African Wildcat (Africa) Felis silvestris lybica DESCRIPTION (male) Head and body length 21-26 inches (545-665 mm). Tail 11-14 inches (275-360 mm). Weight 9-14 pounds (4-6 kg). (female) Head & body length 18-24 inches (460-620 mm). Tail 10-14 inches (255-355 mm). Weight 5-11 pounds (2.3-5.0 kg). Females have four pairs of teats. The African wildcat is generally recognized as the ancestor of the domestic cat (Felis catus) and often interbreeds with it. The two species are similar in size and appearance and can be difficult to identify in the field; however, there are two features that distinguish purebred wildcats from domestic cats and hybrids. In the wildcat, the backs of the ears are a rich reddish-brown, while domestic cats and hybrids usually have dark gray or black-backed ears, with perhaps a little red. A second feature is the wildcat's long legs. When a wildcat sits upright, its long front legs raise the body almost to the vertical, a position that is nearly impossible for domePost: 30 June 15:41

Pheasant shoots scaled back across UK after bird flu import bans Pheasant shoots across the UK are being shut down or dramatically scaled back this year because of import bans on the birds after an outbreak of bird flu. A huge number of the gamebirds shot in the country are imported from factory farms in Europe. Experts have said this practice should stop or be reduced because it risks spreading disease and has troubling implications for native nature and biodiversity. Just under 50 million pheasants are usually released each year from continental farms. A recent study suggested that at their peak in August each year, non-native common pheasants and red-legged partridges make up about half of all wild bird biomass in Britain. The annual shooting season begins on 1 October. Jeff Knott, the central and eastern England director at the RSPB, said: “The most important thing from our perspective is the bird flu situation underlines the risks of importing and releasing millions of birds iPost: 12 July 18:26

SOUTH DAKOTA RANCHERS UPSET OVER NUMBER OF ELK CONTINGENCY LICENSES South Dakota ranchers are angry over the number of elk contingency licenses recently issued across four units, especially because they were involved in the creation of the new elk management plan in 2015. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (SDGFP) announced this week that there would be 20 of these licenses in units that span both public and private property, the Black Hills Pioneer reports. The elk contingency licenses are used to “reduce the elk population in areas that have been heavily affected by drought,” said Andrew Norton, SDGFP senior big game biologist. There is not set location for where these licenses are issued. Basically, it’s based upon where the elk are “relative to the department’s objective” so that the elk population can be reduced “in order to improve grazing conditions on forest service land that ranchers lease.” Yet, Aaron Thompson, president of the Spearfish Livestock Association, Eric JenningPost: 17 September 18:08
Hunting Can Be Good for Wildlife Populations – If Managed Correctly. This may sound counterintuitive, but reducing the number of animals in a population can help the remaining individuals to survive through the winter. “Harvesting or other means of regulating an animal population can sometimes have a positive effect by reducing the competition for food,” says Bart Peeters, a postdoctoral fellow at NTNU’s (the Norwegian University of Science and Technology) Department of Biology. This only makes sense for species limited by food availability. The results of the study have been published in the journal Ecology Letters and could prove useful in managing various species.Post: 1 March 15:16

Today, I had a very special encounter at sunrise: I managed to spot and photograph a cross fox. They are a melanistic color variation of the red fox. It’s a very, very rare sight. A few years ago, a study in Scandinavia examined 3,000 red foxes, and only 0.3% of them had this melanistic variation. In recent years, I’ve seen a few of them around Abisko. We travel to the beautiful Rincon de Luna Lodge in the Cordoba province of Argentina, as we takes on the rocky terrain in the mountains on the hunt for the beautiful Red Stag. The land here is particularly treacherous as the team needs to climb great heights as well as traverse over difficult and often unknown terrain. Red Stag’s are typically known as being a challenging yet thoroughly exciting hunt. Though difficult, the shoot is incredibly enjoyable and breathtakingly beautiful set against the stunning backdrop of Cordoba, Argentina.Post: 5 April 10:16

Scottish Deerhound Hunting Dog: Traits, Training, and Global Use in the Field The Scottish Deerhound is a legendary hunting breed revered for its grace, endurance, and noble demeanor. Originally bred in the rugged Highlands of Scotland, this sighthound was designed to pursue and bring down large game—most notably the red deer. Today, while its role has evolved, the Deerhound remains a capable and respected hunting companion in various parts of the world. 🦌 What Game Can the Scottish Deerhound Hunt? Historically, the Scottish Deerhound was bred to course red deer, a task requiring immense speed, stamina, and precision. Its long legs and deep chest allow for powerful strides and sustained chases over uneven terrain. While modern hunting practices have shifted, Deerhounds still retain their instinctual drive and physical capability to pursue: • Red deer and fallow deer (traditional quarry in Scotland and parts of Europe) • Coyotes and wolves (used in North America historically) • WilPost: 21 July 18:16
Post: 27 November 09:57

Wyoming reduces number of mule deer and antelope tags There will be fewer tags for Wyoming mule deer and antelope this year. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) decided to reduce the number of tags due to disease and drought, according to Wyoming Public Radio. EHD, or blue tongue, has impacted herds and continuing drought means more competition for available forage. Ian Tator, WGFD’s terrestrial habitat manager, says that “elk will out compete mule deer and [antelope] for vegetation.” “We had an outbreak of blue tongue this last summer, which just means there are that many less animals available,” says Tator. “If those animals aren't there to begin with, we're not going to issue licenses for them.” This means that WGFD will cut the number of antelope licenses by 8,000 and mule deer licenses by 3,300 for the 2022 hunting season. However, there will be an increase in elk tags, which Tator hopes will “give the mule deer and [antelope] populations a chance to grow.” “We're trying tPost: 16 May 09:38
