Big Game Hunting Hunting in Africa Big Game - is for many the very essence of hunting in Africa. Big Game does not just mean big animals, but big challenges and experiences. Technically speaking by far the most hunting in Africa is actually Big Game Hunting. Even many species of antilope are actually classed as big game. However if is first and foremost The Big Five, that one thinks about when the conversation turns to big game hunting. Lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhinoceros have been the great attraction for Big Game hunters travelling to Africa on safari for centuries, and they still are. While it is true that hunting for rhino is perhaps not once what it once was, as today this species is highly protected and surrounded by a great deal of security, the remaining species can still be hunted in the wild African bush - with all the wonderful experiences that this brings with it. Generally speaking it is only in the areas where hunting outfitters operate that the increasing lev

Salvador Dali and the rhinoceros. 1956 Photo by Philip Halsman Dalí was interested in the rhinoceros; he considered the horn a perfect logarithmic spiral; the perfect form present in nature. In the painting, Dalí noticed a series of ‘cones’. that he identified as horns. As he says in his dairy “The Lacemakers is morphologically the horn of a rhinoceros” (Diary of a Genius). Finally he’d found the connection between the girl in Vermeer’s painting and the rhinoceros. Rhinocéros en désintégration is a remarkable watercolour painted by Salvador Dalí in 1950 that invokes several of the key themes in the artist’s work of the immediate post-war era. Centring on the image of a rhinoceros suspended in space and in the process of disintegrating under the mystical spell of a divine, heavenly being, the work is an invocation of the new personal form of mysticism that Dalí was to outline one year later in his ‘Mystical Manifesto’ of 1951. It had been around the time that Dalí painted Rhinocéro

9 Ways to Ruin Your Outfitted Hunt A multi-thousand-dollar hunt is something to take seriously while still enjoying a great time. Here’s how to behave yourself Outfitted hunts can be very exciting. I’ve done several of them, and most were with salt-of-the-earth folks who respected one another and had a great time. But I’ve shared a couple of camps with chest-thumping types who cussed and drank more than they hunted. It ruined an otherwise great atmosphere. Have you ever been on an outfitted hunt and experienced someone or several people acting foolishly? Did it negatively affect your hunt time in camp? For that matter, have you been the annoying or disrespectful guy or gal in camp? You want to have a good time on an outfitted hunt, but it’s important to follow some common-sense guidelines, too. These are some of the big ones. 1. Keeping Others Awake After traveling a great distance and paying thousands, who wants to be kept awake by someone is talking loudly and slamming doors? Out

In Horn of the Hunter, Robert Ruark describes two Cape buffalo he took on his first safari, in 1951, in (then) Tanganyika with Harry Selby. The first was wounded and gave the pair a hell of a time until he finally succumbed. The second, which had much bigger and more massive horns, was also wounded, and disappeared into a dense thicket. Selby and Ruark looked at each other, then sat down to smoke a cigarette. As the minutes wore on, Ruark became more and more anxious about what was to come. Then Selby invited him to accompany him as he went after the buffalo — a serious compliment as you know if you’ve ever been in that situation. Ruark steeled himself, checked his .470, and off they went. The tracking took some time. It probably seemed much longer than it was, but that’s the way these things work, as they crept along, expecting a charge at any second.

Alaska’s Dall Sheep Alaska’s Dall sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) are found in relatively dry alpine country and frequent a special combination of open ridges, meadows and steep slopes with extremely rugged “escape terrain” in the immediate vicinity. Generally known to be high-country animals, they also sometimes occur in rocky gorges below timberline. Rams, distinguished by massive curling horns, usually weigh less than 300 pounds, while ewes, with shorter, more slender, slightly curved horns, typically reach only half that size. As the remoteness of their habitat and its unsuitability for human use does much to protect the species, Dall sheep in Alaska are generally in good population health, even though low birth rates, predation (primarily by wolves, coyotes, and eagles), and a difficult environment tend to keep growth rates lower than for many other big-game species. However, their adaptation to the alpine environment seems to serve them well. They have survived for thousands of years

Aoudad Hunting: The Poor Man’s Sheep Like countless other big game hunters across the U.S., I dream of one day roasting tenderloins in a high-altitude camp as the flickering firelight casts its glow on a set of wild sheep horns strapped to my backpack. Be it a fully curled Rocky Mountain bighorn, Dall, Stone or Desert, I don’t care — I just want to be a sheep hunter, the kind that the legendary Jack O’Connor was as he roamed the withering heights with his .270 in hand. Unfortunately, being a sheep hunter is my dream, not my reality thanks to staggeringly high hunting costs and precious few tags available through state draws. But there is hope for a wannabe sheep hunter like myself, hope that comes in the form of a beautiful nomadic animal with sweeping horns that have found their way to American shores. Those sheep are the imported aoudad sheep, or Barbary sheep. Native to the rocky, desert mountains of North Africa, the sheep have made themselves quite at home in the similarly dry a

The Cape Buffalo is considered by some to be the most dangerous of all of the Big Five. While he seems docile enough when viewed undisturbed in the herd, when agitated or wounded this bovine can be extremely aggressive, vindictive, and cunning. Found all over southern Africa in herds of various sizes, the buffalo can weigh up to 1800 pounds. He is primarily a grazer but an occasional browser who must drink every day. They favor the thick bushveld during the day, leisurely moving and grazing as they go. At night they tend to herd up to protect the young from their archenemy, the lion. Both sexes carry horns, however, the horns of a bull can be quite spectacular in spread, with a deep curl and a solid boss covering the forehead. Cows lack the boss, but can have a very wide spread; in fact, the world record buffalo on file in the Roland Ward record book is a cow with a spread of some 62 inches. With a well-placed shot, a rifle of .375 caliber is adequate for the Cape buffalo. However, a

HUNTER HARVESTS POTENTIAL NEW RECORD ELK Duane Kramer is a lucky guy. Not only did he win the 2020 Keystone Elk Country Alliance Raffle, which meant he got a chance to hunt a Pennsylvania monster bull, but he actually harvested a potential new state record. Kramer, who lives in Bellingham, Washington, hired Elk County Outfitters to help him locate a big bull during this memorable hunt last October. And, boy, did he make a good decision. While he was out in the field, he said he had plenty of opportunities at bulls over the 420” range. “There were enough 400-class bulls running around there that it wasn’t a question of getting a 400-inch bull, but a matter of how far over 400 we could get,” Kramer told Boone & Crockett. While he was only 18 yards away from the bull he would eventually harvest, he wasn’t close enough for an ethical shot because of the harem of cows milling around him. “I thought he was going to come right for us because we were standing right in the game trail,” sai
