Springbok Population Control in the Northern Cape: Ethical Culling, Conservation Hunting, and the Realities of Land Management in South Africa Geography and Natural Features in Springbok The Northern Cape is a vast, arid province characterized by semi-desert plains, dry riverbeds, and expansive hardpan landscapes. While sparsely vegetated, the land supports large populations of hardy wildlife, particularly springbok. The region’s climate is dry with wide temperature swings between day and night, and its open terrain lends itself to long-range visibility, making it ideal for population control operations that require efficient herd management. Hunting Demographics Springbok culling attracts a unique segment of hunters—primarily marksmen, meat hunters, and conservation-focused sportsmen from South Africa, Europe, and the U.S. These hunts are popular with those looking for high-volume shooting experiences, affordable safaris, or a practical way to stock up on ethically sourced game mPost: 29 July 19:08

Springbok Safaris in the Free State: Flat Terrain, Trophy Rams, and Cultural Hunting Heritage Geography and Natural Features The Free State province is characterized by expansive grasslands, gentle hills, and a dry interior climate—perfect for South Africa’s national animal, the springbok. Its open plains offer excellent visibility, but the lack of cover challenges hunters to rely on stealth, long-range marksmanship, and patience. Key hunting zones include areas around Bloemfontein, Philippolis, and Bethulie, where thornveld patches and rocky outcrops provide strategic vantage points for glassing and stalking. Hunting Population The Free State is one of South Africa’s most accessible and popular plains game destinations. Controversial spring bear hunt up for debate in Washington The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission will hear a report Friday on potential changes to the 2022 spring bear hunt season. However, several conservation groups said special permits to hunt black bears in the spring should not be issued at all. The groups said the hunts cruelly kill bears just as they’ve emerged from hibernation with cubs in tow. “There's a reason why we don't hunt any other species during the spring – other than turkeys – because spring is an important time for all species in which they're recovering from the winter,” said Claire Loebs Davis, board president, Washington Wildlife First, a conservation group. After hibernation, Loebs Davis said, bears are on the verge of starvation, making the bears sluggish, slow and easy to kill. “Starvation is forcing them into clearings and in areas where the only food is available – where they are easy for hunters to find and shoot,” she said. Fox and Spring In early spring, foxes in the UK exhibit specific behaviors driven by the need to care for their young and adapt to changing environmental conditions. Here’s an overview of how foxes behave during this time: --- 1. Breeding and Den Preparation - Mating Season: Foxes typically mate between December and February, so by early spring (March to April), vixens (female foxes) are either pregnant or have recently given birth. - Denning Behavior: Vixens prepare dens (also called earths) where they will give birth and raise their cubs. These dens are often located in woodland areas, hedgerows, or even under garden sheds in urban settings. Foxes may use multiple dens and rotate them to avoid detection by predators. 2. Birth and Care of Cubs - Cub Birth: In early spring, fox cubs are usually born after a gestation period of about 52 days. A typical litter consists of 4–6 cubs, though this can vary depending on food availability and the health of the vixen. - Maternal Care: The Post: 29 March 01:22

The 10 Best States for Snow Goose Hunting Every year, hunters shoot more light geese in these states than anywhere else Even if you didn’t know much about spring snow goose hunting, fields covered with white decoys and parking lots jammed with muddy trailers would reveal hotspots across the country. And for good reason: Depending on the weather and hatch, many areas typically produce year after year. Now and then, however, you hear about a spring destination that surprises you, and some might wonder where hunters actually kill the most light geese. A quick review of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service harvest statistics provides some insight — and a few surprises. Disclaimer: These surveys are estimates and do not differentiate between spring, fall, and winter harvests, and they don’t take into account weather conditions or other factors that might influence success. We’ve compiled a four-season average — 2017-18 through 2020-21 — to get a general trend of recent hunter success. These numbePost: 21 June 12:12

4 NEW WAYS TO TAG PUBLIC-LAND TURKEYS RIGHT NOW Try these four surefire guerilla tactics to bag your public-land gobbler this spring. 1. START SCOUTING EARLY February is usually a gloomy month for outdoorsmen. Waterfowl and whitetail seasons have recently closed. It’s too cold to go fishing, and cabin fever seems to be a common illness. However, this time of year offers the best chance at getting a jump-start on killing a spring gobbler. To beat the February blues, I like to grab my .410 for squirrels and rabbits, and lace on a good pair of hiking boots. Boots on the ground is one of the biggest factors in setting the table for spring gobbler success as knowing the lay of the land is critical. The foliage is off the trees this time of the year, which makes a walk through the woods fairly easy. The snakes and ticks usually haven’t made their warm weather debut quite yet, either. And since whitetail deer shed their antlers this time of year, you can keep a lookout for sheds while youPost: 13 December 17:45

How Does Benelli’s Inertia-Driven System Work? A Hunter’s Deep Dive into Legendary Reliability If you’ve ever shouldered a Benelli shotgun in the field, you’ve likely felt the difference. It’s not just the balance or the Italian craftsmanship - it’s the Inertia-Driven® system, the heart of Benelli’s semi-automatic legacy. As a lifelong hunter and firearms enthusiast, I’ve trusted this system in rain, snow, dust, and heat. Let me break down how it works, why it matters, and what makes it stand apart from gas-operated shotguns. ⚙️ The Core Principle: Recoil, Not Gas Unlike gas-operated shotguns that siphon off combustion gases to cycle the action, Benelli’s Inertia-Driven system uses pure recoil energy. When you fire a shell, the entire shotgun moves backward—except for the bolt body, which momentarily resists due to inertia. This delay compresses a spring between the bolt head and bolt body. Once the spring reaches full compression, it expands, driving the bolt rearward to eject the Post: 29 June 18:41

A beaver may seem like a harmful animal, but in fact his diligence and desire to transform landscapes for himself are so strong that they are more than successful. What kind of landscape does a beaver need? Swampy. With bushes that have delicious bark, with a deep enough reservoir in which you can stash branches for the winter until spring. How is this beneficial to nature? For example, during one year, a hectare of wetlands absorbs 7-15 times more carbon dioxide from the air than a hectare of forest: 550-1800 kg; and emits 7-15 times more oxygen: 260-700 kg. Numerous mollusks and aquatic insects settle in the spill created by beavers, which in turn attract muskrats and waterfowl. The fish, once in favorable conditions (and the beaver deepens the reservoir and creates a network of channels), begins to multiply faster. Trees felled by beavers serve as food for hares and many ungulates, which gnaw bark from trunks and branches. The sap flowing out of the eroded trees in spring is lPost: 25 March 03:49
Shed Hunting 101: Expert Tips for Finding More Antlers This Spring Everything you need to know to find a pile of shed antlers this spring, from the basics of when and where to advanced bone-collecting tips Shed hunting comes at the perfect time of year. Big-game seasons are over in most places, and turkey seasons haven’t started yet. That means most of us are looking for a reason to get outside, and what better reason than a chance to get your hands on some antlers? But even if you’re not a big-game hunter, you should give shed hunting a try. Why? Because hunting for the shed antlers of North America’s deer species (whitetails, mule deer, elk, moose, and caribou) has something for everyone. It gets you outside and exercising at a time of year when not much else is happening, and it can turn into a fun hobby—if not an obsession—that results in a tangible reward. 5 Snow Goose Stops You’ve Never Tried Chasing spring snow geese is one of the fastest growing pursuits in hunting, and with good reason. The most obvious of its attractions are the tens of millions of birds that string out from Texas to the Canadian tundra and from the coast of California to the Eastern Shore. But as the spring migration has ballooned, so has the hunting competition. Meanwhile, it takes plenty of gear and cash to get into the game: e-callers, massive decoy rigs, pallets of ammunition and gasoline for finding fresh birds for the next day’s flight. You might wonder why we go to the trouble. But if you spend one day under twisting white flocks with 10 shotgun shells in an extension magazine before you run it to the plug again and again, you’ll understand. Arkansas, Missouri and South Dakota are the hotbeds for chasing the reverse migration, but a few places are still devoid of big crowds, no matter if you’re a do-it-yourself or pay-to-play hunter. Tennessee Moves to Later Turkey Season, 2-Bird Bag Limit, No Fanning on Public Land After extensive discussion and comment, the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission approved big changes for next year's turkey hunters The Tennessee Fish & Wildlife Commission voted on a slew of big changes for the 2023 spring turkey season during a series of open meetings June 2 and 3, 2022. You can watch the full meetings here and here. So what do the changes look like? The first is actually a change to the trapping regulations, with a year-round trapping season now allowed for raccoons and opossums — critters that are considered among the worst nest predators of wild turkeys. The hunting season for those animals will remain as-is (July 1 to March 15), but the daily bag limit for both species will be doubled for hunters. As for turkeys, the Spring 2023 bag limit will be reduced from three birds to two, only one of which can be a jake. There was a lengthy discussion about stopping the harvest of jakePost: 29 June 11:29
