Six Washington wolves were poisoned Six wolves are dead after ingesting poison and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is offering over $51,000 in rewards for information that leads to a conviction. In February, officials discovered four dead wolves about 65 miles northwest of Spokane, Washington; two more dead wolves were discovered within a month, according to the New York Times. All were members of the Wedge pack in Stevens County. The pack had a reputation for trouble. In July 2020, an adult female was lethally removed after repeat livestock depredation on public and private land and other members were also lethally removed for the same issue. Group two of this year’s trainees started their overnight hunt on Saturday morning. After hiking to their campsite with the aid of the club gps units, it was time for a quick target validation sighting session. Next it was time to hit the hills. It was a slow start with the animals all bedded down and refusing to break cover. Eventually an animal presented a shot while being tucked away in the bush. By the end of the weekend, which went late into Sunday arvo, all of group two had an animal packed into their vehicles. Once again the trainees all learnt heaps and left for home with big smiles all round. But step a boot across the boundary line without permission, and that’s obviously trespassing. If you go over and tear down a treestand like my fuming buddy Steve suggested — and what many of you would want to do in a similar situation — you’ll pile on the misdemeanor of petty theft or destruction of property. Local experts provide safety tips for 2021-2022 hunting season. Fall has begun in West Virginia, bringing with it cooler temperatures, beautiful colorful leaves and the beginning of hunting season. Like any other state, a number of different rules and regulations are in place. However, many forms of hunting are currently available to residents. Hunting season for squirrel began on Sept. 11 and will continue through Feb. 28. “Small game has such a high reproductivity we can extend the seasons and have higher limit,” said Steve Rauch, District 1 wildlife biologist for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. However, for most hunters in West Virginia, hunting means big game, such as deer and bear. Archery and crossbow season began on Sept. 25 and continue through Dec. 31. During archery season, hunters can take either an antlered or antlerless deer or a bear.
