The Ruger American made this list for a specific reason: it represents today’s budget-priced hunting rifles, built using innovative methods to keep costs down and performance high. Though made primarily from investment cast steel and synthetic parts, the American is an accurate and useful tool for putting meat on the table. I’ve tested two examples and ended-up buying one of them. Two of the keys to the American’s performance are the three-lug bolt and v-block bedding arrangement, both of which contribute to its accuracy. Available in several different configurations and chambered in everything from .223 to 30-06, there’s an American for everyone’s needs.Post: 20 September 10:47

BOONE AND CROCKETT CLUB The BooneandCrockettClub is an organization of hunters and conservationists. It was founded in 1887 by Theodore Roosevelt. The Club's merit lies not only in the invention of the basic formula of “fairchase” for hunting ethics, but also in the foundation of the system of nature protection in the United States, which is now known as the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. Today, the club is best known for creating a data collection system that evaluates and tracks North America's major endemic species as a measure of conservation success. The SPAS-12 was designed to function primarily in semi-automatic mode, with the pump-action mode used to reliably fire low-pressure ammunition such as tear gas rounds or less-lethal bean bags. The firing mode is switched by depressing the button under the fore-grip and also sliding it forwards or backwards until it clicks into position allowing the rotating sleeve to open or close the two gas ports. The semi-automatic mode functions with a short-stroke gas piston system. When a shell is fired, the pressure makes the bolt move rearward but the bolt will stop before opening as it deploys a single top locking lug. The gas vents into the barrel and the gas port is located towards the end of the barrel. From the gas port, the gas vents downwards into the gas block where it pushes the piston rearward. Because of the presence of the magazine tube and to avoid the use of a top-mounted gas system, the gas block and the piston are annular, along with the piston spring they enclose the magazine Post: 7 July 15:41

Cingulata, part of the superorder Xenarthra, is an order of armored New World placental mammals. Dasypodids and chlamyphorids, the armadillos, are the only surviving families in the order. Two groups of cingulates much larger than extant armadillos (maximum body mass of 45 kg (100 lb) in the case of the giant armadillo) existed until recently: pampatheriids, which reached weights of up to 200 kg (440 lb) and chlamyphorid glyptodonts, which attained masses of 2,000 kg (4,400 lb)or more. The cingulate order originated in South America during the Paleocene epoch about 66 to 56 million years ago, and due to the continent's former isolation remained confined to it during most of the Cenozoic. However, the formation of a land bridge allowed members of all three families to migrate to southern North America during the Pliocene or early Pleistocene as part of the Great American Interchange. After surviving for tens of millions of years, all of the pampatheriids and giant glyptodonts apparentPost: 12 November 16:39

Released to commemorate the company’s 75th anniversary, the rifle was one of the first on the market to use three locking lugs on the bolt and a detachable box magazine.
