Perhaps it’s their size, or that their meat is not as rich or as deeply colored as other species. Coho salmon strike an interesting balance. They’re not as large as Chinook but are larger than pinks. The state Department of Natural Resources released preliminary data Tuesday that showed hunters registered 92,050 deer compared with 103,623 deer last year. That's a 16% drop-off from 2022 and 10% fewer deer than the five-year average for opening weekend. Hunters also registered 51,870 bucks, down 13% from 56,638 over opening weekend in 2022. “Landlocks & Brookies” • The fam and I were out trying to find moose along the dirt roads when we stumbled upon an apparently unnamed pond on the Connecticut River, which is scarcely more than a humble brook that far up. First cast at the outflow of the small dam brought a brookie up to an elk hair caddis. Subsequent casts found brookies wildly striking away, with the occasional salmon parr in the mix. The Chartreuse Chamois is a mountain game that lives in the Chartreuse Massif, in the south-east of France. It is the biggest chamois with male adults being around 50-55 kg in weight. With shorter legs than the Alpine Chamois, its coat is also lighter, sometimes with hints of grey or reddish-brown. It also has a small bump on his nose and a fine white line upon his chest (more or less distinctive). The horns are more open and curved but shorter than the Alpine Chamois’. Remington Model Seven When I worked behind a gun counter, probably I sold more Model Sevens than all of my colleagues combined. The Model Seven is essentially a shortened 700 action that maintains virtually all of its virtues. These little rifles prove that you don’t need a magnum-length barrel to have an effective hunting rifle. Compact, relatively light and portable, these rifles are just the ticket for hunting from tree stands, in timber or in thick brush. But does that qualify them to be classified as dangerous game. I have certainly had my doubts until, that is, an experience I had one night in a farmer’s field. There is no question that an animal that weighs two tons, can run up to 20 mph and has huge teeth, has the potential of being dangerous. The danger is highest if you happen to catch a hippo on the land. Water is their preferred environment and they seem less threatened there. I don’t think any predator will attack a full-grown hippo in the water, although a big croc will certainly snatch a small hippo given half a chance. On the other hand, lion, especially a large pride, will attack a hippo if they catch it on land. This may have something to do with hippo temperament when they are away from water. What kind of landscape does a beaver need? Swampy. With bushes that have delicious bark, with a deep enough reservoir in which you can stash branches for the winter until spring. How is this beneficial to nature? For example, during one year, a hectare of wetlands absorbs 7-15 times more carbon dioxide from the air than a hectare of forest: 550-1800 kg; and emits 7-15 times more oxygen: 260-700 kg. 2100 kilometers in three days, a couple late nights and busy talking to people and giving presentations at the Parkland Outdoor Show & Expo could wear a person out but the energy at this show kept us so energized. It was really humbling talking to people there that said they'd driven all the way from Manitoba or distant locations in Saskatchewan just to meet us. The only downside to to the show was that virtually everyone that we chatted with had a picture of a bigger deer on their phone than TJ has ever taken ;) It was pretty cool spending time with several of the top TV show hosts and outdoor personalities in Canada. Where Timon and Pumbaa, the warthog and the meerkat were responsible for the humorous line, many decided that wild animals can be really cute and funny… In the video, people who have no experience interacting with wild animals are feeding a warthog. At the moment when she tries to stroke him, the warthog cuts through the woman's skin and muscles in the area where the femoral artery passes. Judging by the huge amount of blood that flowed out of the wound in a few seconds, it is more than likely that the warthog's tusk could have cut through part of this important vessel responsible for transporting blood from the heart to the leg. We have already written recently that Inuit (Eskimos) invented some items that are now used by all of humanity. As for example, a waterproof fabric, an anorak jacket and a kayak boat. But there is something even more incredible! Everyone knows that on a sunny day, the bright sun makes your eyes blind. To hunt in bright, blinding light is simply impossible. Most of us use sunglasses in the south and we perceive them exclusively as an accessory for hot countries. But that's because only few of us have been to the north. And we can't even imagine how the sunlight intensifies after reflecting off the white snow. Long before us, Eskimos, according to one version, invented the first sunglasses. Of course, they did not have darkened glass… But they carved it out of bone or wood the likeness of modern glasses with thin slits for the eyes, capable of softening and limiting excessive light. But if your idea of fun is hitting more doves, choose a 12- or 20-gauge with some heft and at least a 28-inch barrel. A longer, heavier gun swings smoothly, points surely and soaks up recoil. Stock Up On Shells Ammunition is available again, and there’s no reason to run out opening day, which I have actually done. Begging shells from people in the field is just embarrassing. Field or target loads of Nos. 7½ or 8 lead or 6 or 7 steel work. Steel loads kill fine, by the way. Lighter loads, with less shot and lower velocities, kick a lot less than heavy, high-speed stuff, and you will shoot a lot in no more padding than a T-shirt. Find a Deadhead Buck? Keep it Legal To you thousands of COVID-19 newbies that have joined our ranks to hunt deer in the fall and shed antlers in the spring, here is something you’ll find interesting. A “deadhead” is the commonly used term for a buck deer carcass that you might stumble across in the woods, with antlers still attached to the skull. Generally, such a buck has been dead for several months or even a year or two, and the carcass has been ravaged by time, weather, and predators. All that might remain are a grisly skull with antlers, a portion of the spine, and maybe some rib bones wrapped tautly with pieces of hide as black as used motor oil. If the skull has been lying on the ground for more than a few months, you might see teeth marks on the antlers where squirrels and mice have gnawed them.
