The best ways to keep your pets cool this summer A lot of us are excited about the warmer temperatures, which means more time outside with our furry friends. Experts say to keep our pets safe from the heat, walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are cooler. Limit their time outside when it’s especially hot out and keep them hydrated. Never leave your dog inside the car, even if you have a quick trip inside a store. A car can heat up quickly in just a few minutes. We have shoes to protect our feet but our pets don’t have that option, so don’t walk them on the hot pavement which can badly burn their paws. Instead, walk in grassy areas. If they are overheated, cool them off underneath their armpits, chest, and ears. If they will drink water, give them lukewarm, not ice-cold water because you don’t want to shock their system and get them to a vet as soon as possible. If it’s just simply too hot for those walks, there are plenty of ways to givPost: 22 May 19:12
Hunting dogs including the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever and English Cocker Spaniel are popular working companions. But they are also very common pets. There are a number of reasons that hunting dogs are in such demand. And why some of our best sporting dogs are also our best pet dogs too. One of the main reasons is that hunting dogs tend to have a very trainable temperament. Much of this goes back to their historical role and purpose as hunting companions. A role that requires physical fitness, intelligence and most importantly, a willingness to cooperate with peoplePost: 23 September 10:19
How to keep your pet summer fit. A veterinarian who sits at Pet Mall and Murphy Veterinary Hospital in GD Block and Pooches N More in Lake Town, shares tips on pet care. 1. Walks- Keep the temperature in mind when walking your pets. Given how hot it has been getting, it is advised to walk them early in the morning or late in the evening. This will help prevent heat strokes and footpad burning. If they undergo excessive panting it is better to keep them indoors. Keep them in air-conditioned rooms as per the requirement of the day. 2. Drinking water- Ample clean drinking water should be provided to your pet to avoid dehydration. 3. Ticks and fleas- Ectoparasites, especially ticks and fleas, are a big threat in summer months. Ticks belonging to the genus Rhipicephalusare are most commonly encountered here. Ehrlichiacanis, Hepatozooncanis, Mycoplasma hemocanis, Anaplasmaplatys, Babesiavogeli and Babesiagibsoniare the most common tick-borne pathogens present in our country. Concurrent iPost: 13 May 20:17

Do cloned pets actually look and act like the original? Cloning may sound like something out of a science fiction movie, but it’s already happening here in the United States. One company has the patented technology to clone cats, dogs and horses, and will do it for you right now – for a price. Viagen charges $35,000 to clone a cat. Cloning a dog will set you back $50,000, and a horse is $85,000. That’s clearly a huge investment. What exactly do you get for your money? First, Viagen needs a skin sample from a pet that’s either still alive, or just recently died. A lot of people turn to the company right after their pet dies, said spokesperson Melain Rodriguez, and it’s possible to do successfully if the death was within a few days ago and the body has been kept refrigerated. Then starts the real science. The sample is shipped to the company’s lab in Texas, where cells from the skin are cultured. It takes a few weeks for those cells to grow and multiply until there are about 1 milliPost: 15 May 20:26

Animal welfare organisations speak out against German outdoor cat ban Cat owners in the German town of Walldorf have been ordered this week to keep their pets indoors until the end of August to protect a rare bird during its breeding season. The decree is designed to help save the crested lark, which makes its nest on the ground and is therefore easy prey for feline hunters. The bird’s population in Western Europe has declined sharply in recent decades. Although it is listed as a species of least concern in Europe by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). "Among other things, the survival of the species depends on every single chick," authorities in Walldorf said. The rule applies to all cats in the southern part of the town and will be repeated for the next three years from April to August. Owners risk a fine of €500 if their cat is found roaming outside and could be slapped with a penalty of up to €50,000 if their pet injures or kills a crested lark. Post: 9 August 10:24
Why do cats hunt? Historically, cats weren’t kept as pets and fed by loving owners. They had to provide for themselves and hunt for their own food, like their big cat cousins such as lions and tigers. A limited amount of prey meant that only the most successful hunters survived and reproduced, so your four-legged friend is descended from hunting-savvy cat ancestors. Today, cat hunting is more about fun and entertainment. The mere sight and sound of prey triggers your cat’s hunting instinct which is hardwired into their brains. Quite simply, your cat is powerless to resist the flapping wings of a bird or the scuttling feet of a small mouse.Post: 19 August 17:17

Could vaccines for animals instead of humans help prevent the next COVID or monkeypox pandemics? How do we vaccinate wildlife? "There are many ways you can go about vaccinating wildlife" Scott Nuisner, a Professor of Biological Sciences and one of the authors of a study on the topic first published in Nature, Ecology & Evolution in 2020, told Euronews Next. "We already do this actually in North America and Europe to control rabies," he explained. "For instance, in North America, we vaccinate raccoons against rabies by dropping vaccines that are in edible baits across the landscape, out of planes or helicopters. And the raccoons eat it and they become vaccinated against rabies. And, of course, that protects us and our livestock and our pets". This solution has proven quite successful but Nuisner specified that, for it to work, you must have the right resources available - funds to fly helicopters around and pay for the baits - and a species that’s "long-lived". Hank the Tank evades capture again! The 500-pound black bear dubbed “Hank the Tank” is still on the lam after breaking into two more California homes. To date, Hank has caused “extensive damage” to 33 properties and broken into about 28 homes in a Lake Tahoe neighborhood over the past few months, according to CNN. The latest break-in occurred on February 18. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department reported that the bear didn’t go into a garage after trash, but instead physically broke through a window into the home before managing to get out. And while the massive black bear hasn’t attacked any humans or pets, worried residents have been flooding police lines with over 100 individual reports since the black bear began its tirade on the Lake Tahoe neighborhood last spring. “The incidents primarily occurred during the summer and fall of 2021, when the bear was in hyperphagia, adding calories to survive the winter,” says California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) spokesperson PPost: 22 March 10:28
How to stay safe while hiking in hunting season. Wearing orange is not the only precaution hikers - and dog owners - are encouraged to take. Fall is popular with all walks of outdoorspeople, including both hikers and hunters. As New York’s hunting season picks up steam and daylight hours dwindle, hiking and biking advocates urge those exploring the woods recreationally to take extra precautions so as to maintain the safety of themselves, their pets and hunters. “Hunting is an activity that’s quite popular and has a long heritage here,” says Andy Mossey, Stewardship & Advocacy Coordinator for The Catskill Center. “As people are getting out and recreating, we should be prepared that we’re sharing the woods with hunters.” Wear orange Hunters are required to wear orange or pink when hunting with a firearm. So, too, should hikers and bikers. Maria Bedo-Calhoun, president of the 3500 Club, says a recent hike raised some alarms for her. “I was out hiking yesterday, and it didn’t seem likPost: 14 October 19:06

Animals get better care than their owners, study finds A new study conducted by animal welfare charity Brooke suggests that pet owners are more likely to take their pet for a routine check-up at the vet than go to the doctor for a check-up themselves. The study, which was conducted ahead of World Veterinary Day this Saturday, also found that almost 7 in 10 pet owners would always go to their vet in the first instance to get reliable advice on their animal’s wellbeing, ahead of consulting friends and family or checking social media. As 9 in 10 people agree that vets are a vital part of the community, Brooke is highlighting this importance by putting a spotlight on vets all around the world. Vet and TV broadcaster Dr Scott Miller said the findings show a huge reliance on vet services and highlight just how important vet professionals are to people in the UK. “This is something we see replicated around the world, especially within the communities Brooke works in where people depend oPost: 27 April 17:33
