at 774,369 as of midnight Sunday, with 421,525 of those licenses exclusively for gun use. Overall, sales of all deer licenses were down 0.61% from the same time last year. W

The issue of feral pigs in California Pigs don't naturally exist in North America. These animals were introduced by explorers as a food source. Several hundreds of years later, they have become a major problem for ecosystems across the United States. Similar to the feral horse issue facing the western United States, California finds itself needing to take action or face seemingly exponential financial losses in crops, property damage, and dwindling populations of native ground-nesting birds. Currently, pigs can be hunted in the Golden State as a game species. The cost of hunting pigs in California will run residents $25.10 for the tag and $52.66 for the annual big game hunting license. For nonresidents, the tag cost is $84.50 and $183.60 for the license. During the 2020 – 2021 feral pig season, 53,923 tags were sold with 1,000 of those being nonresident tags, representing an overall increase of 13.5% compared to the year previous. With only 3,950 animals successfully harvested, there

Hunting regulations Czech Republic For hunting in the Czech Republic you need a Czech hunting license (please bring your own valid hunting license from your country too) and a hunting liability insurance from the Czech Insurance Office. Both are organized by our partner for you. Export of trophies The trophies for game caught in the Czech Republic may be imported into EU without any problems. Traceability can be required by the EU authorities at any time, e.g. the hunter must be able to prove where the game was killed. This is the hunting protocol which is created at the end of the hunt. Small game hunting Our partner has been dedicated to small game hunting for years and organizes hunts for pheasants, royal pheasants, wild turkeys and red chickens. All the hunts take place in the hunting area Kakov. Our hunting area with a size of 600ha is located on the edge of the Planice ridge, about 40 km from the city of Pilsen, near the small town Nepomuk between the villages Polanka and Pohor

Wolf hunting is the practice of hunting wolves. Wolves are mainly hunted for sport, for their skins, to protect livestock and, in some rare cases, to protect humans. Wolves have been actively hunted since 8,000 to 10,000 years ago, when they first began to pose a threat to livestock of Neolithic human communities. Historically, the hunting of wolves was a huge capital- and manpower-intensive operation. The threat wolves posed to both livestock and people was considered significant enough to warrant the conscription of whole villages under threat of punishment, despite the disruption of economic activities and reduced taxes. The hunting of gray wolves, while originally actively endorsed in many countries, has become a controversial issue across the globe. Most people see it as cruel, unnecessary and based on misconceptions, while proponents argue that it is apparently vital for the conservation of game herds and as pest control.
