New rule gives Colorado authority over gray wolf management With Colorado’s gray wolf reintroduction deadline looming, the state just received some good news regarding gray wolf management. This week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) finalized a rule, 10j, that will allow the state to create its own rules for what’s considered a “nonessential experimental population,” according to Channel 9 News. This is a big step for the reintroduction effort in a measure that was approved by voters back in 2020, which requires Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) to reintroduce wolves to the state by Dec. 31, 2023. CPW announced on Twitter/X that “10j gives us gray wolf management flexibility,” which includes determining when it will be permissible to kill a problem wolf. 10j was supported by local ranchers who, per the state’s management plan, will be allowed to kill wolves if they catch one “actively trying to kill livestock,” according to Channel 9 News. How to Hunt Alaska on a Budget Have You Ever Tried This? Alaska hunting is the stuff of dreams, yet many convince themselves it’s beyond their reach. This is easy to understand, as guided Alaska hunts are some of the most expensive around. Single-species hunts for mountain goat, dall sheep and brown bear run anywhere from $9,000 to $14,000. A guided hunt for even “commonplace” barren ground caribou might finance a multi-species hunt in southern Africa. For the average working stiff, a do-it-yourself hunt is the only way to enjoy such an expedition. If daunted by such an adventure, especially its costs, I understand. Yet, after 10 Alaska forays of my own, I’m here to say that with plenty of advanced planning and a meager savings-account grab-stake, an Alaska hunt is well within grasp. While the sexiest Alaskan species require the non-resident to hire an outfitter by law, many don’t. These include barren ground caribou, Alaska-Yukon moose, Sitka blacktail deer and black bear — all animaPost: 19 August 09:47

The Truth About Western Wolf Hunting A deep dive into one of the most controversial hunting discussions in America Predator hunting is a popular pursuit during the winter and in some areas of the Rocky Mountains, that includes the opportunity to hunt the gray wolf. Gray wolf hunting and trapping seasons have been open on and off across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming for the past decade. These elusive apex predators are difficult to pursue, but they provide an exciting opportunity for hunters, as well as the opportunity help wildlife management agencies keep populations in check. Wolves trigger passionate emotions that lead to arguments both for and against hunting. And no matter how many years pass with wolf hunting seasons in place, they still make headlines with groups like the Humane Society of the United States and Defenders of Wildlife routinely pushing to have hunts shut down. Meanwhile, wildlife agencies maintain their positions that gray wolf populations are sustainable enough to Post: 14 June 17:25

Of course, anti-hunting groups immediately sued to put wolves back under the ESA. Although these groups acknowledged that some populations of gray wolves have recovered, they sought to force the Service to restore wolves everywhere—from Maine to Washington State. The gray wolf prefers to eat fleet ungulates—elk, deer—but when Europeans arrived in America with livestock its menu expanded. A wolf that cannot find its favored meal may turn to cattle and sheep. Livestock producers and big-game hunters have considered wolves an existential threat since Colonial days. In 1634, a tract called “New England’s Prospect,” by William Wood, described the animals as “the greatest inconveniency,” noting that there was “little hope of their utter destruction, the Countrey being so spacious, and they so numerous.” Post: 4 August 17:32
