Эти огромные крупнокалиберные дробовики использовали в XIX и начале XX веков для охоты на гусей и диких уток, поэтому их назвали «уточницами». Одним выстрелом из такого ружья убивали до 50 (по некоторым данным до 90) водоплавающих птиц. Диаметр ствола, как правило, превышал 5 сантиметров, а при каждом выстреле вылетало около 500 гр дроби. Такие ружья часто устанавливали в лодках, которые использовали для охоты. Чтобы навести дробовик, поворачивали лодку. Отдача у такого дробовика сумасшедшая.
